There was some rumbling in the press about a shift the in political realm, but it was so far removed from Bruce’s little world, it was hard to keep up. News mostly came by way of the local newspaper, which was usually filled with nothing but close to home births and deaths and gossip, not much concerned with anything happening outside the village. But Bruce read between the lines, the writers’ words somehow seeming more optimistic, showing how things were changing, hopefully for the better. He also read about Edward Standard passing away only a few weeks after he’d moved. Bruce was sad to have lost the chance to speak to him one last time, but he attended the funeral where almost the entire village turned out to say farewell to the old soldier and thank him for his life of service.
