The morning in Bordeaux was serene, with sunlight filtering through the mist to cast a golden glow over the Clément estate's vineyards. Elena stood in front of the main building of the estate, her heart heavy with complex emotions. She knew that today would be a significant turning point in her life. Lucas's proposal had been like a bombshell, exploding in Elena's mind. After days of careful consideration, she had finally decided to accept the marriage of convenience. She knew it was a dangerous decision, but it was her only chance to uncover the truth behind her mother's death and reclaim the family inheritance that was rightfully hers. The wedding took place in the garden of the Clément estate, surrounded by flowers whose fragrance filled the air. Elena wore a white wedding dress, embroidered with delicate grapevine patterns that symbolized her connection to the Clément family. Her hair was carefully coiffed, with a few loose strands framing her face, adding a touch of softness. Lucas stood opposite her, dressed in a black suit that accentuated his elegance. His eyes, as he looked at Elena, held a depth that seemed to scrutinize her every move. The priest stood between them, holding a Bible, and began the ceremony. "Elena Clément, do you take Lucas Hawk to be your husband, to have and to hold, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?" The priest's voice was solemn and sacred. Elena took a deep breath and looked at Lucas with determination in her eyes. "I do." Lucas smiled faintly, a hint of complex emotions flashing in his eyes. "And do you, Lucas Hawk, take Elena Clément to be your wife, to have and to hold, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?" "I do," Lucas's voice was deep and resolute. The priest nodded and gestured for them to exchange rings. Elena took the ring from the priest and gently placed it on Lucas's finger. As her fingers touched his skin, she felt a slight tremor. She knew that at this moment, she had taken a step from which there was no turning back. When it was Lucas's turn to place the ring on Elena's finger, he took out an exquisite ring box from his pocket and slowly opened it. Inside the box lay a ring set with a large ruby, which gleamed with an eerie light in the sunlight, as if it held secrets untold. "This ring belonged to my mother," Elena's voice trembled slightly as she recognized it. She had seen her mother wear it countless times, and now it was in Lucas's possession. Lucas smiled, a hint of cunning in his eyes. "I acquired it at an auction. It once belonged to the Clément family, and now, it will return to the family." Elena's heart was filled with questions. She knew the appearance of this ring was no coincidence. She took a deep breath and tried to keep her voice steady. "I see. Thank you, Mr. Hawk." Lucas gently placed the ring on Elena's finger, its warmth spreading through her entire body. She felt an inexplicable sense of unease, as if the ring was more than just a piece of jewelry—it was a key to hidden secrets. The wedding ceremony ended, and the guests offered their congratulations one by one. Elena and Lucas stood in the garden, receiving well-wishes from the crowd. However, Elena's mind was far from at peace. She knew the appearance of that ring signaled the beginning of a new mystery. As night fell and the guests gradually left, the Clément estate returned to its usual tranquility. Elena stood in front of the main building, her eyes drawn to the old cellar, a sense of inexplicable tension rising in her heart. She knew that within its depths lay many secrets unknown to others, and her mission was to uncover them. Taking a deep breath, she walked towards the cellar. The cellar door was tightly shut, secured with a large iron lock. Elena took out a key from her pocket—it was one she had found in Lucas's study. She inserted the key into the lock and gently turned it, the lock clicking open. The cellar door creaked open, and a musty smell wafted out. Elena turned on her flashlight, its beam cutting through the darkness. She stepped cautiously into the cellar, each footfall heavy with anticipation. The interior of the cellar was damp and dark, the air thick with the scent of decay. Elena shone her flashlight around, noticing the walls lined with ancient wine barrels, each marked with dates and inscriptions. She made her way along the wall, her heart pounding with a mix of tension and excitement. Suddenly, her attention was drawn to a corner. There stood a large oak barrel, unlike the others in that it bore no markings. Elena's heart skipped a beat; she knew this barrel held secrets. She approached it and shone her flashlight inside. The surface of the barrel was worn and covered in a layer of dust. Elena reached out and gently wiped away the grime, revealing a small crack. Her heart racing, she took a small knife from her bag and carefully pried open the crack. With a soft "click," the lid of the oak barrel opened. Elena took a deep breath and shone her flashlight inside. Her eyes widened in shock—instead of wine, the barrel was filled with a pile of glittering diamonds. Elena's mind reeled. She knew these diamonds were connected to her family's secrets. However, as she moved to examine them further, her gaze was drawn to something at the bottom of the barrel. Something was glinting in the darkness. She carefully shifted the diamonds aside, revealing a skeleton. The skeleton was dressed in a tattered dress, embroidered with familiar grapevine patterns. A chill ran through Elena's heart; she recognized the remains—this was her mother's true body. "Mother..." Elena's voice trembled, tears welling up in her eyes. At that moment, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from outside the cellar. Elena's heart tightened; she knew someone was coming. She quickly closed the barrel lid, hid in the corner, and turned off her flashlight. The footsteps grew louder, and Elena held her breath, her heart pounding. The door swung open, and a beam of flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating the entrance. A figure stepped inside—it was Lucas. "Elena, are you in here?" Lucas's voice was clear in the darkness. Elena didn't respond. She knew Lucas had sensed something. She clutched the small knife in her hand, ready for whatever might happen. Lucas moved further into the cellar, his flashlight scanning the surroundings, seemingly looking for something. His gaze finally fell on the oak barrel, and a look of surprise crossed his face. "What's this?" Lucas approached the barrel, shining his flashlight on it. Elena's heart tightened. She knew Lucas had discovered her secret. She took a deep breath and stepped out from the corner, her voice steady. "It's a family secret, Lucas." Lucas turned to her, his eyes scrutinizing. "Elena, what have you found?" Elena didn't answer. She walked up to the barrel and slowly lifted the lid. As the light shone inside, Lucas saw the diamonds and the skeleton. His expression turned complex, as if he was piecing together a puzzle. "This is your mother's remains," Lucas said, his voice deep and measured. "You've known about this all along, haven't you?" Elena nodded, her voice tinged with sorrow. "Yes, I have. I've been searching for her true body, and today, I finally found her." Lucas was silent for a moment, then he smiled faintly. "Elena, you're very brave. But you know, some secrets are better left buried." Elena's heart tightened. She knew there was more to Lucas's words. She looked up at him, her eyes resolute. "I'm not afraid of any secrets, as long as I can bring justice to my mother." A complex emotion flickered in Lucas's eyes. He seemed to be struggling with something. Finally, he took a deep breath and said, "Alright, I'll help you. But you have to promise me one thing." Elena's heart skipped a beat. She knew this might be her only chance. She nodded. "What is it?" Lucas took a deep breath, his voice steady and resolute. "You have to trust me, no matter what happens."
