CHAPTER 14: THE ARCHITECT OF CHAOS
The crimson emergency lights pulsed like a failing heartbeat, casting long, jagged shadows across the cold steel walls of Vault 404. The blaring siren was deafening, a mechanical scream that amplified the terror gripping Haya’s chest.
"Jibraan, the doors!" Haya choked out, her voice trembling as she clutched Zayyan’s bag like a shield. Through the reinforced glass, she could see the heavy titanium security gates grinding downward, threatening to seal them into a subterranean tomb.
"I’ve got you. Keep your eyes on me," Jibraan commanded. His voice was a calm, lethal contrast to the chaos around them. With his left arm anchoring Haya behind his back, his right hand leveled his firearm toward the entrance.
Outside the glass, the bank guards lay motionless. Two masked figures dressed in tactical gear stepped through the smoke, their automatic weapons raised. They weren't looking for money; their movements were precise, targeted. Zarar’s old associates had come to claim the dead man's secrets, fueled by the false tip-off ReTaaj had planted.
Bang!
The heavy glass webbed with fractures as a high-caliber round slammed into it. Jibraan didn't flinch. He fired two precise shots through the fracturing gap, forcing the attackers to dive for cover.
"The back exit, through the manager's private corridor," Jibraan muttered, gripping Haya’s wrist. "We move now!"
A few levels above, parked in the shadows of the financial district’s underground parking lot, ReTaaj sat inside the black SUV, staring intently at the glowing tablet in Asif’s hands.
Green progress bars danced across the screen, downloading a massive stream of encrypted data.
"Sixty percent... seventy..." Asif muttered, a nervous sweat breaking out on his forehead. "The bank's secondary node is fighting the firmware, ReTaaj. If the system forces a hard reboot, the download cuts off."
"Keep it open," ReTaaj ordered, her fingers tightening around the leather steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. Her eyes were fixed on the security feeds she had intercepted. On the screen, she watched Jibraan guiding a panicked Haya through a dark, narrow corridor, firing backward to keep the attackers at bay.
Seeing Haya terrified should have brought ReTaaj absolute satisfaction. Instead, looking at how fiercely Jibraan protected her only fanned the flames of her resentment.
"Eighty-five percent," Asif called out, his voice snapping her back to reality. "The armed crew is closing in on Jibraan’s position near the service elevator."
"Good," ReTaaj whispered, a cold, ruthless smile touching her lips. "Let them bleed him dry. The moment that data hits one hundred, we leave. Let Dubai swallow them whole."
The service corridor smelled of damp concrete and ozone. Jibraan kicked open a heavy fire door, pushing Haya ahead of him into the dim, echoing stairwell.
"Jibraan, your shoulder!" Haya gasped, her eyes widening in horror as she noticed a dark, blooming stain on his grey suit jacket. A stray fragment from the shattered vault glass had sliced deep into his skin.
"It's a scratch," he lied smoothly, his face a mask of iron determination. He shoved the velvet-lined box containing Zarar’s hard drives into her hands. "Listen to me carefully. My security detail is waiting at the loading dock just past these stairs. You run, you get into the armored vehicle, and you do not look back."
"No! I'm not leaving you!" Haya cried, tears finally spilling over her cheeks.
"You have to," Jibraan said, his eyes softening for a fraction of a second as he looked at her. "For Zayyan. For us. I will be right behind you."
Before she could protest, footsteps echoed from the stairs below. Jibraan spun around, firing two heavy rounds down the stairwell, pushing Haya upward toward the exit doors.
Back in the SUV, the tablet emitted a sharp, high-pitched chime.

Asif let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for hours. "We got it. The offshore assets, the political bribes, the dummy corporations—everything Zarar hid is ours."
ReTaaj slowly pulled her dark sunglasses back over her eyes, hiding the cold fire within them. She shifted the SUV into drive, the engine roaring to life in the quiet parking structure.
"Let's go," ReTaaj said smoothly, steering the vehicle out into the blinding Dubai sunlight. "Jibraan’s empire is about to fall, and Haya won't even see the storm coming."
