The moment he heard the word "husband," Alistair exploded with rage.
"Husband? What husband could you possibly have? That bastard who knocked you up with a bastard child? You tell me who he is. I wanna see which lowlife's got a death wish, touching my woman." He clenched his fists, jumping and shouting in front of me like a rabid dog with its tail stepped on.
I couldn't be bothered to argue with him anymore. I turned and headed for the escalator.
Seeing I was determined to leave, he lunged after me, grabbing for my arm. I shook him off violently, but the recoil sent me pitching forward. I lost my balance, hurtling straight toward the escalator.
My heart nearly stopped.
Instinctively, I reached for the handrail. At the last second, I twisted my body sideways with every ounce of strength I had. Once I steadied myself, a cold wave of terror washed over me. Thank goodness I hadn't worn heels today. If I had, I'd almost certainly have lost the baby.
I turned around. Alistair still stood at the top of the escalator, his expression now a mix of shock and bewilderment instead of rage.
He looked down at his own hands, then up at my pale face, and suddenly rushed down to steady my arm. "Kiara, I'm sorry, are you okay? I just wanted to stop you from leaving. I never meant to—"
I shook off his hand and leaned against the escalator handrail, catching my breath for a long moment.
When my heart finally steadied, I looked up. "Alistair, you almost killed my child."
He froze, silent for a beat, and then the panic on his face slowly faded. "Kiara, I know you did this because you were holding a grudge after I left for two years. You gave in to temptation, but I don't blame you, really," he sighed. "Now that it's happened, I'll accept it. But once the child is born, it has to be sent away. And you can't see that man again. See, I have Ruby's child, and you have someone else's. We've betrayed each other once, so we're even. After we get married, we won't ever mention it again and just live a good life together, okay?"
His absurd words nearly made me laugh out loud.
A man who had fathered a child out of wedlock had the nerve to accuse me of betrayal? The pot calling the kettle black, his sheer audacity was absolutely stunning.
I opened my mouth to retort, but he cut me off before I could get a word out.
He glanced at his wristwatch, spun on his heel, and strode away. "Alright, enough. Rest up for the next couple of days and stop running around. Rest up and recover. In three days, you'll be my bride. I gotta go. Still have to get back to the kid."
I brushed his words off like dust and settled into two blissfully quiet days, not giving him a second thought.
But on the morning of the third day, before I'd even fully woken, the downstairs doorbell blared with a deafening, insistent ring. I shuffled downstairs, still wrapped in my robe, and opened the door. There stood Alistair, decked out in a sharp suit, a grin plastered across his face.
The moment he saw me in my robe, his expression darkened even more. "Kiara, look at the time! Why on earth aren't you in your wedding gown yet?"
I blinked, confused. "Why would I need a wedding dress?"
His expression darkened even more. "For the wedding, obviously! I told you about this days ago."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than an icy voice sliced through the air from behind him.
"So, I was away on business for just a few days and my dear wife is already planning to remarry, and take my child along?"
