Emily’s POV
It all happened so fast.
Barely an hour later, Dario and I arrived at the Marriage Registry. The moment we walked in, everywhere went quiet and people scurried out of the way.
“What’s going on?”
“They probably haven’t seen a woman as beautiful as you before.” Dario’s attempt at humor failed terribly.
A man who appeared to be in his late forties approached us flanked by two others.
“Welcome, Mr Davin, it’s a pleasure having you here.”
Dario nodded at them and they exchanged a few words before the man led us to an office.
The documents had already been prepared and were handed to us the moment we settled down.
“Are you sure about this ma’am?” The register asked, noticing me hesitating.
I glanced up from the document I’ve been staring at for minutes now to find Dario and the man looking at me.
“Yes, just.. just give me a minute.” My eyes returned to the document in front of me.
His name and signature were already scribbled at the bottom of the paper.
All that was left was mine but for some reason, my pen hovered above the document.
“Here goes nothing.” I murmured and quickly signed on my part.
“Congratulations, Mr and Mrs Davin, you’re now officially husband and wife.” The register got to his feet immediately after Dario did and nodded.
I could’ve sworn I saw something that looked like fear flashed across his eyes but it disappeared as quickly as it came. Speaking of which, I didn’t fail to notice the way everyone cowered and scurried away the moment Dario and I walked in here.
“Come on,” I startled as I felt a hand snaking around my waist .
“What are you doing?”
“Maintaining public image.” He grinned and led us away. “We are married now, remember, so you must act as my wife. The world needs to see the sweet and loving couple we are.”
I almost rolled my eyes at his words but forced a smile instead and nodded. “Sure, anything for my lovely husband.”
His smile grew bigger but I looked away, not wanting to get drawn into those icy blue eyes.
A black Rolls-Royce was waiting by the time we exited the building.
Dario led me to the back and opened the door for me like some gentlemen, getting in only after he made sure I was settled.
I tried my best to remain quiet all through the ride but an unsettling feeling gnawed at my stomach.
Dario Davin…. His name popped into my mind again.
I was sure I'd heard that name somewhere before. But where?
I tried to think, where on earth had I heard the name before?
That was when it clicked.
My eyes widened as recognition finally dawned on me.
How on earth did I not recognize him?
Multi-billionaire, Dario Davin.
“Oh goodness.” I gasped as my head snapped towards him.
Not even in my wildest dream had I imagined I would end up marrying the richest billionaire in NewYork.
A man whose reputation preceded him.
Dario Davin is a cold business man who rarely appeared in public. Even in his forties, he was known as one of the hottest and the most sought after billionaires in the whole of NewYork.
“Stop drooling and take a picture, wife. It will last forever.”
His words snapped me back to my senses. Embarrassment washed over me and I quickly looked away.
“Don’t worry, we will be home soon.”
Home…
The word felt foreign to my ears.
I couldn’t believe I wouldn’t be returning to my own comfort zone.
“Oh my goodness, Sophia!” I bolted, remembering my younger sister who was still back at our house.
How on earth did I forget about Sophia?
I hadn’t been home all night, she must have been so worried.
I scrambled around for my phone when I realized I didn’t have it. It had fallen somewhere back in the rain.
Great.
I had to call Sophia and tell her about all that had happened.
I glanced at the man seated beside me whose eyes were still closed. His head was resting on the backseat and creases on his forehead showed he was deep in thought.
“Can you lend me your phone? I need to call my sister. She must be so worried if I don't return home.”
“You don't have to worry about that. She's already been informed.”
“What? H-How?”
“I have my ways.” His eyes were still closed as he crossed his hands over his chest. “And I told you, for as long as I'm here, you don't have to worry about anything.”
There was something about the way he said it that made my heart flutter. I knew I should’ve been comforted, but his words were only unsettling.
They did nothing to make me feel better.
About ten minutes later, the car slowed down. We turned a corner, and entered through tall black gates guarded by several men dressed in black suits.
I stared in awe as a grand mansion came into my view. It took a few more minutes for our car to finally stop in front of the house.
Again, like some gentleman, Dario got out to open my door. He offered me his hand and I took it, stepping out slowly, my shoes clicking on the stone driveway.
“Welcome home, Wifey,”
I nearly tripped at his words.
“Wifey? Seriously?”
Dario didn’t reply but held my hand and began to lead me inside.
A butler was already waiting by the door.
“Welcome home, Mrs Davin.” The lanky man greeted with a smile. I smiled back, nodding my head in response.
Dario let go the moment we stopped in and my jaw dropped.
The largest chandelier I’ve ever seen was made of white crystals hung above, its crystals catching the light beautifully as it shimmered above. The walls were painted in white and gold, with sleek white marble floor beneath to match. Different artworks lined the walls, stretching as far as the eye could see.
“Do you want to rest?” Dario’s voice distracted me.
I looked over to see him undoing the cuffs of his shirt.
“I can show you to our room.”
“Our room?” My brows raised slightly. “Will we be sleeping in the same room?”
He looked at me like I’ve grown two heads then took a step closer.
My breath hitched.
“Did you think we would be staying in separate rooms? I didn’t marry you to put you in a guest suite, Emily.” He whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers grazed my cheek lightly and my entire body froze. Heat pulsed through my spine like lightning.
“You’re mine. And you’ll sleep wherever I sleep.” He continued and leaned in slowly, his lips inches from mine.
The scent of his cologne blocked my senses and made it hard for me to think.
I swallowed as my eyes drifted to his lips.
Was he going to kiss me again?
I didn’t realize I was leaning into him till our lips brushed past each other.
Dario paused and stared into my eyes, giving me the chance to pull away but I didn’t.
At that moment, all I could think of was what he tasted like again.
His lips were about to touch mine when his phone buzzed.
A low growl rumbled from his throat as he pulled away, jaw tight. “I have to take this.”
I blinked and nodded like a fool.
Dario didn’t say another word as he turned and walked down a hallway, pressing the phone to his ear.
I stood there for a few seconds then resumed looking around.
Every inch of this place screamed luxury and power, unlike any I’ve ever seen before.
My curiosity soon got the better of me and I started to move.
A short walk wouldn’t hurt right?
I found my way down one of the long, dim hallways which was lined with a series of artworks. I passed what looked like a mini library, a piano room, and even an indoor garden behind some tall glass doors as I navigated my way through the mansion.
Okay, maybe life here wouldn’t be so bad after all.
I had just passed by a room when something shiny caught my eyes.
No way.
I retracted my steps.
The room wasn't like the others and had its door slightly opened, like someone had walked in and forgotten to close it.
I took a step closer, not wanting to believe it.
My hands trembled as I pushed the door open completely and right there on the floor was a necklace.
But it wasn’t just any necklace.
It was a thin silver chain with a tiny locket shaped like a teardrop.
I froze when I recognized it.
No… it couldn’t be.
My breath stilled as I stumbled into the room and grabbed the jewelry, eyes widening in horror.
What the hell was Sophia’s necklace doing here?
