Chapter 30

Shae's grip on the dagger tightened, her knuckles white. She struggled against the conflicting emotions tearing her apart. Tears welled in her eyes, blurring her vision. "I… I have to," she whispered, her voice trembling. "If I don't kill you, they'll kill me. I have no choice." Col's hands, warm and gentle, settled on her thighs, his touch sending a shiver through her. "Then don't," he said, his voice low and firm. "There's always a choice." Shae tried to force the dagger closer to his throat, but her hand refused to obey. She couldn't do it. She couldn't kill him. With a shaky breath, she pulled the dagger away, the sharp edge no longer a threat. Col opened his eyes, his gaze meeting hers. He saw the tears glistening on her cheeks, the raw vulnerability in her eyes. "There's always a choice," he repeated, his voice soft and calm. Shae shook her head, her breath hitching. She tossed the dagger onto the side table, the metallic clatter echoing in the small cabin. "He'll kill me," she said, her voice filled with despair. "Vael will kill me for disobeying." Col slowly sat up, his eyes searching hers. He gently cupped her face in his hands, his touch tender and reassuring. He leaned forward, their lips barely brushing. "I won't let him," he whispered, his voice filled with a fierce protectiveness. "I won't let anyone hurt you. Not ever again." Shae shuddered at his words, the last vestiges of her resolve crumbling. She closed the remaining distance between them, her lips meeting his in a passionate kiss. It was a kiss born of desperation, of fear, of a desperate yearning for something more than the life she had always known. Col's hands moved beneath Shae's tunic, tracing the delicate curves of her body. He explored the warmth and softness of her skin, his touch gentle yet possessive. Shae threaded her fingers through his hair, pulling him closer, her body molding against his. Their breaths mingled, heavy and ragged, filling the small cabin with a raw, sensual energy. Col's lips trailed down her neck, tasting the sweetness of her skin, eliciting a soft gasp from Shae. She arched her back, tilting her head giving him better access, her hands tightening in his hair. He kissed along her collarbone, his touch sending shivers down her spine. He was about to lift her tunic over her head, eager to explore the rest of her body, when the ship suddenly lurched violently. A massive impact shook the vessel, throwing them off balance. A deafening roar filled the air, a sound that resonated deep within their bones. Before they could react, another powerful impact slammed into the ship, sending them crashing to the floor. The small cabin rocked violently, the sounds of splintering wood and panicked shouts echoing through the ship. The cabin was thrown into chaos. Loose items crashed to the floor, the lantern swung wildly, casting flickering shadows across the room. Col and Shae, disoriented, scrambled to their feet, their eyes wide with alarm. "What was that?" Shae asked, her voice tight with fear. Col, his senses on high alert, listened intently. "I don't know," he said, his voice grim. "But it doesn't sound good." Another deafening roar echoed through the ship, followed by the sound of splintering wood and panicked screams. The ship lurched again, tilting precariously to one side. "We need to get to the deck," Col said, his voice urgent. "Now." They rushed out of the cabin, their feet pounding against the wooden floor. The hallway was filled with panicked sailors, their faces pale and their eyes wide with terror. They pushed their way through the chaos, heading towards the stairs that led to the upper deck. As they reached the deck, they were met with a scene of utter pandemonium. The ship was listing heavily, its deck awash with seawater. The crew scrambled to secure loose cargo and repair damaged rigging, their shouts lost in the roar of the wind and the crashing waves. The source of the disturbance was immediately apparent. A massive creature, its form barely visible in the darkness, was attacking the ship. Its tentacles, thick as tree trunks, wrapped around the hull, crushing the wood like twigs. Its massive head, a grotesque mass of tentacles and glowing eyes, rose from the churning water, its roar a terrifying symphony of rage. "What is that thing?" Amelia shouted, her voice trembling. She had made her way up to the deck alongside Col and Shae. "A Kraken," a nearby sailor shouted, his voice filled with terror. "A monster from the depths!" The Kraken slammed another tentacle against the ship, sending a shudder through the vessel. The crew screamed, some leaping overboard in a desperate attempt to escape. "We need to get off this ship," he said, his voice grim. "Now." The deck was a scene of pandemonium. Sailors scrambled, their shouts lost in the monstrous roar of the Kraken and the crashing waves. Col, Shae, and Amelia fought their way through the chaos, desperately trying to reach a lifeboat or any piece of debris that could keep them afloat. "We need to get off this ship!" Col yelled, his voice barely audible above the din. He scanned the deck, his eyes searching for an escape route. But the ship was listing heavily, and the Kraken's relentless assault was tearing it apart. The monstrous creature's tentacles whipped through the air, smashing against the deck, splintering wood and sending debris flying. The ship groaned, its timbers creaking under the immense pressure. "It's too late!" a sailor screamed, his voice filled with despair. "She's going down!" The Kraken reared its massive head, its glowing eyes fixed on the ship with a malevolent intensity. With a final, devastating blow, it slammed its tentacles against the ship's hull, splitting it in half. The ship groaned, its timbers screaming in protest, then broke apart, plunging into the churning sea. Col, Shae, and Amelia, along with the remaining crew, were thrown into the icy water. Chaos reigned. The sea was a maelstrom of crashing waves, splintered wood, and thrashing tentacles. The air was filled with screams and the monstrous roars of the Kraken. The water was dark and cold, the salt stinging their eyes and the waves threatening to pull them under. Col fought to stay afloat, his eyes scanning the churning water for Shae and Amelia. Splintered pieces of the ship swirled around him, threatening to crush him. The Kraken's tentacles lashed out, their massive forms disappearing into the dark depths of the water and then reappearing, creating massive waves. Amelia, small and frail, was struggling to stay afloat, her screams lost in the roar of the sea. Col swam towards her, his movements hampered by the swirling debris and the powerful currents. He managed to grab her arm, pulling her close. Shae, her movements fluid and powerful, fought her way through the chaos, her eyes fixed on Col and Amelia. She was a force of nature, her determination fueled by a primal instinct to protect them. The Kraken, sensing their attempts to escape, turned its attention to them. Its glowing eyes fixed on them, and it let out a deafening roar, a sound that seemed to shake the very foundations of the sea.
