CHAPTER 15: THE SHADOW’S GAMBIT
The blistering Dubai heat felt suffocating, but it was nothing compared to the cold dread settling in ReTaaj’s chest as she navigated the SUV through the neon-lit streets. Beside her, Asif tapped frantically on the tablet, his face pale in the screen's glow.
"ReTaaj, we have the data, but Jibraan’s security team has reached the vault. Zarar is dead, but his old associates are acting like vultures, circling for what’s left of his empire. If Jibraan makes it out alive, he’ll come for us."
ReTaaj didn't blink, her eyes locked on the road, though her mind was haunted by the image of Jibraan bleeding in the dark. "He will survive," she said, her voice like ice. "They aren't fighting for Zarar anymore; they are fighting for the power vacuum he left behind. If Jibraan realizes who is pulling the strings now, he’ll lead us straight to the new architect."
Inside the vault corridor, the air was thick with the acrid stench of cordite and smoke. Jibraan leaned against a support pillar, his shoulder throbbing with a sharp, rhythmic agony. He gripped his pistol, his knuckles white.
"Haya!" he barked, his voice straining.
The heavy loading dock door was just feet away. Haya stood there, her entire frame trembling, clutching the box of hard drives to her chest like a lifeline. In her other hand, she gripped the bag containing Zayyan’s belongings—a constant, painful reminder of why they were fighting.
"Jibraan, come on! We have to go!" Haya screamed, her voice cracking.
Suddenly, the elevator bell chimed. A tactical team spilled into the lobby—Zarar’s former associates, now working for a new, unknown master. Jibraan’s jaw tightened. He knew these men weren't here for money. They were scavengers, and the sight of them confirmed his worst fear: Zarar’s death had not ended the nightmare; it had only unleashed a new one.
"They aren't fighting for a ghost," Jibraan hissed to himself. "They’re fighting for a throne."
He surged forward, moving with the cold, lethal precision of a predator. Each shot was deliberate, silencing one attacker after another. He wasn't just a man fighting for his life; he was a father ensuring his son had a world to grow up in.
"Ma'am, we have to move! Now!" the head guard shouted, pulling the armored vehicle’s door wide open for Haya.
"No! Not without him!" Haya cried, her eyes darting between the safety of the van and the chaos where Jibraan was fading into the smoke.
A massive explosion rocked the corridor. The ceiling groaned and collapsed, showering the path with concrete and twisted rebar, sealing the exit. Haya watched in horror through the van’s window as a wall of dust and debris cut them off from Jibraan. He was trapped on the other side, surrounded, his silhouette barely visible against the flashing emergency lights.
ReTaaj’s SUV pulled into a distant parking spot, observing the scene from the shadows. She caught the reflection of the crumbling vault in her side mirror and offered a cold, satisfied smile.
"Asif," she murmured, watching the c*****e, "Zarar might be gone, but the game is far from over. Let’s see how our hero survives when he has everything to lose."
