THE STORM BEGINS

⸻ Chapter 4 – The Storm Begins The sky darkened without warning. Aria was checking her stockpile one last time when the first flakes fell—soft at first, almost gentle. But within minutes, the snow turned into a raging white storm, whipping against windows and shaking the thin walls of the house. Her heart clenched. She had anticipated the apocalypse would arrive on schedule. But now… it seemed to have come earlier. “The storm… it’s starting early,” she whispered, her breath fogging in the cold air. She grabbed her coat, scarf, and gloves, checking the bunker blueprints one last time. Every door, every passage, every emergency hatch was memorized. Time was running out. ⸻ The First Rescue Aria stepped outside, the wind immediately slapping her face like a thousand icy needles. Visibility was near zero. Snow whipped into her eyes and mouth, stealing her breath. She clenched her jaw and forced herself forward. Her instincts guided her. She knew Ryan Blake lived near the old industrial area. The memory of him from school—the quiet boy who always stayed calm under pressure—made her focus. A few minutes into the blizzard, she spotted movement through the white haze. Ryan. He was collapsing into the snow, frozen fingers clutching at his coat. His face was pale, lips blue. Without hesitation, Aria sprinted forward, fighting the wind. “Ryan! Grab my hand!” she shouted, her voice barely audible over the storm. He looked up, eyes wide with disbelief. Relief flooded his face as he grasped her hand. “Aria… I… the storm…” he stammered. “No time,” she said, wrapping an arm around him and dragging him toward the house. Every step was a battle, snow piling high, wind threatening to knock them down. Inside, she closed the door behind them, panting and shivering. Ryan leaned against the wall, chest heaving. “You… saved me,” he whispered. “No one survives alone,” Aria said. “We move together, or we die alone.” ⸻ Finding Ethan Meanwhile, Lily had ventured a few blocks away, hoping to retrieve last-minute supplies. Her heart nearly stopped when she saw a figure stumbling through the storm—Ethan Cole, Lily’s old classmate. He was weak, his coat torn, frost forming on his hair. Lily didn’t hesitate. She braved the storm, pulling him to the relative safety of the house. Aria and Lily worked quickly, removing their wet clothes and wrapping Ryan and Ethan in blankets. The house was small, but it was warm enough to prevent immediate frostbite. As the wind howled outside, Aria studied the storm through the windows. The world was changing before her eyes. Streets that had been empty now disappeared under piles of snow. Cars were trapped, roofs caving under ice. Trees snapped like twigs in the wind. The Ice Apocalypse had begun. ⸻ Entering the Bunker Aria turned to the group. “It’s time,” she said firmly. The four of them grabbed the supplies they had prepared in advance—water, food, blankets, and emergency gear—and made their way to the underground bunker. The bunker entrance was hidden in the backyard. Aria had reinforced the steel door herself, making sure it could withstand the storm outside. She and Ryan pushed it open, shoving snow aside. Inside, the warmth hit them like a wave. Lights glowed softly, generators hummed, and rows of supplies lined the walls. Ethan’s eyes widened. “This… this is incredible.” Aria gave a small smile. “We’re going to survive. But it’s only the beginning. The storm isn’t going to stop.” ⸻ First Night Underground That first night in the bunker was tense. Outside, the storm raged like a living thing. Inside, four humans huddled together, listening to the wind hammer against the earth above. Aria organized roles immediately: • Ryan – generators and power systems • Ethan – water filtration and hydroponics • Lily – food supplies and medical equipment • Aria – leadership, planning, and overall survival strategy They worked silently, efficiently. Every sound outside reminded them of what was at stake. Ryan checked the generator twice. Ethan verified water storage. Lily counted the food rations. Aria monitored the bunker security system she had installed herself. Finally, when they were certain everything was stable, they sat together in the common area. “This is just the start,” Aria said, her voice firm. “The storm will last. The ice will grow. And the world outside… it will not wait for us.” Ryan nodded, placing a hand on hers. “We’ll survive. Together.” For the first time since the snowstorm began, they felt hope. The Ice Apocalypse had arrived, but Aria’s preparations, determination, and careful planning gave them a fighting chance. And she promised herself, silently, that this time… she would survive. No betrayal, no storm, no death would take her again.
