POV.
CALLIANA'S
I was about to turn twenty-two and just had one day for me to leave the Eden Pack before I died.
I had already wanted to leave the house before now, but I was waiting till I'm 22.
Our laws prohibit wolves under the age of twenty-two from living solitary lives to curb the rogue population.
“Lena, by tomorrow, we'll leave this pack that it's a hell rather than a home and find a real home anywhere.” I stroked the fur of the star black wolf that became my friend and companion two years ago.
My wolf is an ordinary wolf not a shifter. She's always by my side, which made her so much hated by the pack, the same way they hated me.
‘'What are you doing here?” A sharp voice cut into the serene air behind the pack's house.
“Why do you always like wasting time?” I hurried to my feet as Clara approached me.
“You rejected slot!” My face snapped to the side as I stumbled, and her palm connected with my right cheek in a resounding slap.
“I am on break.” Indignation rang in my tone as I cradled my cheek.
“But you know that I deserve to rest after working non-stop for fifteen hours and…. …” Another slap cut me off before I finished.
“You b***h” screamed. “How dare you talk back to me?” She stepped closer but paused when Lena growled low in her throat.
Lena is my friend but an ordinary wolf, and cannot shift. She's always by my side and is so much hated by everyone in the pack. I've always wanted her to hide in the shadows so she won't be seen, but she has always insisted on staying by my side.
“Lena, please, just hold on,” I warned my friend. She had suffered cruel torture for my name's sake, yet every time I pushed her to leave, she always came back to me.”
“You and this your stupid b***h,” Clara insulted, eyeing Lena who kept growling, the intensity going higher.
“Well,” she rolled her eyes pretending the sound coming from Lena didn't terrify her.
“I am reporting you to my father and you know what the outcome would be.”
With that she brushed past me, her shoulder hitting me so hard that I almost stumbled.
I knew what would happen next. I started begging Lena not to react.
Lena quickly lunged at Clara, his claws sinking into her arms as Clara shifted immediately.
“Lena, get off her. You'll land me in trouble.” I cried in a voice choked with emotion. I knew that the whole thing would bounce back on me, which I didn't want to happen. I tried separating them but couldn't.
Lena fought Clara like a hungry and wounded lion.
Clara, the Alpha's daughter, who had just shifted, could not compete with Lena's strength because she is so strong.
“Clara,” a voice thundered from behind me. I quickly turned and saw Julius as he ran over to the battling wolves.
“What did you do?” The expression on Julius's face made shivers run down my spine.
“Julius,” Clara cried out with wickedness laced in her voice.
“She set that violent wolf to attack me when I didn't do anything to her.”
“That's a lie. She bumped into me and Lena defended.
“Keep quiet!” I flinched at the venom that came out of his voice.
“Why can't you stay a day without causing trouble?” He growled at my face.
“Now that this useless wolf has hurt my sister, what is your gain?”
I tried explaining but was not listened to.
Although I knew that Lena beat the hell out of Clara, as soon as she saw her brother, she started acting up, which made her brother very furious at me and my wolf..
“I am sorry,” I bowed my head fighting back the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes.
Ever since I knew the difference between good and bad, I've not been treated fair. Everything that comes up must be something that'll be against me.
“Sorry for yourself.” My blood ran cold at these words spoken with hostility and hard eyes.
“Chop off its head.” He gave the command to the man standing behind him.
“No, please. Don't do this to Lena. It's not her fault. Punish me instead.” I screamed.
Two hefty men carried my friend and the wolf far away while she fought. I tried to run after them to help Lena but Julian stopped me.
“Don't make any further steps.” The command of an Alpha was impossible to disobey for any wolf.
“Please she's the only one I have. We'll never cause any trouble for you again.
“This will teach you a lesson not to cause trouble again. For you, your punishment will be decided later,” he said.
“I gave you numerous chances to get rid of that dog but you kept it. This is the consequence of disobedience.
My friend and wolf's distant howl echoed in my ears and unfroze my legs. I trembled from head to toe as I ran following the pungent scent of blood that belonged to my only companion.
Unfortunately, I bumped into my superior.
“There you are,” she grabbed my hand.
“Your break ended five minutes ago. You're taking time.” As she spoke, she pulled me closer.
“Don't you know that there are a lot of things to be done or have you forgotten we'll be receiving guests from tonight? She took my hand.
Tomorrow will usher in a new dawn for the Eden Pack. We must do all our work, except you want to offend the incumbent Alpha and his Luna,” she warned me, and I nodded in understanding, but didn't fully understand everything.
Why could I not fully mourn my friend because I am a slave to someone else?
It was easy for her to advise me in a situation she didn't have experience with. If she has ever been in my shoes.
How easy it was for her to postpone my mourning and continue my duties as a slave for a pack that never valued my hard work. All my life, I've been serving this pack, hoping that one day they would see my sacrifice and appreciate me, but all to no avail.
My Lena died for nothing.
My heart ached. Pain crushed me from the inside while I went to continue my chores as advised by my superior. Despite my father being the Beta of the pack, they never allowed me any luxury. The longer I worked, the more tears fell from my eyes. My limbs were tired but my sorrow and grief fueled my work.
I wanted to run and leave everything behind and never look back but the fear of turning rogue made me continue working.
I changed the last sheets after midnight and made my way downstairs to my room on legs that wobbled.
Upon entering my dark and cl
ustered room, after taking my shower and resting, what I saw a few minutes later shocked me.
