Chapter 2 :The Challenge

1604 Words
By the beginning of the new semester, Elle had one goal: stay on top. She had finished the previous semester as the highest-ranking student in their year, but she knew better than to celebrate for too long. Adrian Cole had already made it clear that he intended to take the position from her, and Elle had no intention of making it easy. Their rivalry had always worked that way. One of them reached the top, and the other immediately started looking for a way to knock them down. This semester, Elle happened to be the one everyone was trying to beat. Especially Adrian. “You're doing it again.” Elle looked up from her laptop. “Doing what?” Sofi Bennett dropped into the chair across from her at the campus café and placed two iced coffees on the table. “That thing where you stare at your grades like they're about to reveal the secrets of the universe.” Elle closed her laptop. “I'm reviewing last semester.” “You've been reviewing last semester for three weeks.” “I want to know where I lost points.” Sofi pushed one of the coffees toward her. “You finished first overall.” “I know.” “You beat Adrian.” “I know.” “You should be celebrating.” “I am.” Sofi stared at her. “You're literally studying.” Before Elle could answer, Claire Santos and Mia Navarro joined them. Claire placed her bag beside the table while Mia pulled out a chair. “Please tell me we're not talking about grades again,” Claire said. “We are,” Sofi replied. Claire groaned. “I knew I should've stayed home.” Mia laughed. “You say that every time, but you always come back.” “Because somebody has to keep Elle from turning into a robot.” Elle rolled her eyes. “I'm sitting right here.” “We know,” Claire said. “That's why we're saying it.” The four girls had been close since their first year. Sofi was outspoken and protective, Claire was practical and organized, while Mia was the most sociable and spontaneous of the group. They were different from one another, but they balanced each other perfectly. More importantly, they were the people Elle trusted enough to see her outside the carefully controlled image she showed everyone else. Sofi leaned forward. “So, what's the plan?” Elle frowned. “What plan?” “For Adrian.” “There is no plan for Adrian.” Mia laughed. “That's a lie.” Elle gave her a look. Mia raised her hands. “I'm just saying.” Claire opened her notebook. “You know he's going to challenge you again this semester.” “Good.” Sofi smiled. “There she is.” Elle took a sip of her coffee. “I don't mind competition.” “That is because you're terrifying when you compete,” Claire said. “I'll take that as a compliment.” “It wasn't.” The girls laughed, and for a moment, Elle relaxed. Then a familiar voice came from behind them. “Well, Reyes.” Elle closed her eyes briefly. She didn't have to turn around. Adrian stood behind their table with his usual group: Jason Miller, his loud and easygoing roommate; Nathan Cruz, the quiet and observant one; and Liam Parker, a confident business student who had become one of Adrian's closest friends. Adrian's eyes went straight to Elle. “Still studying?” Elle looked at him. “Still losing?” Jason immediately laughed. “And we're off.” Sofi shook her head. “Why does he always sound like he's announcing a wrestling match?” “Because everything is a competition to him,” Nathan said. Jason pointed at him. “You're literally Adrian's friend.” “I said everything.” Liam laughed as he pulled out a chair. Adrian sat beside him, still watching Elle. “I was wondering how long it would take before you started preparing for our next competition.” Elle leaned back. “I'm not preparing for you.” “Of course not.” “I'm preparing for the semester.” “Which happens to include me.” “Unfortunately.” Mia laughed. “You two are exhausting.” “You're just jealous,” Adrian said. “Of what?” Mia asked. “The chemistry.” The table went silent. Elle stared at him. Adrian kept a straight face for a second before adding, “Academic chemistry.” Jason burst out laughing. Sofi kicked Elle lightly under the table before she could respond. Elle ignored her. “Don't flatter yourself, Cole.” Adrian smiled. “Wouldn't dream of it.” That afternoon, Professor Harrison gave them something new to compete over. The **National Business Case Challenge** was one of the university's most prestigious competitions. The winning team would receive a scholarship, an internship opportunity with a leading consulting firm, and a recommendation from the university. Professor Harrison stood at the front of the lecture hall and explained the rules. “This year, we have three finalist teams instead of two. Each team will have four members. You will be given the same real-world business problem and forty-eight hours to develop a strategy, financial model, and presentation for a panel of executives.” The room immediately became more interested. “Three teams?” someone whispered. Professor Harrison nodded. “Three. And I have personally selected the team leaders.” Elle straightened in her seat. “Elliana Reyes.” Applause filled the room. She nodded politely. “Adrian Cole.” The room erupted in laughter and cheers. Adrian leaned back in his chair and looked directly at her. Then Professor Harrison announced the final name. “Ethan Blake.” The room became quieter. Elle turned toward the unfamiliar student sitting two rows behind her. Ethan Blake stood slowly, accepting the attention without looking particularly impressed by it. He was tall, well-dressed, and carried himself with a quiet confidence that reminded Elle of Adrian, except there was something different about him. Adrian enjoyed provoking people. Ethan seemed to study them. His eyes met hers. He gave her a brief nod. Elle returned it. Adrian, however, wasn't looking at Elle anymore. He was looking at Ethan. After class, the three team leaders were called to Professor Harrison's office. “The competition will be judged on strategy, financial viability, presentation, and innovation,” Professor Harrison explained. “I don't want three teams producing the same safe solution. Take risks, but make sure you can defend them.” Ethan glanced at Elle. “Sounds interesting.” “It will be,” she replied. Adrian leaned against the wall. “Assuming you can keep up.” Ethan looked at him. “I'm not worried.” Adrian's expression changed slightly. Elle noticed. “So,” Ethan said, looking between them, “you two are the famous rivals.” “We're not famous,” Elle said. “You are on campus,” Ethan replied. Adrian smirked. “Don't believe everything you hear.” Ethan smiled. “I don't.” For some reason, that answer bothered Adrian. The teams were finalized by Friday. **Team Reyes:** Elle Reyes, Sofia Bennett, Claire Santos, and Mia Navarro. **Team Cole:** Adrian Cole, Jason Miller, Nathan Cruz, and Liam Parker. **Team Blake:** Ethan Blake, Ryan Mitchell, Lucas Bennett, and Ava Morgan. The rivalry had officially become a three-way battle. The competition began the following Thursday. All three teams received the same case: a struggling retail company facing declining sales, rising operating costs, and increasing competition from digital businesses. Elle immediately took control of her team's table. “We need to focus on three areas: customer retention, cost reduction, and digital expansion.” Claire began organizing the financial data while Mia worked on the market analysis. Sofi focused on the presentation and branding strategy. Across the room, Adrian's team was already working. So was Ethan's. For the next two days, the three teams barely slept. There were arguments, revisions, endless calculations, coffee runs, and moments when everyone questioned whether the competition was worth it. Late Friday night, Elle stood to get another cup of coffee. As she passed Ethan's table, he looked up. “You're still working.” “So are you.” He glanced at her notes. “Your strategy is conservative.” Elle raised an eyebrow. “You read my notes?” “Only the part you left visible.” “And?” “I think you can do better.” She crossed her arms. “That's a bold opinion from someone I barely know.” “Then prove me wrong.” Elle studied him. There was no teasing in his voice. He genuinely wanted to see what she could do. “I intend to,” she said. Ethan smiled. “Good.” As Elle walked away, she noticed Adrian watching from across the room. His expression was unreadable. Sofi noticed too. “Interesting.” Elle looked at her. “What?” “Nothing.” “Don't start.” Sofi smiled and returned to her laptop. The presentations were scheduled for Saturday morning. Elle's team would present first, followed by Adrian's, then Ethan's. As Elle stood backstage with her team, she looked across the room. Adrian was already watching her. Then Ethan glanced in her direction. For the first time, Elle realized something. This wasn't just about beating Adrian anymore. There were now three people fighting for the same victory. And Elle intended to be the one standing at the top.
