LEAVING THE CLEARING, Case, Fader, and Rani plunged once more into the dark jungle, following the path that now seemed headed for the black pyramid. Overhead, the foliage again blocked the huge structure from view, but whenever it thinned for a space, the pyramid still lay ahead, looming higher and closer each time. Closer but still far away. How far, Case couldn’t tell. It seemed they’d been walking for hours. No sound of bird or animal came from the surrounding jungle, and its brooding presence swallowed any conversation. Their journey was silent, except for Rani’s moaning every time her bare feet found a stone or root. “So how’d you recognize us?” Case asked, deciding she preferred the woman’s talking over her whining. “You said you didn’t care.” “Still don’t, actually,” Case mutter
