Chapter 5: The Masquerade of Masks

361 Words
Crestwood’s annual masquerade was not just a party—it was a power play. It was where alliances were formed, reputations made or shattered, and secrets whispered behind elegant masks. For the elite, it was a tradition of opulence. For Nora, it felt like a trap dressed in silk. The moment she opened the invitation, she knew something was off. Why her? Why now? She wasn’t one of them. But someone had gone out of their way to ensure she’d be there. Zane warned her not to go. “They’re setting you up, Nora. I can feel it.” “But if I don’t show up, they’ll win anyway,” she said. “I’m not going to let them push me into hiding.” So, against her better judgment, she stood in front of the mirror that Friday evening, wearing a midnight-blue dress borrowed from Zane’s cousin. It was simple, flowing, and the only thing that fit. She pinned her hair into soft waves and slipped on the silver mask that covered just enough to make her feel braver than she really was. When she walked into the ballroom, the air seemed to shift. Chandeliers hung like floating galaxies above her. Velvet and satin brushed past as girls twirled in designer gowns, boys in tailored tuxedos standing like statues of old money. And then there was Nora—unapologetically radiant in borrowed elegance. Julian saw her the moment she stepped in. His breath caught. She looked ethereal. Untouchable. But she wasn’t supposed to be there. Not in his world. Before he could reach her, Serena appeared by his side, her crimson gown catching the light like fire. Her mask sparkled—but her eyes, behind it, were icy daggers aimed straight at Nora. Still, Nora stood tall. She danced with Zane first. Then Julian. She smiled through the tension, through the whispers and jealous stares. But later that night, as she stepped outside for air, someone slipped a note into her clutch. “You were never meant to wear that mask. We know who you really are.” And in that moment, Nora realized— The masquerade had only just begun.
