Chapter 4: The Answer

979 Words
The next evening, Emma made her way to the park again. Her heart pounded as she slipped the letter under the wooden bench. Then, she walked away—but this time, she didn’t go far. She hid behind a tree, just close enough to see if anyone would come. And then… she waited. --- The Mysterious Figure Minutes passed. Then an hour. The sun had almost set when she finally saw it. A figure in a hoodie approached the bench. Emma’s breath caught in her throat. They crouched down, reaching under the bench— Taking her letter. Her heart pounded violently. This was it. This was the person who had been writing to her. Who was it? She squinted, trying to see their face, but the hoodie covered most of their features. Then, just as quickly as they came, the figure stood up—and walked away. Emma hesitated for only a second before she followed. --- A Dangerous Chase She kept her distance, moving quietly through the dimly lit streets. The figure walked at a steady pace, turning into a familiar road— Wait. This path… it led to the bakery. Emma’s blood ran cold. No. It can’t be. She moved faster, staying in the shadows. The figure stopped near the back entrance of the bakery, looking around cautiously. Emma pressed herself against a wall, holding her breath. Then, the figure reached into their hoodie and pulled something out. A piece of paper. Emma’s letter. The figure unfolded it and read. Then, they sighed—a deep, familiar sigh. And at that moment, Emma knew. The hoodie slipped down slightly, revealing the face underneath. Daniel. --- The Truth Revealed Emma’s entire body tensed. Daniel? She felt like she couldn’t breathe. All this time… it was him? The one writing those letters? The one watching her? Her mind screamed at her to run, to confront him, to do something—but she just stood there, frozen. Then, as if sensing her presence, Daniel suddenly turned. Their eyes met. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, Daniel’s expression changed—from shock to something else. Resignation. He sighed again, rubbing his forehead. “Emma,” he said, his voice low. “You weren’t supposed to know.” Emma felt like she had been punched in the stomach. Her hands clenched into fists. “So it was you.” Daniel didn’t deny it. He folded the letter and slipped it into his pocket. “Let’s talk inside.” Emma hesitated. Was this safe? But she needed answers. Taking a deep breath, she followed him into the bakery. --- The Confession Inside, the air was thick with the scent of flour and sugar. The bakery was quiet, empty except for the two of them. Daniel turned to face her, leaning against the counter. He looked… tired. “I know you’re angry,” he said. “And I don’t blame you.” Emma crossed her arms, her chest rising and falling rapidly. “Angry? Daniel, you’ve been stalking me!” His jaw tightened. “No. It’s not like that.” “Then explain.” Daniel exhaled slowly, rubbing the back of his neck. “I never meant for this to happen,” he admitted. “I never planned to write those letters. But one night, I saw you sitting alone at the café, looking… sad. And I just—” He stopped, shaking his head. Emma’s fingers curled around the edge of the counter. “So you decided to send me a mystery love letter?” Daniel gave a humorless laugh. “It was supposed to be one letter. Just something to make you smile. But then you replied.” He looked up, his eyes filled with something unreadable. “And I realized… I didn’t want to stop.” Emma’s breath hitched. She had never seen Daniel like this before—so raw, so vulnerable. “But why hide?” she whispered. “Why not just tell me?” Daniel’s expression darkened. “Because I knew you wouldn’t see me the same way.” Her stomach flipped. What was he saying? Daniel ran a hand down his face. “Emma… I’ve been in love with you for years.” The words hit her like a wave. Emma took a step back, her mind struggling to process. Daniel? In love with her? All this time? “But you never said anything,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Daniel let out a soft chuckle, but there was no humor in it. “Yeah. Because I knew how you saw me. As just… a friend.” Emma’s heart pounded in her ears. Was that true? Had she really been so blind? She swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. “Daniel,” she said carefully, “if you cared about me… why do this? Why the secrets? Why not just tell me?” Daniel looked away. “Because I was afraid,” he admitted. “Afraid that if I told you the truth… you’d walk away.” Silence stretched between them. Emma’s mind was a storm of emotions—anger, confusion, sadness, but most of all… uncertainty. Daniel was her best friend. She trusted him. But this… this changed everything. She exhaled shakily. “I don’t know what to say.” Daniel nodded, as if he had expected that. “Then don’t say anything,” he murmured. “Just… take your time.” He turned to leave, but before he could, Emma called out— “Daniel.” He paused. Emma hesitated, her heart hammering. Then, softly, she asked— “Was any of it real?” Daniel turned back to her, his gaze deep and unflinching. “Yes,” he said. “Every word.” Then, without another word, he walked away. Leaving Emma standing there, her entire world turned upside down.
