The Memory in the Dark

Episode 8: The Memory in the Dark Emma stared at the photographs on the underground wall. One showed her as a child. The other showed Clara. She couldn't understand why they had been placed together. “I don't remember her,” Emma whispered. Alexander stepped closer to the wall. “Neither do I.” The hidden speaker crackled again. A woman's voice filled the room. “Memory can be a dangerous thing.” Emma turned around. “Who are you?” There was no answer. Alexander searched the walls for another entrance. “Show yourself.” The voice laughed softly. “You're still trying to protect her.” “Who?” “Emma.” Emma's heart began racing. “What do you want from me?” The voice became serious. “The truth.” Alexander found a small control panel beside the door. He examined it. “There's no way out.” Emma looked at the photographs again. Then she noticed something. Her childhood photograph had a date written underneath it. Eight years ago. She frowned. “That can't be right.” “What?” “I was younger than this.” Alexander looked at the picture. “Someone changed the date.” Emma shook her head. “No.” She pointed to the photograph. “Look at my clothes.” Alexander examined it. Emma was wearing a small necklace. A silver necklace with a tiny star-shaped pendant. “I've never seen that necklace before,” she said. Alexander stared at it. “I have.” Emma turned. “Where?” “On Clara.” The room became silent. Emma touched her neck. “What does that mean?” “I don't know.” Suddenly, the cassette recorder switched on by itself. Clara's voice returned. “Emma, if you're listening to this, don't be afraid.” Emma stepped closer. “I know you don't remember me.” Alexander looked at Emma. Clara continued. “When you were eight years old, your mother brought you to the Hayes estate.” Emma's breathing stopped. “That isn't possible.” Alexander looked shocked. Clara continued. “You met Alexander that day.” Emma turned toward him. “You knew me?” Alexander shook his head. “I don't remember.” “You were both children,” Clara said through the recording. “Your parents were helping my family investigate the financial crimes inside Hayes Global.” Emma closed her eyes. A strange image suddenly appeared in her mind. A large garden. A boy standing beside a fountain. A woman holding her hand. A voice saying: “Don't be afraid.” Emma opened her eyes. “I remember something.” Alexander moved closer. “What?” “A garden.” “Where?” “Your estate.” Alexander stared at her. “You were there.” “Yes.” He looked disturbed. “I don't remember you.” “Maybe you were told to forget.” The recording continued. “Emma, your mother trusted Alexander's father. She believed he could protect you.” A pause. “But someone betrayed them.” Emma's voice trembled. “Who?” The recording continued. “I can't say the name on this recording.” “Why?” “Because if they discover this message, they will know where I hid the evidence.” Alexander looked around. “Evidence?” Clara continued. “The evidence is hidden in the place where you made your promise.” Emma immediately remembered the chapel. “The chapel.” Alexander nodded. “But we already searched it.” “Not completely.” They looked at each other. A loud click came from the door. It opened. Emma and Alexander stepped into the hallway. The underground passage led directly beneath the chapel. They climbed the stairs. The chapel was empty. Rebecca was still missing. Alexander looked around. “Where would my father have hidden something?” Emma studied the altar. “Maybe somewhere nobody would think to look.” She walked toward the old wooden cross. Alexander followed. “Why here?” “Because it's the only thing that hasn't changed.” She touched the cross. Nothing happened. Then she noticed a tiny keyhole. “Alexander.” He looked. “I don't have a key.” Emma remembered the metal box. She opened it. Inside was the old key they had found at the railway station. She inserted it. The cross moved. A hidden compartment opened behind it. Inside was a small black notebook. Alexander took it carefully. His father's handwriting appeared on the first page. **For the person who finally remembers.** Emma looked at him. “Open it.” He turned the page. The first entry was dated eight years earlier. It described the investigation. Then Alexander found a name. He stopped. Emma looked at him. “Who is it?” Alexander slowly turned the notebook toward her. The name was: **Rebecca Carter.** Emma's heart sank. “My mother?” Alexander nodded. The notebook explained that Rebecca had worked with Clara and Alexander's father to uncover the financial crimes. But there was something else. Rebecca had secretly taken a copy of the evidence. Alexander turned another page. A sentence was underlined. **Rebecca cannot be trusted with the original evidence.** Emma stepped backward. “No.” Alexander continued reading. “Her actions may have placed Clara and my wife in danger.” Emma shook her head. “My mother wouldn't do that.” “I don't know.” “You don't know her.” “I know.” He closed the notebook. “That's exactly the problem.” Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside. Alexander grabbed Emma's hand. “Someone is coming.” The chapel doors opened. Daniel walked inside. Emma froze. Daniel looked at the notebook. “You found it.” Alexander stepped forward. “You knew it was here.” “Yes.” “Why didn't you take it?” “Because I wanted you to find it.” Alexander's expression hardened. “You've been controlling everything.” Daniel shook his head. “Not everything.” “Where is Rebecca?” “Safe.” “Bring her here.” “I can't.” “Why?” “Because she isn't the person you think she is.” Emma stepped forward. “Stop talking about my mother like she's a criminal.” Daniel looked at her. “I don't think she's a criminal.” “Then what?” Daniel's expression softened. “I think she's a mother who made a terrible choice.” “What choice?” He looked at Alexander. “She chose you.” Alexander frowned. “What does that mean?” “Eight years ago, Rebecca had to choose between protecting her daughter and protecting Clara.” Emma's heart began pounding. “What happened?” Daniel looked at her. “She chose you.” Emma couldn't speak. Alexander stared at Daniel. “What did Rebecca do?” Daniel reached into his coat. He pulled out an old photograph. It showed Rebecca standing beside Alexander's father. Between them was a small child. Emma. On the back were three words: **THE NIGHT SHE FORGOT.** Emma touched the photograph. Another memory flashed. She was inside the Hayes estate. She was crying. Her mother was arguing with someone. Clara was there. Alexander was standing nearby. Then she heard a loud crash. Her mother grabbed her. “Emma, you must forget this.” The memory disappeared. Emma gasped. “I remember.” Alexander caught her before she fell. “What did you see?” “My mother.” “What was she doing?” “She was trying to protect me.” Daniel nodded. “Now you understand.” Emma looked at him. “Who attacked us that night?” Daniel's expression became serious. “Your father.” Emma froze. “My father?” “Yes.” “My father died years ago.” Daniel nodded. “He didn't die by accident.” Emma's eyes filled with tears. “What happened to him?” Daniel looked at Alexander. “That is the final part of the story your mother never told you.” Alexander stepped closer. “Where is Rebecca?” Daniel pointed toward the chapel door. “She'll tell you herself.” The door opened. Rebecca stood there. Her face was filled with fear. Emma ran toward her. “Mom!” Rebecca hugged her. Then she whispered: “I'm sorry.” Emma pulled away. “For what?” Rebecca looked at Alexander. “For lying to both of you.” Alexander stared at her. “What did you lie about?” Rebecca's eyes filled with tears. “Your father wasn't the one who made the promise.” Alexander frowned. “Then who did?” Rebecca looked at Emma. “Your father.” Emma froze. “My father made the promise?” Rebecca nodded. “To Clara.” The chapel fell silent. Emma looked at Alexander. And suddenly, the entire mystery seemed to have a completely different beginning.
