Beroald took a branch to the left. The passage they’d been following had been fairly level, but this one sloped upward. They reached the foot of an unlit stone stairway spiraling still higher. Taking a burning torch from a wall sconce, Beroald began to climb. The stairway was narrow, allowing only two people at a time.
