Her stepmother’s voice echoed through the hospital room, oozing fake warmth.
How I wish she knew the whole charade was collapsing. If I hadn’t overheard her whispering on the phone, I would’ve never guessed her true colors.
I stood by the doorway, waiting for the doctor to complete my post-op bloodwork. I had just donated a kidney to Laura's father, and the procedure had left me weak….but alert.
That’s when Elane showed up.
She entered the room, unaware I was behind the curtain.
> “My love, just give me more time,” she whispered into her phone. “She’s already given me three million. I’ll get the rest soon. Her father needs a kidney, so I’m tied up right now. Just don’t call me again—someone might hear us.”
