Luca's Envy

1086 Words
Lia We swayed gently to the rhythm of the band, my feet following Dante’s guide as if I knew by heart the flow of his movements. At that moment I’d forgotten everything about what happened earlier. It was as if time had stopped and nothing mattered. Dante towered over me, flashing gentle smiles occasionally, and my curiosity grew as I realised I didn’t know anything about him, except his first name which didn’t leave much. “Who are you, really?” I calmly asked as he swirled me around and caught me by my waist. He heaved a deep breath, “If you knew who I was, you wouldn’t want to keep dancing with me.” His words were unsettling, rising my curiosity, “Why is that?” I asked softly. “Because people are mostly terrified when they find out who I am.” A part of me hesitated to ask, not wanting to ruin this moment, but I couldn’t help it, I had to know so I asked again, “Who are you?” Dante stared at me intently for some moment, his eyes reluctant, “My name is Dante… Dante Russo.” The name sent a cold shiver down my spine. ‘No,’ I muttered inwardly, and suddenly stopped dancing. ‘You can’t be him.’ The truth is he was right. The name Dante Russo instilled fear in everyone that knew him. He was the ruthless and feared Lycan Mafia King infamous for his strength, influence and dominance across the Mafia and werewolf worlds. However, I could not help but notice the flash of disappointment in his eyes when I stopped. “Is there a problem, Lia?” He asked gently. There was. He was Dante Russo. Even our Lupo Nero pack was no match for his strength, but I shook my head, “No, I’m just in awe. I didn’t think someone like you would fancy small scenes like these.” Dante smiled, “Neither did I think that a wolf as powerful as you would let someone like him disrespect and lord over you.” He lowered his gaze, pointing at Luca at the corner of the hall still flirting with Eve. I shifted my gaze to their direction, anger surging through me again. I could not believe Luca would be so shameless. “You know he doesn’t have to be the alpha of your pack.” Immediately those words fell, I shifted my gaze to him, curiosity riddled my expression. “What do you mean?” Dante’s expression suddenly became serious, “I can help you Lia. I’ve spent barely an hour with you and already I can tell that you are the true power of your pack. If you were to become the alpha of your pack, we could form an alliance and I can help make sure that nobody challenges your authority, not even that buffoon.” He said, and wrapped his arm around my waist, waltzing me around again. Dante’s words left me with enough to think about. He was right about one thing. I could not let Luca become the official alpha and leader of our pack, but I also could not help but wonder why Dante was making this offer. What was in it for him? As we danced, I suddenly felt his hand on the back of my dress fondling with my zipper. I looked up at him, but his eyes remained ever so gentle, staring at me directly. “Your zipper’s bad. Let me help you fix it.” He said kindly, his fingers tracing my back in a composed and careful manner, sending sparks to my body. Right at this moment, I could spot Luca from the corner of my eye, storming towards us. His face was red from anger, vein popping on his forehead like any time now he could explode. “I’m sorry about this,” I muttered under my breath, knowing Luca was going to try and cause a scene. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” He sneered, dragging me furiously away from Dante. I could see Dante’s fist clenched as he leaned forward and knew that this was going to escalate quickly. I held my hand out, “Please don’t… I can take care of this myself.” Slowly, Dante unclenched his fist, staring at me with an edgy look. “Are you trying to embarrass me?” Luca glowered. I turned to him, my face filled with exhaustion, “I’m just dancing Luca, that shouldn’t be a problem considering you’re too busy with Eve over there.” I replied, my voice dripping with sarcasm. Luca became enraged and grabbed my arm forcefully, dragging me away despite my protests. He took me to the back of the hall, shoving me forcibly, his eyes red hot with anger. “You think you can make me jealous with him?” He growled, pacing around, then suddenly stopped in front of me. “You’re nothing Lia! Without me and my leadership, this pack that you love so much is nothing, but if you keep trying to put your nose in my business and piss me off, I’m going to make Eve my Luna and soon after that, you’ll be banished just like your father did to your weak treacherous mother.” The whole time Luca spoke, I’d been quiet, deciding at that moment that I was going to do whatever I had to, to make sure he wasn’t the alpha of our pack. But as he mentioned my mother, I could no longer hold my anger, “Why don’t you admit the truth Luca?” I snapped, my voice filled with authority. “You won’t make Eve your Luna because you know you need me.” A soft chuckle suddenly escaped my lips, “Do you honestly think that you’re the one running the pack?! I handle all the affairs and paperworks. Every major thing that has to do with the pack is under my name. You’re just some poster boy who has gotten too big for his ego.” I replied bitterly. Luca seemed like he was going to boil over with anger at this time, and without hesitation he raised his hand to strike me, but then his hand caught mid-air, held back by a strong grip and pushed away with ease, causing Luca to stumble backwards. I looked up and fear surged through my body. This was going to be bad. Dante was here.
