A sudden jolt woke Emilia up. She gasped and opened her eyes. Blurry images swam before them, and she blinked several times before they came to focus. She looked sideways and saw buildings flash by. The sky outside the window was dark; it was night time already.
The vehicle she was in was bumping slightly as they drove along a highway. She was in the backseat of a car; she suspected it was the black car that had accosted her and her kids.
Her kids!
She suddenly sat upright, then groaned as a banging pain split through her head. But she didn't care. Where the hell was her kids?
"Mommy?" She heard a soft whisper beside her and turned to look. Three scared little white faces stared at her from the darkness of the backseat. She sighed gratefully, then stretched her hand and drew her children to herself.
"I thought I told you to run." She whispered, holding them to her side.
"The bad guy came after us and carried us back to the car." Her son Jasper replied, pointing at the driver. "We thought he would hurt you mommy."
"It's alright, I'm fine." Emilia replied. "I'm glad you're alright. Everything will be fine soon, okay?"
The driver looked up as he heard Jasper's voice and cleared his throat. His eyes found hers through the rearview mirror.
"I see you're awake, miss." He said, giving her a faint smile. "I'm sorry for the way I accosted you."
Emilia's hand immediately went around her neck, where she could feel a ring of bruises. "You're going to pay for this." She said, her voice trembling.
"You know it's not my fault, Ms Emilia. I was following orders from him. I did give you two options, and you chose not to come with me. I had no choice but to use force."
She swallowed past the fear that lodged in her throat. "Who the hell is 'him'? Who is behind all of this? I demand to know."
"Alpha Raymond." The driver replied promptly. "I am a chauffeur in his service. He asked me to come fetch you. He needs your help."
Her heart did a spin as she heard that name. "Alpha Raymond...Ray?" She whispered.
"Exactly, ma'am." The driver replied.
She narrowed her eyes. "And he needs my help because?" She asked.
"That, I cannot say. He only asked me to fetch you."
Emilia sighed and closed her eyes again, leaning against the backseat. She could never reject any offer with that name. Not when she was holding three of his kids. She remembered the calls she had been getting for several days now. Had all this been planned by him?
She could taste the anticipation in her mouth like the bitter aftertaste of coffee. She could feel the eagerness in her heart that came with seeing Ray for the first time in six years. She was still mad at him for rejecting her as his mate, but she could feel all the anger she had gathered over the years like priceless antique objects fade off as she repeated the words to herself:
Raymond wants to see her
Her mind randomly went to Kenneth, who by now would have left her several calls and messages, even dropped by her house. She would find an excuse to give for her disappearance.
Her love story with Raymond had been nothing short of unfortunate. They had been bestfriends for as long as she could remember, probably since when they were born, because their mothers had been very close friends. She'd had a thing for him throughout their teenage years, but he had never felt what she wanted him to feel for her. Miley had been content with their bestfriendship though. She had tried to convince herself that being his best friend was better than not being with him at all, until the night of his 19th birthday, when he had been crowned Alpha-elect.
They'd had a little too much to drink in his bedroom. One thing had led to another, and they'd had s*x. That had been the best night of Miley's 19 years. Ray was a gentle lover, even when he was drunk. She'd imagined doing this with him everyday for the rest of their lives. She'd imagined him carefully loving her, and she knew she would have reciprocated.
The next morning she had woken up in his bed with his scent all over her. She had worn his old clothes without showering, happiness turning her white cheeks rosy, and had gone down for breakfast. Only for her to see Ray standing in the living room, kissing another girl.
He'd explained later that he had come down to meet her there, and had somehow imprinted on her. He'd found his true mate mere hours after sharing his first s*x with her. Her heart had been crushed.
She had left the pack on the night before his wedding to his mate and joined the mortal world. She couldn't stand seeing him slowly fall in love with someone. She couldn't bear to see him do the things she'd always wished they could do together with someone else. She knew her heart would never heal from that.
She had melded into the mortal world as easily as changing clothes, and had tried to forget everything about him. She had gone to college, gotten a medical degree and pursued a career in pediatrics. She had joined a children hospital, quickly rising to become one of their head doctors. She raised her girls and boy as best as she could, while putting all the memories of her past behind her.
She had suffered the worst of heart breaks: that from a best friend. She'd sworn to deprive Ray of the joy of being with his triplets. She'd made a promise to herself to never go back to that pack. And yet here she was, chauffeuring herself towards her old lover and best friend with his three kids. When did her life turn to this?
