Adam
I blinked my heavy eyes open.
I was back in the room we had been staying in at Lance’s. My mouth was dry and felt cottony. For one split second, I wondered if I had been poisoned with demons blood again, because that’s what it felt like. Every inch of my body ached. Moving, breathing, even just laying still hurt. Every muscle, every bone was tender. And I was hyper aware of it all.
It was odd how I could nearly hear and feel the blood pumping through my veins. My heart’s rhythm increasing as the pain took hold. And not only that, I could hear another’s heartbeat as if I was pressing my ear against their chest. I heard their steady breathing.
Somewhere farther away, I heard movement that I shouldn’t have been able to hear. Soft footfalls in the kitchen. The dull rumble of conversation. If I focused hard enough, I might have been able to discern what they conversed about, however my head chose that instant to split in pain.
A gasp escaped me as I gripped my head. Instantly, Jadea’s concerned face appeared over mine. Cool, soothing fingers traced my temples. She pressed against a few spots on my head and instantly the pressure and searing pain was gone.
How had she done that?
“A little trick I’ve learned along the way,” she grinned at my silent question, her presence within my mind more notable than before.
“W-What happened?” I groaned. Hell! It felt like I had the most terrible hangover ever…
She chuckled at my comparison. “I’m not surprised you don’t remember.”
“Remember what?”
“Your turning,” she grinned softly down at me.
My turning? Wait!
I bolted up and instantly regretted the motion, my gaze spinning. “Careful there, vanilla. The day after is the worst from what I hear. It’s like terrible growing pains because of what the body has gone through. And, it is also said, it might take some time before you remember what happened.”
“What happened, if you don’t mind me asking?” I mumbled as I pushed myself back until I was sitting up against the headboard.
“Well, you shifted into your wolf,” she started. “And you went on the customary hunt that solidifies your bond with your wolf.”
My wolf?
I felt him, coiled within me. He had been resting until he’d caught a whiff of Jadea’s intoxicating scent.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in, taking her natural scent deep into my lungs. And that’s when he lashed out, demanding I take what was mine.
Before I knew what was happening, I had rolled over onto her, pinning her beneath my body. I felt her shift under me and I couldn’t stop the groan that escaped at her enticing movements. My lips caught her gasp while my hands immediately went to work.
Yet, none of this was satisfying. I needed more. I craved something far more delectable.
My hearing zeroed in on the rhythmic pulse at her neck.
“Adam,” I heard her warning both aloud and in my mind. “Wait—
But my body wasn’t my own. The wolf had taken over. All I could see was red. All I could taste was her sweet blood as it rushed over my tongue. All I could smell was her sweet, intoxicating scent.
I felt her body’s instant response and knew this was enjoyable. Almost orgasmic in nature. f**k! I felt my desire straining, wanting to be buried deep inside of her. I was losing myself in the ecstasy of this new experience, I didn’t realize I was hurting her. I didn’t realize the danger I had put her in…
“Adam. You will stop.” I felt her command take hold. It was powerful. Intense. I winced at the force as it ripped through my mind and engaged my wolf head on. I felt him bare his teeth, wanting to challenge her dominance. “You will stop this, now,” she growled, her wolf bearing down and I felt mine finally give and retreat.
The instant he was gone, I pulled away in horror at what I had done. However, Jadea’s hand caught the back of my neck before I could escape. “Lick the wound,” she commanded aloud and I obeyed without thought. My tongue soothed over the gaping hole in her neck.
Shit!
I had done that.
“It’s okay, Adam,” she soothed. “It was an accident. Those will occur as you start getting used to your new body.”
That did nothing to ease the guilt in my chest.
I hadn’t even been a wolf for a whole twenty four hours and I was proving to be terrible at it too.
Her hand shifted, moving to my chest where she gently pushed and I, once again, obeyed her silent command. I was off of her immediately right as Garret and Blade rushed into the room.
“Well s**t,” Garret started, “that’s a little more than a simple bite Jay.”
“Briar!” Blade called down the hallway. “We’ll need the gauze and tape too! Hell! Just bring the whole emergency pack!”
Jadea rolled and was sitting up with her feet dangling over the edge. One hand clasped over the wound in her neck but the blood couldn’t be contained. It oozed out from between her fingers and down her smooth skin, staining her shirt.
I wanted to do something. I felt useless and terrible for what I’d done. But I wasn’t sure if she would want me to touch her right now after the horrendous thing I’d just done—
Her other hand reached out and took mine. My gaze darted to hers and her intense stare calmed me more than her words could. I felt her fully merge my mind with hers and I knew she wasn’t upset.
“Adam,” Garret’s voice ripped through the silence. His hand had replaced Jadea’s as he pressed a thick, absorbent towelette against the wound. “I need you to hold this while I open the clotting agent.”
My fingers deftly pressed against the towelette, my other hand resting against the opposite side of Jadea’s neck.
A few seconds later Garret applied the clotting agent and her wound stopped bleeding. They got her patched up rather quickly and provided a medical grade blood pack for her to replenish what I’d taken.
“Thank you,” she murmured to her pack and they filed out of the room, leaving us alone once more.
“I-I d-don’t th-think I sh-should b-b-be left alone w-with you,” I stuttered as I jumped off the bed and put distance between us.
I didn’t know when my wolf would awaken once again and seek her blood…
Jadea’s firm grip caught my wrist. “Adam,” she said my name firmly, “I need you to sit down. Let me explain what just happened and I will also give you some pointers on how to control the wolf within when he is demanding to get out.”
