THE DRAWN LINE

Jane just returned from work at about six thirty am from the hospital where she works. Been fagged and sweaty went straight to the shower and then to bed, not noticing the piece of paper that was on the kitchen table . After about five hours, she woke up from sleep and went to the kitchen to prepare some baked bread for her herself and a cup of coffee, she then noticed the piece of paper that was on the kitchen table she picked it up and read it. The paper stated " hello Jane, please I will be out of town for a week for an important engagement see you soon" hmm, this is not your first time and I know it will not

be the last , you own your life so you can do as you like,she exclaimed. She left the paper on the table and picked her food and ate. She was still on the table when her phone reminder reminded her of her dinner with a family friend Down town by four o'clock pm. She stood up from the table went inside the room to get prepared because from there she will be returning to work she is still on night duty.

She left the house at about quarter to four o'clock,she knocked up the house and drove down to her friend's house about twenty five minutes drive from her house . She drove straight to their car park, parked and alighted from her car and made her way to their living room. She pressed the door bell, the voice from inside asked," who is there? " She answered, is me, Jane! The voice inside streamed " it is aunty Jane! " as she opened the door she hued her as if she has not seen her in a long while. Petty! " where is you mum? "Jane asked . She is in the kitchen preparing dinner and everyone else upstairs watching TV, petty replied. She went straight to the kitchen where she atmosphere was saturated with spicy and delicious aroma of delicacy. Hi! Deborah altered, Hi! Jane quiese. Deborah was distracted abite with what she was preparing and for a moment she was not talking to her . Hem! What's up! How is work? Deborah query. Work is fine ! Jane jeered .And what about that stuff we discussed Deborah asked, which of them , Jane requested. The clothe at the plaza, ok, that will be next week, Jane replied. What of Derick,is he at home or work? Deborah asked. Derick!! Jane jeered, I don't know his where about. I met a note on the table telling me he will not be around for one week ,his destination he did not tell, so am not bordered about him. And this will not be his first disappearance, this actually is his third time. Jane concluded . Is it from the office or with his friends? Have called Johnson and Jerry to ask them of his where about? Deborah requested. No! That will not happened again they are always clueless of his where about. So am not going to border them and I know there are things they too are hiding and that is not my headache.when I left for work yesterday afternoon I went to his office I was told he was in a meeting with the board of directors and I left a message for him that he should check me at work after his meeting but he did not do that, only for me to get home and discovered he has left a note for me . That has been his behavior of recent.

When I met him five years ago, he was a down to earth young man handsome, caring, diligent, loving and a desire of every woman. He was at the top of his career, a top management executive. He was a humble fellow not arrogant for any reason. I met him on my way to the airport and that is where everything started, as you know.He makes me a complete woman. I cannot stop thinking about him when we first started, he gave me everything, he was emotionally present, his gifts , protection and his love. He is my great Romeo! All my friends are always fascinated by him they can't stop talking about him and I also make sure I protected him from them, I didn't expose him too much before them. His emotional poking can make any woman crazy. I was just settling down to begin to enjoy him the more before all these sudden change in his properness and this is what breaks my heart ,she was still expressing her bewilderment when suddenly she was interrupted by Jerome, the husband of Deborah . So you ladies will not make this edible come alive on time, we are hungry!

Jerome interrupted. As he exchanged greetings with Jane. It is ready Just to set the dinning, Deborah emphasized. In a jiffy the delicacy was ready and everyone was at the table.

At the dinning were Mr and Mrs Jerome with their two children and a friend of the family, Jane.

Jane , I was expecting to see Derick here too this evening what happened to him, Jerome query. Yes! That was the initial plan before things changed, he went out of town since yesterday evening to come back in a week's time, Jane answered. " Work palaver or what? " Jerome intensified. "

palaver or what? " Jerome intensified. " All of the above because I didn't know " Jane exclaimed. "Can we please concentrate on the food we are eating or ? " Interrupted Deborah. After a brief moment of silence." Aunty Jane! hope you did not forget your promise " , petty reminded. " What promise? I have forgotten can you please remind me", Jane requested. " You promised to be present during my team competition next week Saturday, our Handball competition final matches" , Petty reminded. That one, I didn't forget I will surely be there, your mummy and myself will be there, you don't have to worry" , Jane concluded Deborah's phone rings," hello! lady what's up ? " From the caller. "Hi! Katherine, goodness! Where are you ?" " Am out of town on a date will be back in a few days" , Katherine replied. " On a date with who? Your guy or who? " Deborah demanded.That should not be your concern just a date, she continued ,the reason I called is to tell you that I have sent the money I borrowed from you back to your account, greet your family bye" , ok! Thank you! Bye" , Deborah replied, call dropped! " Is Katherine not around I planned visiting her after work tomorrow" , Jane asked. She said she has a date and will not be around for a few days, Deborah answered."On a date? Where is her husband? She is always like this , rubbing Peter to pay Paul . I thought she has changed, in the last few years she has not been doing it until this am hearing ", Jane jeered. "Notwithstanding she has her life to live. I just hope she is not doing the wrong thing because this is how she used to start. Though, the husband has not been complaining of any ills about her, so let keep our fingers crossed" , Deborah concluded. "I really enjoyed the food, thank you for inviting me. I have to start going to work now, am on night shift" , Jane explained. "Thank you for coming ,we always enjoy your company, pretty soon we will come to have dinner in your house too, as soon as your husband returned, so start preparing now",Jerome mentioned. "Ok! That will be nice, I will start working on that. Also you know it is because of my work I must always be on ground at the hospital, either morning , afternoon or night, except am on leave. But not to worry I will work on it this time", Jane reiterated. "Extend my greeting to your husband when he comes back" , Jerome concluded. The family escorted her to the car park and she drove out, see you soon! They exchanged greetings.

She drove straight to the hospital where she works as a doctor, so many thoughts flashes through her mind with the recent development. It is really putting a doubt in her mind not knowing where her fate leads her, yet she is hoping that once they discuss things will go back to normal . She drove into gas station to get some gas but fortunately she met an old friend of hers from the high school and former admirer, Johnny. They both packed opposite each other at the station but were not spry at recognizing each other until Johnny wanted to navigate a bend at the station and unknowingly his car hit hers. Johnny rushed down to go and apologize for the unfortunate incident. Jane was apt to sport him first when he was trying to apologize for what happened, "Johnny Bay! " She called. Johnny looking critically but still quick to recognize. "Wao! Janey cay! " They hugged each other. " what a decade! Where have you been? You just disappeared from the planet suddenly" , Johnny exclaimed. " Ah! Ah! Disappeared from the planet, what a irony! I have been around only that our path did not cross", Jane intervened . They both moved their cars to the other side of the station. "I looked for you everywhere but to no avail , through social Media but no result. But here you are in my presence" , Johnny echoes, he hugged her once again. Where are you up to? Johnny query . I am going to work, am one of the doctors at the Medic hospital, Jane said . Ok!, Johnny admitted." See Johnny, I must resume work by eight pm and is already twenty minutes to the time. Please let me start going we will talk some more other time. Let me give you my phone number and for the car I will fix it when am less busy ", Jane said. They exchanged numbers and she entered her car and zoomed off . The memory of Johnny came back fresh to her, she sighed deeply, some many things re happening rapidly. Johnny is nice guy though young at that time ,Jane claimed. She tried to clear her mind from all distractions because of her work, she needed hundred percent concentration to be able to attend to patients and people alike . She finally drove into the hospital compound at eight o'clock. She took the things she brought from the house and straight to the reception she signed in and straight to her office. After settling down for some few minutes,she was called to attend to a patient who has been waiting for her.

A fifty years old woman who has been on admission for close to a month now. When she was brought in she was unconscious but after two weeks of treatment she regained her consciousness under the watchful eyes of Doctor Jane. She has improved tremendously and so she is always on her case and every development is reported to her. She walks straight into Mrs Andrews' s room. "Good evening madam , how are you doing this evening", Jane asked. "Doctor! Is good to see you this evening, everything is fine ,all thanks to you" , Mrs Andrews reacted. "All the glory to God for everything , hope you have received dinner and drugs", she query . "Yes! the nurse on duty has given me and am feeling much better now" , Mrs Andrews concluded. Doctor Jane examined her for a moment, thereafter she opened the file in her hand noted something down. "Hello doctor! Hope am better now?" Mrs Andrews asked. "Yes! you are getting better", Doctor Jane answered. "Also doctor are you going to be busy after now, I will like to have a word with you" , Mrs Andrews requested. "I still have to attend to two patients after then I will come to see you" , Jane concluded. She left the room immediately as she shut the door behind her, she met two nurses at the corridor running down stairs that indicate there is an emergency and need quick attention. She asked them of what happened she was told that two people were rushed from the scene of an accident and needed immediate attention. She moved down to other two patients's room she needed to attend to, one of them had emotional break down which has resulted into stroke at the severe stage and can't move any part of her body when she was brought in but now there as been improvement some of her fingers are beginning to move gradually. Good evening! Madam! Hope you are better today? Doctor Jane asked. Even though she can't talk but made sign with her fingers. She examined her and noted something down. And move to the next patient on her list, he is a man who was drunk and drive, and so he had an accident and broke his neck. After he had achieved a great degree in his profession. His case is till under serious examination. Many surgeries have been conducted but still at the same spot ,it is not certain whether he will be able to use his back again. It is most likely he will be paralyzed, she examined him as well and took a paramount attention on some critical aspects of his improvement.

Eventually she rounded up with the patients on her list for the moment, and there and then was she able to return to Mrs Andrews to attend to her request of wanting to see her. "Hi! Mrs Andrews am back" , Jane said. Thank you, please have your seat. " Doctor Jane ,when you first came in this evening the expression on your face pointed to one thing, challenges at home. You know I don't know much about you ,but no matter the issue always make sure it does not take away you sanity because challenges will always come, we must make sure we are boss over them and not the other way. The issue of challenges in marriage cannot be over emphasized. The strategies and ways out should be our main concern and not to be weigh down by them. Please! my daughter, brace up and take your life into your hands and draw the line, it is only tough people that last not tough time", Mrs Andrews concluded." Thank you ma'am, l have a little issue with my husband, a sudden change of character and disposition, and unconcerned gesture and nullness to things and is giving me headache. When I got home this morning he left a note on the table telling me that he has gone out of town to be back in one week and this will not be the first or second time he will be going out without worrying about anything else and when he comes come back, no explanation", Jane narrated. " You have to draw the line, the extent to which you want to be hurt and take back your life, don't wait until it goes worse. Have a talk with him and try to know the issue, you should wake up from your fantasy land, this is life. Put your nose to the ground and don't be perturbed with whatever the outcome maybe ", Mrs Andrews emphasized. There was a knock on the door of the room,a nurse came in. Doctor Jane, your attention is needed urgently, the nurse concluded.

CHAPTER TWO

THE CASTIGATION

Jane just closed from work at about four o'clock pm on Friday and was heading home but decided to branched the store to pick up one or two items. After she has selected what she needed, getting to the cashier she met one of the staff of Derick at the table standing to pay for what she also has bought. Hello! Madam,how are you doing? She asked. Am fine, replied Jane. Am on my way home I just dropped by to get some needed things,she said . That is good for the ladies, Jane mentioned. And not to forget Mr Derick gave me a paper to prepare for this afternoon, and even told me it was urgent but later when I got to his office has gone, please can you help me drop it for him at home, she requested. Why not ! I will, Jane stated . She hand over the paper to her and the two left the store together but later headed their different ways. Jane drove straight home to get some needed rest but while on the way the thought of what just happened in the store flashes through her mind .so this man is always going to work but refused to come home telling me lies that he is out of town, but what is the way out for me now? She muttered . Getting home exhausted with all the crazy situation happening around her lately. She prepared what to eat and later went to lay down her head to get some sleep, this was around eight o'clock pm.

It was the alarm that woke her up by five o'clock am the second day with a scorching headache, still trying to overcome the drowsiness she manage to put off the alarm. Her head was as heavy as someone carrying the whole world on her head, she manages put off the alarm and went to the bathroom to put some water on her head. The sleep has cleared away but still feel the scorching headache, she manage to clear her mind and get something else to think of , but it was difficult to do, she muttered some word in silence, she didn't realize when drop of tears dropped from her eyes and followed by a gush, she made her way to the bathroom and cried uncontrollable until the last drop was shed. She was interrupted by the door bell sound, she cleared her face and headed to the door. Opening the door she saw her neighbor standing she came to call her attention to the smoke coming from her kitchen, she rushed down to put off the gas because she has initially kept something on the gas to prepare breakfast. She came out again to show her appreciation to her. Did you notice your eyes are swollen, the neighbor appointed out. Not really may be because I have just woken up, thanks for your concern anyway, Jane commented. As she was about to close the door Derick drove into the garage,while the neighbor find her way to her house, she shots the door behind her and went straight to the kitchen. Derick entered, what is burning in this house, Derick queries. But there was no answer. He then went into the room to have a shower. After some minutes he came out of the room, Jane was at the dinning table trying to eat something to get her composure and her sanity back . Did you see the paper I dropped on the table, I have some meetings to attend in the next city and your phone was not going through that was why I dropped the note, Derick stated. So your car did not pass in front of my office, that is why you could not stopped by to tell me, Jane reacted. It did not even cross my mind to do that, Derick totted. There is no point trying to deceive yourself, you know what you're doing, only be straight forward, you are becoming too complex for me and am getting irritated by it, Jane emphasized. Who is irritating you? Derick questioned. Jane went to her bag brought out the paper given to her by Derick's colleague, she stretched the piece of paper to him, Mrs parblos asked me to give you this, Jane winkled. How come? Derick asked. We met at the store and she hand it over to me to help give you. Jane jeered. Derick was dumbfounded. But you told me you will be out of town for a week, but here you are in the office, what should I believe now, Jane concluded. I only came to the office on Friday, Derick reiterated. That is a lie, you have been going to the office she told me, are you having another family elsewhere? Derick left the dinning where they were talking to go get some coffee and came back , Jane demanded. Another family I don't understand this question, Derick puzzles

Derick sat across the table facing her, when we first met it was with a great warmness, and it was heaven on earth, I desired your companionship like no other ,you are the dearest of all the fairies,the ocean that swept my heart with no partition, the only light in the mist of the total darkness, the only ink that won't stop working even at the faintness of it. Should I say you have changed or I have changed, Derick expressed . Changed! Did I hear you say changed, which of us has changed , you have left this house in the last two years three times without you informing me. Even this recent one you could have pass the message in a more polite way but you decided to drop a paper for me, instead of you putting a call through or branching my place of work to tell me . That means you are already taking a stand and the message is becoming more clearer to me as per one , Jane concluded. Your work has taken a vital part of your time, you hardly have time for me, everything you talk about is work, we don't spend time together again, there is no more mutual consent as we use to have it before , you left me panting and yearning for congress which you have denied severally , Derick reiterated. This your allegation is actually pointing to something , it is barely three years into our coming together that all this started , there are many times you came into this house late into the night , some you don't return until another day. You never give any explanation to all this, all your complain is that my work has taken me away from you, but there is no day I don't come home, you keep late night and don't behave responsible again. Most time I warm the cushion through the night alone, you have practically taken your bed outside and the comfort there is more convenient for you.

Last month I saw a call from Katherine on your phone but I decided to keep mute concerning that, the reason she was calling you I never know, she is my best friend and the day in question I just left her office and in the middle of the night she was calling you, Jane recalled. Derick was pricked with her statement, but look away as if he did not hear what she said. I discovered a drift in your character after our attendance of the birthday marked by Katherine one and half years ago, since then I have been struggling to catch up with you , hope another woman is not stealing your heart away or has already stolen it. Because am screaming out my heart and on one is responding even the closest pal. That same day after the event myself and Kathy's guy looked for you everywhere, you were no where to be found ,your phone was switched off also, and later we discovered that Katherine also was no where to be found but later she reached out that she needed to attend to a sudden occasion that came up. Myself and Kathy has been friends since childhood and I can't guaranteed her, what she will do or what not, Jane yelled. What are you insinuating that am cheating on you? Derick query. You should answer it yourself, Jane replied. You are saying am cheating with Katherine, I think you should ask her about that, Derick emphasized. See you, you want her to admit it that is what you're saying, keep up with what you are doing it will pay up one day, Jane concluded. I hope you will find what you are seeking and pretty soon, Jane jeered . There after Derick went outside to his car to get his briefcase and he went to the study to get some of the work left undone from the office started, he has been about his work for an hour when the door bell rang, he went to check who was there and it was his friend, Johnson. Hi DDy! But what happened to your phone I have been calling you like for ever, Johnson asked. Sorry it is in the room, I have been busy since I returned and I did not even remember it. Derick replied. What happened that you did not remember the appointment we have with the General Collin, it is already one hour late, Johnson stated. He went inside to change his clothes and returned in a jiffy, Johnson asked after Jane and he said she is fine. Both of them left the house.

They left in Johnson's car and straight to officers' mesh to meet General Collin who welcomed them warmly and treated with all kinds of delicacies, Collin is a childhood friend of Derick and Johnson. They were there till midnight, Johnson asked Collin of the plan for the night and Collin told them that he has make arrangement for the needful, they all chuckled. That reminds me, Jane is beginning to suspect my movement and I don't care only her cannot be milking this treasure alone, it must be shared. She laid a lot of accusations, they were all actually true but I debunked them. She did not know I didn't love her as before, her best friend Katherine is the one on course now, how I wish I had met her before Jane, Maybe I will not be doing like this, he chuckled, and he continued this is even better, to have two of the best women around you I can't be more grateful. But come to think of it Jane is more ambitious and strong, intelligent and adequate but she can't be smarter than me, I will teach her how to do it, Derick emphasized . Furthermore she is doing well in her career , she is next to the gods in her field they barely worship her because of her expertise, though she did not deny me anytime I

I want it but she can't continue to be the only one, Derick concluded . His phone rang , it was Katherine on the line; hello Kathy , where are you now ? Sweetheart am on my way to the hotel, Kathy commented. Ok I will join you soon,Derick replied. Guys , I will not be going with you again I have to leave now ,my babe is waiting in the right place , Derick emphasized. He picked up his keys and left both Johnson and General Collin. He took a taxi down to the hotel where Katherine lounge.

At about two o'clock am in the morning, Derick and Katherine left the hotel and went home. Derick got home at about two thirty am, he decided to use the kitchen door to get entrance in the house because he knows that Jane will not open door for him. After entering he went straight to the room, it was his presence that woke Jane up she picked her things and moved to the next room to continue her sleep. It was the alarm that woke her up at about five o'clock in the morning for her routine work, she manages to stand up and herd straight to the bathroom to wash her face, she engages herself in exercise for about an hour by quarter past six she has already finished her exercise she went to bath and thereafter went to prepare breakfast. She has practically been abandoned by Derick, so her did not bordered herself trying to prepare him food. She is deeply worried and know not what to do, so she decided she will visit her friend Kathy to have a chat with her. Moreover, recently she has noticed that Katherine has been avoiding her, several calls that were not returned. Even sometimes meeting her at the mall, she will take style to ignore her, Jane did not take it to heart neither have negative notion about it. She still believed she is her friend and plan visiting her that Sunday afternoon when she is coming back from place of worship. Furthermore, her concern go deeper concerning her own ends, Derick been nonchalant about the situation, after he came out of the shower he went straight to bed. Jane is always on night shift on Sundays, after she has finished all her chores she left for the worship house around ten o'clock in the morning.

She has already scheduled visiting Katherine after Sunday worship service. She left immediately to Kathy's house but getting there her car was not parked at the usual place, she parked her car at the other side and went straight to the door. She pressed the door bell but it was Edwards that come to meet her, good afternoon! Jane, Edwards said. Good afternoon, Jane replied. Where is everyone? Hope all is well, Jane commented. Yes, all is well! Edwards replied. What of Katherine. Jane asked. She sat down . Katherine is not home she has gone to work, Edwards relays. But she does not always go to work
