VELVET HOURS CHAPTER 13: THE DESCENT INTO THE CRESCENT “Coming back to the place that broke you is never about healing. It’s about ensuring the ruins don’t bury you alive.” The private jet broke through the heavy morning fog, landing smoothly at Dubai International Airport at exactly 9:00 AM. Inside the cabin, Haya’s hands were shaking as she buckled Zayyan into his travel seat. The sight of the Dubai skyline—glistening, golden, and terrifyingly familiar—made her stomach turn. To the world, this city was a playground of dreams. To her, it was the graveyard of her innocence. "Look at me," Jibraan said, his voice a low, steady anchor amid her rising panic. He unbuckled his seatbelt and knelt in front of her, placing his hands over hers. "The security detail is already on the tarmac. We go straight to the Grand Crescent Bank, we clear the locker, and by tonight, we will be on a flight back to the villa. I am right here." Haya nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "I don't care about the money or the offshore accounts, Jibraan. I just want Zarar’s ghost out of our lives." "He is dead, Haya. A dead man can't hurt you anymore," Jibraan promised, though his own eyes remained hard, scanning the tarmac outside. He knew that while Zarar was in a grave, the monsters he had associated with were very much alive—and they would be watching Locker 404. A few miles away, inside a sleek black SUV parked across the street from the Grand Crescent Bank, ReTaaj watched the heavy glass doors of the financial district through dark sunglasses. Beside her sat Asif, a tablet glowing in his lap. "They just bypassed airport customs through the royal terminal," Asif reported, his fingers flying across the screen. "Jibraan’s security convoy is moving fast. They’ll be here in twenty minutes." ReTaaj tapped her manicured nails against the leather steering wheel. The desperation that had consumed her in that dusty repair shop yesterday had hardened into pure, calculating malice. She had spent months in the shadows, losing her status, her money, and her pride while Haya played the protected housewife in a seaside paradise. "Did you slip the modified firmware into the bank’s secondary security node?" ReTaaj asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "It’s done," Asif smirked. "The moment Haya inserts that brass key into Vault 404, the bank's internal alarm won't go off, but our server will copy the digital decryption keys simultaneously. You’ll have the financial secrets of half the country in your hand before Jibraan even steps out of the vault." "And the tip-off to Zarar’s old associates?" "Sent," Asif replied. "They think Jibraan is coming to wipe out their assets. By the time Jibraan realizes he’s been set up, he’ll be surrounded by men who have nothing left to lose." ReTaaj pulled off her glasses, her eyes flashing with a cold, vindictive fire. "Perfect. Let them tear each other apart. I’ll take the files, and Haya will take the blame." The air inside the underground vault of the Grand Crescent Bank was freezing, smelling of old paper, cold steel, and heavy security. Jibraan stood right behind Haya as the bank manager escorted them past row after row of steel deposit boxes. The manager stopped in front of a heavy, reinforced door labeled 404. "The vault requires the biometric signature of the registered beneficiary, followed by the physical key," the manager explained politely, stepping back to give them privacy. Haya looked at the brass key in her hand. Her palm was sweating. She stepped forward and placed her trembling thumb onto the digital scanner. Biometric confirmed. Welcome, Haya Bint Faris. A heavy mechanical click echoed through the silent vault. Haya slid the intricate brass key into the lock and turned it. With a slow, ominous groan, the heavy steel door of Locker 404 swung open. Inside lay a single, velvet-lined box. Jibraan reached past her, his protective instincts kicking in. He pulled the box out and opened it. Inside were three heavily encrypted black hard drives and a handwritten letter addressed to Haya in Zarar’s elegant, terrifying handwriting. Before Haya could even reach for the letter, the bright lights of the underground vault suddenly flickered and plunged into complete darkness. The emergency red lights kicked in, bathing the cold steel room in a bloody, crimson glow. A loud, mechanical lockdown siren began to wail through the halls. "Jibraan!" Haya cried out, clutching Zayyan’s diaper bag to her chest as fear paralyzed her. Jibraan instantly slammed the velvet box shut, pulling his concealed firearm from his jacket in one swift, fluid motion. He threw his arm around Haya, pulling her behind his broad shoulders. "Stay down!" Jibraan commanded, his voice cutting through the blaring siren. Through the thick glass of the vault doors, Jibraan saw the bank guards falling to the floor as heavy, armed silhouettes moved through the smoke of the hallway. ReTaaj's trap had just sprung shut, and the shadow of Dubai had finally caught up to them. END OF CHAPTER 13
