The Alpha Watches

308 Words
Kael had left the ceremony, but he could not leave the image of Lyra behind. The memory of her kneeling, humiliated, burned into him. He told himself he had done the right thing. She was weak, wolfless, and unready. Yet his wolf—a creature of instinct and blood—refused to let it go. The rejection that had seemed justified now gnawed at him. He found himself returning to the forest edge, watching shadows move where she had fallen. Lyra. She was alive. Barely. But alive. And that, Kael realized, was unacceptable. Inside the forest, Lyra’s senses sharpened. Every sound, every whisper of wind made her nerves hum. The spark inside her pulsed stronger, responding to the presence of the Alpha. Something forbidden, something dangerous. She remembered the first flare of pain in her chest after the rejection. That spark—the hybrid bloodline hidden within her—was awakening. Heat rose unbidden, visions of red moons, blood-stained hands, and golden eyes haunting her dreams. Kael crouched behind a thick oak. His chest ached as he watched her from the shadows. He should have left. The rules forbade interference. But every instinct screamed otherwise. “She’s mine,” he murmured. Meanwhile, Lyra’s trembling hands traced the forest floor. A sudden ache in her shoulder made her stagger. When she glanced down, she saw it: a glowing symbol forming on her skin. A mate mark. Impossible. Rejected mates didn’t bear marks. Outside, Kael felt the same searing burn on his own arm. His breath caught. “She’s alive… and she’s mine.” The forest seemed to hold its breath as the night pulsed with something ancient and powerful. Two hearts, two souls, bound by fate and forbidden blood, were awakening—and the storm had only just begun. Something approaches in the shadows—neither human nor wolf.
