CHAPTER THIRTY-ONEThe Dying of the Birds I smothered a gasp behind shaking hands. Knowing Limah’s intentions strengthened my resolve. The Abel Pastor held the answer to my plight and I’d crawl the land until I found him. While Limah rejoiced over the workings of his strange machine, he’d left a blind man guarding the door. His error would cost him and I slipped away. The fresh outside breeze called to me and though I held my breath and readied my fists, no other guards impeded my escape. Soft footsteps carried me to the external door and my fingers shook as I eased the gap wider. Pine needles littered the ground and a hazy light appeared in a sky the colour of slate. My Bee-nature leapt within my breast. I tasted freedom as intoxicating as the stolen sips of fine honeyed wine from Bliss
