CHAPTER 6 ~~DAISY'S POINT OF VIEW~~ I was a wreck on the floor. My hair was a rat’s nest, and my face felt tight from dried tears. I always thought if I caught my husband cheating, it’d be some cliché business trip affair. Instead, I found him betraying me right here in our matrimonial home. I had no one to fall back on, no pack I could report him to right now. The only mini pack here in Greece is Silvercrest, and it's formed by rogues like himself. They agreed among themselves not to have an Alpha. Dad has never been the yardstick for a good man since Mum left him, but he usually says that If you respect a woman, you take your dirt somewhere else. You don't bury yourself in another woman inside your wife's house. It’s the ultimate disrespect. It screams that he doesn’t fear losing me. My breath caught in my throat as the realization dawned on me. I can’t even help it, even if I want to pretend that it isn’t what it is. Nicholas doesn't give a f**k about me, even if he pretends to. The last seventy-two hours have been a horror show: from aborting my pup because he said so, to them taking out my womb without my permission, and then coming back home to the greatest surprise of my life. I gave that boy a shoulder to lean on, and I propelled him to the top. I made the life he’s living right now, and yet I still find it hard to believe that he just did that. He’s always lying that it isn’t what I think. Please. I’m not stupid. I saw the panties, the heels. The only thing I didn’t see was the w***e's face. He guarded that bedroom door like a linebacker, desperate to keep her identity hidden. That part felt… off. It was shady, even for a cheater. I spotted my phone across the rug and grabbed it. My thumb hovered over Kathy’s contact. She gives great advice, but I hesitated. No. I didn't need a friend right now. I scrolled down and hit my lawyer’s number. I made a promise to the twelve-year-old girl I used to be: If a man ever steps out on me, I walk. Immediately. My mom stayed too long, drowning out the kitchen screaming matches with loud music until she eventually just vanished. Dad never taught me how to love, and Mom was too busy surviving to teach me how to keep a family. Nicholas was the final straw. With that, I quickly texted my lawyer to draw up a divorce agreement. The next moment, a loud knock landed on the door, and I sat up. I didn’t say a word, I just leaned in, listening attentively to recognize who was at the door. “D-d-daisy… please open up the door for me, please.” It was Kiesha. “Please open up, my brother is not here. Please just open up for me. I beg you.” I got up, not for her, but because I needed my pain meds from the kitchen. The second I unlocked the door, Kiesha rushed in and crushed me into a hug. “I’m sorry…” she whispered sobbing into my shoulders, and my wolf whined low in my chest, confused why another female scent felt familiar with that of our own mate. She smelled like him right now, which would have been suspicious if she weren't his sister. But she is. He must have hugged her or she used his cologne. “I’m sorry he did that to you,” she said, and my brows drew straight lines on my face out of surprise. He’s her family,I'm surprised she’s not supporting her only brother. She helped me out of the room, walking me to the couch in the sitting room. “I’m sorry, Daisy. You need to freshen up. Trust me, girl, it’s not the end of life,” she cheered me up. “What do you plan to do right now? You’re going to push for divorce, right?” I nodded my head in agreement. “Y-yes.” Though I was a little confused, she seemed to know all the details so quickly. Perhaps her brother filled her in. She nodded in agreement with me. “At least you deserve it.” She caressed my shoulder. “I think you should go take your bath right now, you look a mess, Daisy. After that, we can talk about this. I have the best divorce att—” A sharp knock rang out from the door, cutting her off, and we both narrowed our gazes to the door. It wasn’t him,it wasn't Nicholas. If it was him, he’d just walk in,he doesn’t knock at the door. “Are you expecting anyone?” she turned to me. I shook my head. “No, I’m not expecting anyone. Are you?” “No, I’m not.” With that, she scrambled to her feet and moved to the door to check who was on the other side. Once she opened the door, four Greece police officers filled the doorway immediately, and my eyes went wide. My wolf surged forward, claws rising and ready to shift and rip throats until the silver cuffs glinted, and she shrank back, whimpering. Who are they, and what do they want? Since I have been living in this city, no human police have come to our door like this. Something bad must have happened. The thoughts alone sent shivers down my spine. Kiesha’s hand slid off the doorknob. “Uh… can I help……y'all?” “Yes, you can,” the officer in front lifted his palm firmly, seemingly uninterested in pleasantries. “Ma'am, are you Mrs. Daisy Grant?” Kiesha shook her head vigorously. “No, I'm not, sir.” His eyes shifted to me next. “Are you Mrs. Daisy Grant?” “Yes,” I answered confidently. If only I knew… He flashed his badge. “I’m Officer Dominus, Homicide Division, Alexandra Avenue HQ. Your husband was brutally assaulted last night. He is in critical condition… and you are the prime suspect.” The room tilted. My wolf snarled in my head, furious at the accusation. She's yet to recover from her mate breaking her heart and now this? Why the hell would I want to kill my mate? That would be hurting myself too. “What? No…” Kiesha gasped, her eyes darting between us. “She wouldn’t…” Officer Dominus held up an evidence bag containing a tiny digital recorder. “We have a voice recording from the scene. A death threat. Someone promising to kill him.” He stared me down. “It matches your voice, Mrs. Grant.” Heat rose in my face so fast, and I swallowed hard. Nicholas is near death… and they think it's me? “I’d never kill my husband!” “You need to come with us. You’re allowed to call your attorney, so you can do that right now.” ~~~ I looked at the clock in the human police interrogation room where they had kept me, it was 12:45 p.m. This is my first time in a human police station. I'd never been here before in my entire life, though I'd watched it on television and read a couple of things in books. I’d been sitting here for hours. No one would listen to me. I didn’t care about the charges right now. I just needed to know if Nicholas was okay. Even after everything, I didn't want him dead. The metal door slid open. I sat up straight. “Kiesha…” I breathed out. She rushed in and settled into the metal chair. “How are you doing, Daisy?” She took my hands into hers, squeezing them tightly. “What have they said so far?” I scanned her face. Her eyes were shimmering with pity, but she didn’t look broken. Not like a sister whose brother was on his deathbed. “How is he?” I asked. She swallowed hard. “Not good. But the doctors think he’ll pull through. His wolf should speed up the healing.” “I didn’t do this, Kiesha,” I sobbed. “I swear.” “I know, Daisy. You don’t need to tell me, I know you didn’t do this to him. The threats must have been recorded by the woman he brought in.” The door suddenly slid open again. Finally. Ms. Anna walked in. She’s a werewolf, married to a Delta, but she operates in the human legal system. She’s a shark. One of the best attorneys in Europe. She used to work for my mom. She looked at me, and I felt the weight of her disappointment. Yes, I knew she was disappointed. She had begged me never to marry Nicholas. ‘No identity anywhere. Zero identity, Daisy. That urchin is a leech. It’s just a matter of time before you see it,’she had said that night, and I had threatened to fire her. Stupid me—I was in love. “I need the room, please,” Anna commanded. Kiesha squeezed my hand and slipped out. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, staring at my cuffed hands. “You were right.” Anna didn’t gloat. She just unpacked her files, her eyes fixed on the cuffs. “As your counsel, I’m trying to keep it very simple and flip it to assault, but according to eyewitnesses, you had every intention to kill him and struck his cheek a few times with pure vigor and killer intent,” Anna explained dragging a chair to settle in. “Did you transform into your wolf to hit him?” “No. Never. I'd never do that. “I sobbed.” I didn't do it, Ms. Anna. I'm innocent. I promise you I am innocent.” “No one was there,” I told her. “There was no one in the room except the w***e, and I never saw her face. She can't be a witness… can she?” She heaved a deep sigh. “It’s quite complicated, Daisy. This is Greece, this is a human country and not the pack. The prosecution is pushing for attempted murder, but I’m doing my best to shift it to just assault.” She paused, her cold gaze shifting to me. “Which is why he cannot die.” She grabbed my hands into hers. “Manslaughter if he dies Daisy, premeditated murder is what it is called over here.” I gasped. “W-what…?” “Yes,” she affirmed. “Your husband must not die, or you'll be serving sixteen to twenty-five years in jail, Daisy.” Sweat slid down my back, rolling down my legs to pool in my heels. “That can't happen.” I shook my head. “You can't let that happen” I started to sob again. “I will try my best, Daisy.” She assured me.”You know I always will.” “You just—” My words were cut short by the opening of the door. Six officers marched into the tiny room, sucking the air out of the space. “Officers,” Anna stood up, shielding me. “I am in the middle of a privileged consultation—” The lead detective stepped forward and slammed a photo onto the metal table. It was Nicholas. His face was unrecognizable.“He’s gone,” the cop said flatly. “Died ten minutes ago.” He looked at Anna, then at me.“We’re done here, Ms. Anna. Your client is a convicted murderer.”
