No More Wedding

Lia “What kind of Alpha hits his Luna?” Dante glowered, stepping in front of me. For a moment, my heart fluttered seeing how quickly he had jumped to my rescue. Luca on the other hand had a sheepish look on his face, almost as if Dante had shown him how truly miserable and low he was. “I’m her alpha!” He shouted, clenching his fist, “She has to learn her place and know there are consequences for disrespecting me!” “Disrespecting you?!” Dante roared, his voice echoing so loudly, Luca trembled and took a step backward. “You are the one here messing with that bimbo and yet you want to talk about respect.” He added, his eyes narrowing in a way that would frighten anyone. Luca took another step backward, creating a distance between him and Dante. Somehow he could tell that with the man’s height and heavy build, he would be no match for him. Also he knew better than to pick a fight here tonight. If he still wanted the support of the council elders, he’d have to check himself. He stood quietly for a while, staring at us disdainfully, then hissed and walked away. “You know, I didn’t need you to save me. I had it under control.” “Huh, sure didn’t look that way.” Dante replied with a smug smile. I heaved a deep sigh. I hate to admit it, but he was right. This was blowing out of proportion too quickly, and I knew that if I didn’t want to keep being under Luca’s control, I’d have to act fast. I needed to act now, before the council of elders would appoint him as our pack’s Alpha. With that, I knew what I had to do. “I’m sorry about him, but you should know I wasn’t trying to make him jealous with you.” I said, lowering my gaze to the ground. Dante remained quiet for a while, and then leaned toward me, whispering into my ear, “I don’t mind. That asshole doesn’t deserve you.” ‘What was that?’ My mind froze, trying to process Dante’s words. Was the Lycan King flirting with me? I quickly shook my head, dismissing the thoughts. If I was going to work with Dante, I couldn’t afford to have any emotional entanglement with him, so I spoke quickly, trying to change the topic, “Let’s do it.” Dante stared at me, perplexed, but before he could respond, I quickly interjected, “I will make an alliance with you, if you can guarantee that you will back me and help me become the true alpha of my pack.” Dante smiled as if he had been waiting to hear those words all evening, “I’ll do it. But what’s in it for me?” I was a bit surprised by his question. He was the one that came to me with this idea, certainly there had to be something in it for him before he suggested it. “What do you want?” I asked. Dante pressed his hand against his cheek, then raised his gaze, “I believe an alliance with the Alpha of the Lupo Nero pack is already enough for now. But keep in mind, I will ask you for something else in the future, and you will have to say yes.” Something didn’t sound right about the way he spoke those words, but right now I was willing to do anything just to make sure Luca did not become the alpha of our pack, even if that meant making a deal with the ruthless Dante Russo. Without giving it much thought, I extended my hand for a shake. Dante stared at it for a moment, a thin line parting his lips and then shook my hand, “I guess we have a deal then.” His eyes drifted to my arm, noticing the bruised marks from Luca’s grip and without asking, he quickly let go and pulled off his jacket, draping it over my shoulder. I had to admit, I was puzzled by his actions. Standing next to him now, Dante was far from the cold, ruthless man I’d heard about. He was kind, protective and gentle. At that point, I could not help but wonder if he was only kind to me, or were everyone else wrong about him. We stood in awkward silence for some moment, and just when I was about to break the tension in the air, his phone chimed. He pulled it out quickly, glanced at the screen and then lifted his gaze to me, “I have to go.” I looked at him curiously, not sure if I really wanted him to leave, but I could not afford to show any emotion or anything that might hint towards something that I didn’t want to believe was there, so I nodded in response. “You can keep the jacket.” He said, and turned to leave, but then suddenly stopped mid-strife as if he had remembered something. “Your father was wrong, Lia, but he is still a man I respect. You can right his mistakes, and lead your pack to be stronger than anything he could have imagined.” He said and immediately walked away before I could get a chance to ask anything. I remained frozen in place after he left, wondering how he knew about my father, but the more I thought about it, the more confused I was. I heaved a sigh and decided to head back to the party, but as I turned the corner, I felt a strong grip on my arm and before I could react, I was shoved to the ground. Luca towered above me, eyes filled with rage as he approached me. “What the hell-“, I started, scrambling to my feet, but before I could finish, he grabbed me again, violently slamming me face towards the wall, “If you think that you can just embarrass me in front of pretty boy and get away with it, think again.” He snarled, pressing me harder against the wall. My arm twisted painfully and I tried to push him off, but he was too strong. But just as I braced myself for a blow, Luca fell with a loud thud but before I could process what had happened, he was already back on his feet, growling, his fangs and claws extended. I turned around quickly and saw my bodyguard, Julian standing beside me with a raging look on his face. He looked ready to fight, and I quickly stepped in, stopping him. Defying his Alpha would only get him banished. “No, Julian.” I said, holding him back. At this point, there was nothing to think over anymore. Luca and I were done. In a few hours, I was going to inform the entire pack and the council that our wedding was cancelled. With that, I took one last look at Luca and shook my head in disappointment. “There’s no need to fight. Let’s just get out of here.” I said, and walked away.
