Chapter 4:The Bloodmoon Court

The gravity of Kade’s declaration hung in the dimly lit hallway, thick and suffocating. Sanity’s anchor. I stared into the dark, fathomless brown of his eyes, my pulse hammering wildly against his thumb, which still rested lightly on my throat. He didn't just want me. He needed me to survive his own mind. For a rogue who had spent five years relying on absolute independence, being the sole lifeline for a feral warlord was a terrifying reality. Kade slowly lowered his hand, though the heavy, possessive weight of his gaze never left my face. "Get dressed," he commanded softly, the dark timber of his voice leaving no room for argument. He gestured toward a heavy oak door across the hall. "There are fresh clothes in the adjoining room. Put them on, and then come downstairs. My pack needs to see you." He didn't wait for my response. He turned and walked silently down the corridor, dissolving into the shadows as seamlessly as he had appeared. I stood frozen for a long moment, the ghost of his touch still burning against my skin. My inner wolf let out a soft, compliant whine, eager to follow the Alpha's order. I clamped down on her instantly. We are surviving, not submitting, I reminded her fiercely. I limped into the adjoining room. It was a massive walk-in closet, stocked with rows of immaculate, dark clothing. Resting on a velvet bench in the center was a neatly folded pile of garments in my exact size: a pair of black tactical cargo pants, a heavy grey knit sweater, and a fresh pair of combat boots. As I pulled the sweater over my head, the scent of dark cedar washed over me again. The clothes hadn't just been provided; they had been deliberately rubbed down with Kade’s scent. He was marking me. He was making sure that every single wolf in this compound knew exactly who I belonged to before I even stepped foot in the room. My silver-laced wound throbbed as I laced up the boots, but the pack healer’s work was exceptional. The shifter healing factor was already knitting the muscle back together. I could walk, and if necessary, I could fight. I took a deep breath, steeling my spine, and walked out of the penthouse. The descent into the main compound was a masterclass in intimidation. The Bloodmoon packhouse was a fortress carved from stone and steel. The grand staircase spiraled down into a massive, cavernous great hall that looked more like a military command center than a living space. As my boots hit the ground floor, the ambient noise of the room instantly died. There were at least fifty wolves in the great hall—heavily muscled warriors, strategists pouring over tactical maps, and guards stationed at every exit. The moment they caught my scent, fifty pairs of eyes snapped toward me. The hostility was instantaneous. I was a rogue. To pack wolves, rogues were unpredictable, untrustworthy scavengers. Several wolves along the perimeter bared their teeth, low growls vibrating in their throats as their territorial instincts flared. But then, the secondary scent hit them. The overwhelming, suffocating aroma of their True Alpha, completely saturated into my clothes and my skin. The reaction was immediate and absolute. The growls snapped shut. Every single warrior in the room averted their eyes, their heads bowing, exposing their throats in a universal display of submission. They weren't submitting to me. They were submitting to the invisible, terrifying shadow of the man standing beside me. Kade had materialized at the base of the stairs. He didn't speak a word, but the sheer volume of his Alpha aura flooded the room, an iron-fisted reminder of his absolute dominance. "Alpha." A massive, heavily scarred man stepped out of the crowd. He was nearly as tall as Kade, built like a battering ram, with a tactical knife strapped to his thigh and a brutal, calculating intelligence in his grey eyes. This was the man Kade had warned me about. The Beta with the thick skull. "Jax," Kade acknowledged, his voice a low rumble that echoed off the stone walls. Jax stopped ten feet away, his gaze flicking toward me before immediately dropping back to Kade’s chin out of respect. "Border patrols reported a breach from Obsidian Ridge last night. We tracked the silver residue to the riverbank. We assumed the rogue was neutralized." "The rogue," Kade said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal, razor-sharp edge, "is my mate." A collective, silent shockwave ripped through the great hall. The Beta’s head snapped up, his grey eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he looked from Kade to me. "A rogue?" A voice sneered from the back of the room. It belonged to a tall, striking female wolf with icy blonde hair and a furious, territorial glare. "You expect us to bow to a nameless stray just because the bond snapped? She doesn't even know pack law." The temperature in the great hall plummeted below freezing. Kade didn't shout. He didn't even move fast. He simply turned his head toward the blonde female. The brilliant, terrifying amber fire ignited in his eyes, instantly swallowing the dark brown. A demonic, dual-toned snarl tore from his throat, a sound so violently feral that several heavily armed warriors literally dropped to their knees, clutching their ears. "Her name is Rowan," Kade roared, the sheer force of his True Alpha command forcing the blonde female to her knees, her face slamming against the stone floor in forced submission. "And she is your Luna. The next wolf who questions her place in this pack will lose their tongue." The great hall fell into a dead, terrified silence. No one breathed. No one moved. I stood paralyzed on the bottom step. I had spent years thinking I was a solitary predator, answering to no one. But as Kade turned his glowing amber eyes back to me, the ferocious, unyielding devotion burning in his gaze completely shattered my defenses. I wasn't just trapped in a heavily guarded fortress. I was trapped by a king who would gladly burn his own court to the ground if they dared to disrespect me.
