Chapter 14: The Road to Nowhere The road stretched into darkness, the car’s headlights slicing through the pitch-black night. Trees lined both sides of the narrow path, their twisted branches clawing at the sky like skeletal fingers. Emma held Sophie tightly, her heart pounding against her ribs. The cold air inside the car made her skin prickle, but her palms were slick with sweat. “Liam, stop the car,” Emma’s voice trembled, but she forced herself to sound firm. Liam didn’t answer. His jaw was clenched, eyes locked on the road ahead. “Liam, where are you taking us?” Emma’s voice rose, panic edging in. He exhaled slowly, knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. “I’m protecting you.” Emma’s chest tightened like a vice. “Protecting me? From who?” Liam glanced at the rearview mirror, his gaze flicking toward Sophie, then back to the road. “From Daniel,” he said, voice low. “And from yourself.” Emma felt her blood turn to ice. “What are you talking about?” Liam pressed harder on the gas, the car picking up speed as the road twisted deeper into the forest. The shadows outside flickered like specters, blurring past the windows. “He’s manipulating you,” Liam continued, his voice sharp. “He did it to Sophie. He’s doing it to you.” Emma shook her head, her pulse thundering. “That doesn’t explain why you’re driving us into the middle of nowhere!” Liam finally turned to her, his face etched with frustration and something else — something darker. “Because he’ll come for you, Emma,” he said, voice tight. “He always does.” Sophie whimpered, curling into herself like a wounded animal. “He never stops,” she whispered. “He never stops.” Emma’s stomach twisted. “Who? Daniel?” Sophie lifted her head, her eyes wide and unfocused. “No,” she rasped. “The other one.” Emma’s pulse raced. “What other one?” But before Sophie could answer, Liam slammed on the brakes. The car skidded to a stop, tires screeching against the pavement. Emma lurched forward, her seatbelt digging painfully into her chest. The road ahead was blocked. A figure stood in the middle of the lane, illuminated by the headlights. It was Daniel. His face was pale, clothes torn, blood smeared across his forehead. Emma’s breath caught in her throat. “Oh my God.” She fumbled to unbuckle her seatbelt, but Liam grabbed her arm. “Don’t,” he snapped. Emma yanked her arm free, panic flooding her system. “He’s hurt!” “He’s dangerous,” Liam shot back. But Emma didn’t listen. She threw the door open and stumbled onto the road. “Daniel!” she cried, rushing toward him. Daniel swayed on his feet, his chest rising and falling in ragged breaths. “Emma,” he rasped. “Run.” Her heart dropped. “What?” Daniel’s eyes flicked behind her, and Emma turned just as Liam stepped out of the car. He held a gun. The forest around them went deathly silent. Emma’s chest tightened so hard it hurt to breathe. “Liam,” she whispered, voice shaking. Liam’s face twisted with an unreadable expression — a mix of anguish and determination. “He won’t stop,” Liam said, raising the gun. “Not unless I end this.” Daniel staggered, blood dripping from his temple. “Emma,” he gasped, voice broken. “It was never me.” The pieces started clicking into place, sharp and jagged, cutting through Emma’s mind like shards of glass. The letters. The stalking. The twisted obsession. It wasn’t Daniel. It was Liam. Emma’s blood turned cold. “Oh my God,” she whispered, stepping back. Liam’s eyes filled with something almost like regret. “I didn’t want you to find out this way,” he said softly. Emma’s stomach churned. “You were watching me,” she said, her voice barely a breath. Liam nodded. “You wrote the letters.” His grip on the gun tightened. “I had to,” he admitted, voice breaking. “I had to make you see that he was the monster. So you’d stay close to me. So I could protect you.” Emma shook her head, her entire body trembling. “Protect me?” she choked. “You terrorized me!” Liam’s face contorted with pain. “I love you, Emma,” he whispered. Daniel lurched forward, but Liam c****d the gun, aiming it at his chest. “Don’t,” Liam warned. Emma’s vision blurred with tears. “You hurt Sophie,” she said, voice cracking. Liam flinched. “I didn’t mean to,” he said, voice shaking. “But she tried to take you away from me. Just like Daniel.” Emma felt like she was drowning, her lungs filling with icy water. He was the danger. He was the reason Sophie disappeared. He was the reason Daniel had been so desperate to warn her. And now he was going to kill them. Emma’s mind raced, searching for a way out. She glanced back at the car, at Sophie curled up in the backseat, her eyes wide with terror. Then she looked at Daniel, barely able to stand, blood pooling beneath him. Her heart pounded so loudly it echoed in her skull. She had one chance. One shot to stop this. Emma lifted her hands slowly, her voice soft as she took a step toward Liam. “Okay,” she whispered. “Okay, Liam. You win.” Liam’s expression faltered. “What?” Emma swallowed hard, forcing her voice to steady. “I understand now,” she said, inching closer. “You were just trying to keep me safe. And I — I should’ve trusted you.” Liam’s eyes brimmed with emotion, his grip on the gun loosening ever so slightly. “I did it all for you,” he breathed. Emma nodded, her heart hammering so hard she thought it might burst. “I know,” she said, her voice barely a breath. And then she lunged. She slammed into Liam with everything she had, the force of her body sending them both crashing to the ground. The gun went off — a deafening blast echoing through the forest. Emma’s ears rang as she scrambled to her feet, kicking the gun out of Liam’s reach. Daniel staggered over, collapsing onto Liam to pin him down. “Run, Emma!” Daniel rasped. But Emma didn’t run. She grabbed the gun, hands shaking, and pointed it at Liam. For the first time, Liam looked afraid. “Emma,” he whispered, tears streaking down his face. Emma’s chest heaved. Her finger hovered over the trigger. But she didn’t pull it. The sound of sirens pierced through the night, red and blue lights flashing in the distance. Emma’s legs finally gave out, and she collapsed onto the cold pavement. It was over. Or so she thought. Because as the police dragged Liam away, he didn’t scream or fight. He just smiled. And as they pushed him into the back of the squad car, he mouthed three chilling words: I’ll find you. Emma’s blood ran cold. Because in that moment, she knew — this wasn’t the end. It was only the beginning.
