The cold did not merely recede where the Ashen marched; it died a violent, screaming death.
In the center of what had, only forty-eight hours ago, been a pristine, thousand-year-old Svelen glacial valley, a monolithic obsidian spire now pierced the bruised sky. It had erupted from the fractured earth, thrust upward by pulsing veins of magma that ran beneath the permafrost like liquid gold. The surrounding air was a choking, heavy soup of sulfur and black soot, so hot that the falling snow vaporized into scalding steam before it could ever touch the ground.
Inside a heavy, spherical cage woven from thick rods of pitted volcanic glass, Queen Althea sank to her knees.
Stripped of her majestic silver-and-white armor and clad only in a torn, soot-stained tunic, the sovereign ruler of the Svelen Empire stared blankly at the floor. The glass bars beneath her pulsed with an internal, suffocating heat, specifically designed to sap her strength and unravel her royal cryomancy before it could manifest. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the suffocating void in her chest.
A deep, rhythmic vibration shook the obsidian courtyard, signaling his arrival.
Malakor stepped through the shimmering heat waves. The Ash King was a towering, monolithic figure encased in pitted obsidian armor that seemed to absorb what little light remained in the north. His skin was a lattice of cooled, black volcanic rock, but through the deep cracks in his flesh, an intense, molten gold fire pulsed in time with his heavy breathing.
Beside him, low to the ground, walked a nightmare.
It was a colossal, lizard-like volcanic dragon, its four massive, clawed feet scraping against the obsidian stone. Its hide was covered in interlocking, fireproof scales, and a pair of massive, leathery wings folded tightly against its heavily muscled back. The beast exhaled softly, and columns of raw, liquid flame leaked from its nostrils, bubbling onto the ground. It was an apex predator of the deep rifts—perfectly adapted to walk the land as a heavy siege beast, or take to the sky to rain ruin from above.
Malakor stopped just inches from the glass bars, looking down at the broken queen.
"Your capital has fallen, Althea," Malakor’s voice rumbled, sounding like the grinding of tectonic plates. "The white gates are melted. The towers of ice are nothing but boiling mud. The Svelen Empire is no more."
Althea’s head snapped up. Her heart fractured completely at his words. "And my daughter...?" she whispered, her voice trembling, desperate for any shred of hope. "Eira..."
"Ash..." He whispered softly with a calculated cruelty, his golden eyes flaring. "Like the rest of your people. The flame consumed her at the border walls."
A devastating, agonizing silence hung in the air. Eira was gone. Her kingdom was gone. Everything she had spent her life protecting had been reduced to soot.
Then, the grief turned into pure, unadulterated fury.
With a raw, screaming cry of absolute rage, Queen Althea surged to her feet. She grabbed the burning bars of the volcanic glass cage, ignoring the horrific scent of her own flesh searing against the heat. She channeled every single ounce of her maternal fury and royal bloodline. A blinding, roaring vortex of absolute frost exploded from her body, a blizzard so violently cold it threatened to snuff out the light of the courtyard.
She slammed the ice magic against the bars, forcing the frost to freeze her way out, desperate to tear Malakor apart with her bare hands.
For a second, the flames around the courtyard flickered. But the volcanic glass bars merely glowed brighter, pulsing with an oppressive, unnatural heat. The ice she created began to hiss violently. It bubbled, turned to scalding steam, and evaporated into gray mist. The magic unraveled, leaving her gasping, her hands blistered and bleeding, collapsing back onto the floor of the cage.
Malakor didn't even flinch. He merely looked down at her and let out a heavy, grinding sigh.
"A futile effort," the Ash King rumbled, turning his back on her. He stroked the snout of his four-legged dragon, the beast leaning into his hand with a low, rumbling purr of flame. "Now that the Svelen are out of the way, the true work begins."
He vaulted seamlessly onto the back of the massive lizard-like beast, settling into a heavy iron saddle. He pulled the reins, and the dragon flared its massive leathery wings, its four claws digging into the stone as it prepared to launch.
"I will go down to the other tribes now," Malakor said, his voice echoing across the smoking valley as his generals brought forward the armies of stone titans. "I will march into the forests of the wolves and the mountains of the bears. I will burn down everything until the snows are forgotten, and the whole world worships the flames!"
With a deafening roar, the dragon unleashed a massive torrent of fire into the gray sky and leaped into the air, its powerful wings catching the hot updrafts.
As the shadow of the Ash King and his flying beast flew west toward the Whispering Taiga, Queen Althea curled into a tight ball on the floor of her cage. She closed her eyes, tears of absolute grief burning down her soot-stained cheeks, entirely unaware that miles away, in the deep green of the forest, her daughter’s heart was still beating.
