Chapter Twenty-Seven Two hours later Lena arrived on Beth’s doorstep. She spent a while tapping the brass knocker, while Beth observed her from an upstairs window. The young woman held Chance in one arm and used the other to knock at the door. She then peered in the window, waving and calling to catch someone’s attention. Lena was dressed in her trademark halter-necked top and cut-off jeans, her slim brown legs teetering on top of shiny, stiletto-heeled sandals. After what must have seemed to Lena an inordinately long time, Beth descended the spiral staircase to receive her visitor – pleased that this little encounter would be very much on her terms. Beth opened the door. ‘Come in, you two.’ ‘Thanks, my shoulder’s aching,’ Lena hitched Chance a little higher in the crook of her arm. T
