CHAPTER 16: Shadows of the Mind

657 Words
Darkwood Forest was eerily silent after the recent battles. May and Ze walked cautiously, alert to every rustle of leaves, every shifting shadow. Zayn, normally so composed, was unusually quiet, his eyes scanning the trees like they held secrets only he could see. Suddenly, the air grew heavy. Shadows flickered unnaturally around Zayn, pulsating like a heartbeat. His jaw tightened. “Zayn?” May asked, stepping closer. “Are you… okay?” He didn’t respond. His eyes glazed over for a moment, and then a whisper echoed in their minds — soft, seductive, and dark. “You’ve failed before, Zayn. You cannot protect them. You never will.” The voice was familiar, yet horrifying. It twisted through his thoughts, coiling around his mind. “Your precious May… your team… they will die because of you. Join me, and I can spare them. Or refuse, and watch as everything you love burns.” Zayn’s hands shook, shadows pulsing violently around him. He collapsed to his knees, memories flashing before his eyes: May lying injured, screaming as monsters tore through the forest. Xander and Ze were caught off guard, overwhelmed by the creatures. Villagers he had sworn to protect were crushed by claws and fire. His own failure, paralyzing, as he reached for them and could do nothing. “It’s all your fault…” Kaelthorn whispered. “Join me. End your pain. Control the Realm. Protect them by my side. Refuse, and they all die.” Zayn’s shadow blades flickered erratically, slicing the forest floor, his breaths coming in sharp, uneven gasps. Rage, guilt, and fear collided within him. May rushed forward, placing her hands on his shoulders. “Zayn! Snap out of it! You’re not alone — we’re here, we’re with you!” But even her voice couldn’t fully reach him. The visions of death and destruction gnawed at his heart. He saw May crushed under a beast, Ze caught in a whirl of claws, Xander and K struck down one by one. Every failure amplified, every mistake magnified. Tears stung his eyes. “No… no, I… I can’t… I can’t lose them!” he shouted, shadows thrashing violently, whipping through the trees like a storm. Kaelthorn’s voice sneered inside his mind, “See how fragile you are, Zayn? You are nothing without me. You are already broken.” May gritted her teeth. “You’re not broken! You’re stronger than this! Fight it!” She drew herself up, wind energy spiraling around her. “If you give in, everything we’ve fought for dies — including you!” Ze stepped forward, water cooling around his arms. “Remember who you are, Zayn. The Old Five. Your friends. Your team. Your family. You’ve protected all of us before — you can do it again!” The shadows around Zayn flared, then pulsed erratically as if struggling against an invisible chain. His chest heaved, eyes flicking between the visions of the fallen and the determined faces of May and Ze. Finally, with a guttural shout, Zayn slammed his fists into the earth, shadows exploding outward, ripping the visions apart. The forest shook. The whispers of Kaelthorn hissed and recoiled, then vanished — for now. Zayn fell to his knees, chest heaving, shadows flickering weakly around him. His hands trembled, but the storm inside him had subsided — just slightly. May knelt beside him. “It’s over… you’re still here.” Zayn’s voice was raw, broken, but filled with grim determination. “It’s not over… not yet. But… I won’t let him control me. Not him… not Kaelthorn… and never anyone who threatens my team.” Ze placed a hand on his shoulder. “Good. We’ll face him together. All of us. You don’t have to fight alone.” Zayn’s eyes glinted with renewed resolve, shadows coiling around him like living armor once more. The forest was silent, but the lingering pulse of Kaelthorn’s influence reminded them: this was only the beginning.
