The Poisonous Rain

*Clément Estate, Bordeaux* The night had deepened, casting a veil of darkness over the Clément estate. The only sounds were the distant chirping of crickets and the soft rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. Elena stood in the shadows of the main building, her heart pounding in her chest. The flashlight in her hand cast a narrow beam of light, illuminating the cold, damp floor. Elena's mind was racing. She had always trusted Madame Lebrun, the estate's head chef. The revelation that Lebrun might know about the hidden compartment in the chapel was a shock. Elena had grown up watching Lebrun prepare meals with love and care, her warm presence a constant in the estate. The thought that she might be involved in the betrayal sent a chill down Elena's spine. Lucas stood beside her, his expression a mix of determination and concern. "Are you ready for this?" he asked, his voice low. Elena took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. "As ready as I'll ever be," she replied, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. They made their way to the kitchen, the heart of the estate. The kitchen was a large, bustling space filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces. The staff moved efficiently, preparing meals for the next day. Madame Lebrun was at the center of it all, her authoritative voice guiding the others. Elena and Lucas approached her as she was checking a pot of simmering stew. "Madame Lebrun," Elena began, her voice calm but firm, "we need to talk to you." Lebrun looked up, her eyes widening in surprise. "Mademoiselle Elena, Monsieur Lucas. What brings you here at this hour?" Elena took a deep breath, her voice steady. "It's about the chapel. We know about the hidden compartment, and we believe you might know something about it." Lebrun's face paled, and she quickly composed herself. "I... I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, her eyes darting around the room. Lucas stepped forward, his expression stern. "Don't lie to us, Madame Lebrun. We know you were close to Elena's mother. She trusted you with her secrets. Who else did she tell?" Lebrun hesitated, her eyes filled with fear and confusion. "I... I don't know what you're talking about," she repeated, but her voice was weaker this time. Elena took a step closer, her voice softening. "Madame Lebrun, please. We need your help. My mother's death was no accident. She was murdered, and I believe the hidden clause is the key to uncovering the truth." Lebrun's eyes filled with tears, and she looked down, unable to meet Elena's gaze. "I... I can't," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Lucas's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer. "You have to tell us, Madame Lebrun. Who else knows about the hidden compartment?" Lebrun looked up, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and determination. "Alright," she said, her voice trembling. "There is one person who might know something. The estate's wine cellar master, Monsieur Bouchard." Elena's heart skipped a beat. "Bouchard? Why would he know about the chapel?" Lebrun looked down, her voice barely above a whisper. "Bouchard has been with the estate for many years. He was close to your mother, Mademoiselle Elena. She trusted him with many secrets." Lucas's eyes narrowed. "Where can we find him?" Lebrun looked up, her eyes filled with a mixture of fear and resignation. "He's in the wine cellar, preparing for tomorrow's shipments." Elena and Lucas made their way to the wine cellar, their footsteps echoing in the quiet corridors. The wine cellar was a vast, cool space filled with rows of oak barrels and the faint scent of aging wine. Monsieur Bouchard was there, checking the levels in one of the barrels. He looked up as they entered, his eyes widening in surprise. "Mademoiselle Elena, Monsieur Lucas. What brings you here?" he asked, his voice tinged with curiosity. "We need to talk to you, Bouchard," Lucas said, his expression stern. "It's about the chapel." Bouchard's face paled, and he quickly stood up, his hands trembling slightly. "The chapel? I don't understand." Elena took a deep breath, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "We know about the hidden compartment, Bouchard. Who else knows about it?" Bouchard's eyes widened in fear, and he took a step back. "I... I don't know what you're talking about." Lucas shook his head. "Don't lie to us, Bouchard. We know you were close to Elena's mother. She trusted you with her secrets. Who else did she tell?" Bouchard hesitated, his eyes darting around as if searching for an escape. Finally, he sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat. "Alright. There is one person who might know something. The estate's financial advisor, Monsieur Leclair." Elena's heart skipped a beat. "Leclair? Why would he know about the chapel?" Bouchard looked down, his voice barely above a whisper. "Leclair has been with the estate for many years. He was close to your mother, Mademoiselle Elena. She trusted him with many secrets." Lucas's eyes narrowed. "Where can we find him?" Bouchard looked up, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and resignation. "He's in his office, in the main building." They returned to the main building and made their way to Leclair's office. The office was a small, cluttered room filled with stacks of papers and old ledgers. Leclair looked up as Elena and Lucas entered, his eyes widening in surprise. "Mademoiselle Elena, Monsieur Lucas. What brings you here?" he asked, his voice tinged with curiosity. "We need to talk to you, Leclair," Lucas said, his expression stern. "It's about the chapel." Leclair's face paled, and he quickly stood up, his hands trembling slightly. "The chapel? I don't understand." Elena took a deep breath, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "We know about the hidden compartment, Leclair. Who else knows about it?" Leclair's eyes widened in fear, and he took a step back. "I... I don't know what you're talking about." Lucas shook his head. "Don't lie to us, Leclair. We know you were close to Elena's mother. She trusted you with her secrets. Who else did she tell?" Leclair hesitated, his eyes darting around as if searching for an escape. Finally, he sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat. "Alright. There is one person who might know something. The estate's security chief, Monsieur Dubois." Elena's heart skipped a beat. "Dubois? Why would he know about the chapel?" Leclair looked down, his voice barely above a whisper. "Dubois has been with the estate for many years. He was close to your mother, Mademoiselle Elena. She trusted him with many secrets." Lucas's eyes narrowed. "Where can we find him?" Leclair looked up, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and resignation. "He's in the security office, in the basement." They descended to the basement and found the security office, a small, windowless room filled with monitors and equipment. Monsieur Dubois looked up as Elena and Lucas entered, his eyes widening in surprise. "Mademoiselle Elena, Monsieur Lucas. What brings you here?" he asked, his voice tinged with curiosity. "We need to talk to you, Dubois," Lucas said, his expression stern. "It's about the chapel." Dubois's face paled, and he quickly stood up, his hands trembling slightly. "The chapel? I don't understand." Elena took a deep breath, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "We know about the hidden compartment, Dubois. Who else knows about it?" Dubois's eyes widened in fear, and he took a step back. "I... I don't know what you're talking about." Lucas shook his head. "Don't lie to us, Dubois. We know you were close to Elena's mother. She trusted you with her secrets. Who else did she tell?" Dubois hesitated, his eyes darting around as if searching for an escape. Finally, he sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat. "Alright. There is one person who might know something. The estate's head chef, Madame Lebrun." Elena's heart skipped a beat. "Lebrun? Why would she know about the chapel?" Dubois looked down, his voice barely above a whisper. "Lebrun has been with the estate for many years. She was close to your mother, Mademoiselle Elena. She trusted her with many secrets." Lucas's eyes narrowed. "Where can we find her?"
