Chapter Thirty-Two Jason wiped beads of sweat from his forehead as he helped move the final item from the van into the house. He paid the men and retreated inside, out of the glare of late afternoon sun. He peered through the curtained window back along the street. The van was driving away. Still no sign of Lena. Where was she? Jason turned on the television to listen to the cricket, then went to the kitchen to pour himself another shot of scotch. Stress over the bank fraud had made him have a drink to calm his jangled nerves. One drink had turned into another and he was already a little buzzed. He needed to call Lena and find out why she was so late. Where was his phone? Jason looked in all the usual places: in pockets, under couch cushions, beneath the bed. No luck. A nagging suspicio
