THE MOMENT SHE STOPPED PANICKING

851 Words
Ella Morgan had learned something about hospital life. Every day was unpredictable. One minute, you were calmly arranging supplies. The next minute, someone was calling for help and everyone suddenly moved like their lives depended on it. Which, technically, they did. “Ella, are you ready?” Sophie asked as they walked into the ward. Ella adjusted her ID badge. “As ready as someone can be when they still don’t know where half the equipment is.” Sophie laughed. “You’re getting better.” Ella looked at her. “Was that a compliment?” “Yes.” “I’ll write it down. These moments are rare.” The ward was busy that morning. Nurses moved from one patient to another. Phones rang. Machines beeped softly. Ella took a deep breath. This was the part she had always imagined. Not the exams. Not the stress. This. Helping people. Their supervisor gave them instructions. “You’ll observe today and assist where needed. Stay alert.” Ella nodded. “I can do that.” Sophie looked at her. “Don’t say that too confidently. The universe likes proving people wrong.” Ella rolled her eyes. “You’re very supportive.” “I try.” For the first hour, everything went smoothly. Almost suspiciously smoothly. Ella helped with simple tasks, spoke with patients, and followed instructions carefully. She was beginning to relax. Maybe she really could do this. Then suddenly— A nurse called out. “Can someone help here?” The whole atmosphere changed. Ella turned. An elderly patient looked uncomfortable, and the nurses immediately moved closer. Ella froze for a second. Her first instinct was panic. But then she remembered. Breathe. Observe. Help. She moved forward. “What do you need me to do?” The nurse looked at her. “Get the equipment from the trolley, please.” Ella nodded. “Right away.” And this time… she didn’t run. She didn’t drop anything. She didn’t embarrass herself. She moved. From across the ward, Daniel Scott watched quietly. He had seen Ella’s first day. The nervous student who looked like she was one small problem away from running back to the airport. But this? This was different. After everything settled, Ella stepped outside the ward for a moment. She let out a breath. “I didn’t panic.” A small smile appeared on her face. “I actually didn’t panic.” “Congratulations.” She turned. Daniel. Of course. Ella smiled slightly. “Were you listening to me talk to myself?” “No.” A pause. “I was passing by.” She narrowed her eyes. “That sounds suspicious.” Daniel raised an eyebrow. “Do you always question everyone?” “Only when they appear suddenly.” A small silence. Then Daniel said: “You handled that well.” Ella blinked. “Really?” “Yes.” The answer came so easily that it surprised her. Usually Daniel was careful with praise. “I thought I would freeze,” she admitted. “But you didn’t.” She looked down. “I guess I’m improving.” Daniel nodded. “You are.” Ella smiled. Then, without thinking, she said: “Thanks, Daniel.” The second the words left her mouth, she froze. She had called him Daniel. Not Mr. Scott. Not sir. Just Daniel. The silence that followed felt louder than the hospital. Ella immediately looked away. “Sorry, I mean—Mr. Scott.” Daniel looked at her. For a moment, he said nothing. Then… “It’s fine.” That was all. Two words. But for some reason, Ella felt like she had just won something. Later that day, Sophie walked beside Ella. “So…” Ella looked at her. “So what?” Sophie smiled. “Nothing.” “That’s your suspicious face.” “My what?” “Your ‘I know something and I’m waiting for you to admit it’ face.” Sophie laughed. “You are very observant.” “I’m a nursing student.” “Sure.” Ella sighed. “Nothing is happening.” “I didn’t say anything was.” “But you’re thinking it.” Sophie looked at her. “I think you like him.” Ella stopped walking. “What?” “Daniel.” Ella laughed. A little too quickly. “Daniel Scott? My instructor?” “Yes.” “No.” Sophie waited. Ella continued: “Absolutely not.” Another pause. “…Maybe a tiny bit.” Sophie smiled. “I knew it.” Ella shook her head. “It’s not like that.” “Yet.” Ella pointed at her. “Don’t start.” That night, Ella lay in bed. She thought about the day. The patient. The confidence. Daniel’s words. You are improving. She smiled slightly. Maybe London wasn’t just a place where she was struggling. Maybe it was becoming home. And somewhere else… Daniel Scott sat in his office, looking over student notes. He stopped when he reached Ella’s name. He smiled faintly. Then quickly shook his head. “Focus, Daniel.” But the smile stayed.
