Carli hugged Sam. She had hoped that they could visit longer, but understood Shaun’s need to do what he could to protect his sisters, including his belief that Sam’s safety would be ensured at the ranch. “We’ll need to meet and go over the rest of the paperwork that Max Stevens has for us,” Carli said to fill the space and keep the emotions of loss away. “Yes, of course, but we should wait until all this…” Sam waved vaguely, unsure how to address the shooting, the fire, and the darkroom chemicals, “is, well, you know,” and Carli nodded. “I have the guest book, so I’ll send thank you notes. I may have to call or e-mail you and Shaun since I wasn’t able to meet everyone…” she sighed and realized that she was rambling to delay leaving.
