Chapter 10

Shae moved with practiced efficiency, her nimble fingers working the lock on the cage. With a soft click, the door swung open, freeing Amelia from her makeshift prison. "We need to get off this island," Col said, his voice urgent. "They'll be back with reinforcements. I have a boat waiting on the east side." Shae's eyes narrowed, her gaze assessing him. She had no choice but to go along with his plan for now. Her own ship had been lost during the journey, and rowing away from the island was not a viable option. She had another plan, though. "Come here," she said, her voice low, gesturing for Col to step into the cage. Amelia stood guard outside, her eyes scanning the surroundings. Col hesitated, his instincts warning him of a trap, but he stepped into the cage. Shae moved closer, her body brushing against his, sending a shiver down his spine. "If we're going to make it off this island alive," she said, her voice a soft whisper, "we're going to have to trust each other." She moved closer, her eyes locking with his. "We both want what's best for Amelia. We need to start thinking about her well-being." Col, for reasons he couldn't quite explain, found himself lowering his guard. Shae's proximity, her soft voice, her persuasive words, were having an effect on him. Shae backed him against the wall of the cage, her face inches from his. "We need to work together," she said, her breath mingling with his. She slowly leaned in, her lips brushing against his. Col was falling under her spell, the sweetness of her lips a tantalizing distraction. He was about to close the gap between them when he heard a faint clink. He glanced down and saw a pair of shackles clamped around his wrist, securing him to the wall. He looked back at Shae, his eyes filled with betrayal. She met his gaze, her expression a mixture of regret and determination. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "But I can't go back to the Brotherhood empty-handed." She turned and walked away, grabbing Amelia by the arm. "Let's go," she said, her voice hard. Col watched them go, his eyes burning with anger. He yanked on the shackles, testing their strength. They were sturdy, forged from iron, designed to hold even the strongest of prisoners. He focused his energy, channeling his magic, and unleashed a basic spell, a burst of concussive force. The chain snapped, the metal links flying apart. He burst from the cage, his eyes scanning the forest. Shae and Amelia were gone, their footprints leading towards the east side of the island. He followed the trail, his movements swift and silent. Shae and Amelia reached the spot where Col had left his horse. Shae, seeing an opportunity, tried to mount the animal, but the horse refused to budge. "Come on, you stupid animal," she said, tugging on the reins. "Move!" The horse snorted, shaking its head, its eyes fixed on Shae with a defiant glare. She finally managed to get on his back, but the horse wouldn’t move. “Ride you big dumb animal!” Shae yelled . The horse began to buck, trying to throw her off. Shae clung to its mane, her legs gripping its sides, but the horse was relentless. It bucked and reared, its movements violent and unpredictable. Finally, with a powerful lurch, the horse sent Shae flying, she landed flat on her back, the wind knocked out of her. She looked up, her eyes wide with surprise, and saw Col standing over her, a cocky grin on his face. "He only lets me ride him," Col said, his voice laced with amusement. Shae groaned, her body aching, her pride wounded. She glared at Col, her eyes flashing with anger. "You..." she began, but words failed her. To Shae's surprise, Col extended a hand, offering to help her up. She regarded him with suspicion, her eyes searching his for any sign of deception. After a moment's hesitation, she cautiously placed her hand in his. He gently pulled her to her feet, his touch surprisingly gentle. They made their way back to the ship, the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the shore a constant reminder of the impending storm. They boarded the vessel, Col leading his horse onto the deck. The captain, his face etched with concern, informed them that a powerful storm was approaching. They would have to seek shelter at the nearest island until it passed. Col, his jaw tight, nodded in agreement. They sailed to a nearby island, arriving just as the first tendrils of the storm began to lash the sea. They found a decent tavern, its warm glow a welcome sight amidst the raging elements. They managed to secure two rooms, connected by a shared door, allowing Col to keep a watchful eye on Shae and Amelia. Col settled Amelia into his room, giving her the bed while he took the couch. Shae was assigned the small room attached to his. After Amelia drifted off to sleep, Col decided to check on Shae, his instincts telling him she was up to something. He quietly opened the door to her room and stepped inside. He found her in the small bathing area, a steaming wooden tub filled with hot water. "Sorry," he said, his voice low, "just checking to make sure you were… alright." Shae sat naked in the tub, the water just barely covering her perfect breasts. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun, a few strands cascading down her neck. Col couldn't help but admire her beauty, despite her repeated attempts to kill him. Then he noticed her ears, slightly pointed, she was half elf. She gave him a knowing smirk. "I'm fine," she said, her voice laced with amusement. "It's been a while since I've had a hot bath." Col walked over to a small table and sat down, facing her. "Tell me," he said, his voice serious, "what did you mean when you said you couldn't go back to the Brotherhood empty-handed?" Shae's smirk faded, her expression turning serious. She hesitated, debating how much to reveal. There was something about Col, a sense of honesty, that compelled her to speak. "I was tasked with retrieving the princess," she said, her voice low. "The Elf King heard of her running away. My boss thinks he'll get mountains of coin from either her father or the elf king for her. When you are given a job by the Brotherhood, you have to follow through or…" She looked away, her voice trailing off. Col's jaw tightened. "You're so young," he said, his voice filled with concern. "How did you get wrapped up in the Dark Brotherhood?" Shae shifted in the tub, the water rippling around her. She sighed, deciding to reveal a part of her past. "I was an orphan," she said, gesturing to her pointed ears. "Being half-elf, I was… unwanted." "I found the Brotherhood when I was six," she continued. "They took me in, taught me everything I know. When they saw how quickly I adapted to magic and the art of being an assassin, they brought me into the deeper part of the Brotherhood, the… darker part." She looked into Col's eyes, her expression intense. "That's why I cannot fail." Col leaned forward, his eyes filled with sincerity. "Amelia must go back to her father," he said, his voice gentle. "It's safer for her. The Brotherhood, the Elf King, they'll never stop hunting her. At least with her father, she'll have some protection." Shae looked away, her expression conflicted. She knew Col was right. But she also knew that the Brotherhood wouldn't let her walk away, not alive. "I understand," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "But…" "But what?" Col asked, his eyes searching hers. "But they won't let me leave," Shae said, her voice filled with a quiet resignation. "They won't let me fail." Col reached out, placing his hand on her arm. Sending a shiver down her spine despite hot water. "Then we'll find a way," he said, his voice filled with determination. "We'll protect her, together." Shae looked at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of hope and doubt. She wanted to believe him, to trust him. But the shadows of her past, the weight of her obligations, held her captive.
