Chapter 1: Ash on the Wind

PROLOGUE In the northernmost reaches of the world, winter was not a season. It was the law. For a thousand years, three bloodlines held the permafrost, divided by pride and blood. The SVELEN ruled from cities of white stone and glacier ice, dominating the skies on colossal Winter Eagles with the disciplined magic of the freeze. In the endless pine forests below ran the VARGARI, nomadic pack-hunters who tracked prey in perfect harmony alongside prehistoric dire wolves. And higher still, upon the Bleak Peaks, stood the URSKAN—stoic wardens of the mountains who lived and died alongside armored cave bears. For generations, they bled each other over hunting grounds and old hatreds, believing the ice was theirs to contest. They were wrong. The night the black ash began to fall from the heavens, the eternal snows did not melt—they hissed. Deep within the earth, an unnatural heat fractured the permafrost, turning pure white drifts into boiling mud and choking soot. Against the burning devastation of The Ash, the frost would have to become one, or perish alone. CHAPTER ONE The wind at the edge of the world did not blow; it bit. Princess Eira of the Svelen Empire stood at the precipice of the Northern Watchtower, her silver-threaded cloak whipping violently against her white armor. Beneath her, the fortress of Frost-Grave clung to the sheer glacial cliffside like a crown of jagged diamond. It was a masterpiece of Svelen architecture—walls of solid, reinforced glacier ice fused seamlessly with pale stone, built to withstand centuries of sieges and the most brutal winters the north could throw at it. Eira closed her eyes, inhaling the crisp, sub-zero air. She extended a hand, her fingers tracing a slow circle in the gale. Deep within her royal bloodline, the ancient magic stirred. The moisture in the air answered her call, instantly crystallizing into a dozen razor-sharp shards of ice that hovered in a perfect, lethal halo around her palm. With a flick of her wrist, she sent them shattering against a distant snowdrift. A low, resonant trill vibrated through the stone floor. Behind her, her Winter Eagle shifted its massive weight. The beast was colossal, its feathers the color of fresh powder, its beak sharp enough to puncture iron plates. Eira walked over, pressing her forehead against the eagle's crest. "Rest, Zephyr," she murmured. "The border is quiet." But Zephyr didn't rest. The eagle’s golden eyes dilated, and a sharp, panicked screech tore from its throat. It snapped its beak at the sky, its massive wings flaring. Eira frowned, turning back to the northern horizon. The sky was changing. The pristine, pale blue of the Arctic afternoon was bleeding into a sickly, bruised charcoal. At first, she thought it was a localized blizzard. But the clouds were moving too fast, rolling over the distant mountains like a wave of heavy, boiling ink. Then, the snow began to fall. Only, it wasn't white. Gritty, black flakes drifted down from the darkening heavens, dusting the pristine white courtyard below. Eira reached out, catching a single flake on her leather gauntlet. It didn’t melt into a clean drop of water. It hissed. A tiny line of gray smoke rose from the leather, leaving a charred, black speck behind. Ash. "Princess!" a voice shouted from the battlement below. Commander Valeska was sprinting up the stone steps, her face pale beneath her silver helm. "The scouts at the perimeter... they aren't responding. The scrying mirrors are just showing smoke." Before Eira could answer, the earth shuddered. It wasn't a tremor; it was a violent, rhythmic thudding that vibrated through the very marrow of her bones. Far out in the valley, the eternal glaciers—ice that had stood since the dawn of the realm—suddenly fractured. Massive fissures tore through the snow, and a deafening, roaring wall of orange fire and scalding steam erupted into the sky. Through the choking haze, they came. They were not men. They were nightmares sculpted from jagged obsidian rock and crackling, internal magma. The Ashen. They marched in terrifying, synchronized silence, an army of stone titans and burning cinder-drakes that turned the sky into a furnace. "To the walls!" Eira’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding, cutting through the sudden panic of the garrison. "Archers, prepare the frost-tipped ballistas! Light the signal fires for the capital!" "The signal fires won't catch, Your Highness!" Valeska yelled over a sudden, roaring wind. "The air... it’s too hot!" The temperature was rising at a suffocating rate. The crisp, clean air Eira loved was suddenly replaced by the stench of sulfur and choking soot. Sweat broke out beneath her heavy armor. At the front of the invading horde, the air distorted with pure, radiating heat. A monolithic figure clad in pitted, burning iron armor stepped through the steam. She wielded a greatsword that bled liquid fire, and where her face should have been, two hollow sockets of molten gold burned through the darkness. Malakor. The Ash King raised his blade, and the Ashen horde charged. "Fire!" Eira screamed. Massive frost-ballistas unleashed a hail of icy spears into the oncoming ranks. The projectiles struck the stone titans, but the magic didn't hold. The sheer, radiating heat of the monsters shattered the ice before it could pierce their rocky hides. The Lava-Golems hit the lower gates with the force of a collapsing mountain. Eira leaped from the watchtower, channeling every ounce of her royal bloodline. She slammed her hands onto the stone courtyard, unleashing a massive, blinding vortex of frost. A towering wall of absolute ice rose up to plug the shattered gate, freezing the first wave of monsters solid. For a single second, there was silence. Then, Malakor took a step forward. His boot pressed against the permafrost. Instantly, a web of glowing magma veins shot through the snow. The beautiful, reinforced glacier-ice walls of Frost-Grave didn't just break—they wept. The ice liquefied into scalding rivers of mud and boiling water. The grand towers groaned, losing their foundations as the frozen earth beneath them turned to ash. "The fortress is falling!" Valeska screamed, pushing Eira back as a massive block of stone crashed down where she had been standing. The white-clad legions were being cut down, their disciplined lines useless against a foe that melted their armor off their bodies. "No!" Eira cried, her hands glowing with a desperate, failing blue light. "We can hold them!" "Look at the walls, Eira!" Valeska roared, gripping her shoulders. Her own armor was searing to the touch. "There is nothing left to hold! You are the royal bloodline. If you die here, the empire dies with you. Run!" A massive Lava-Golem crashed through the courtyard wall, its burning fist swinging toward them. Valeska drew her blade, throwing herself into the monster's path to buy her a single, fleeting second. "Valeska!" Before she could reach him, a deafening screech echoed from above. Zephyr dived through the choking black smoke, his massive talons gripping Eira’s armored shoulders and lifting her into the air just as the courtyard completely collapsed into a sea of fire. As the giant eagle soared higher into the suffocating sky, Eira looked down. Frost-Grave, the proud, unyielding shield of the Svelen Empire, was gone. In its place was a blackened, smoking crater of mud and ash. Tears tracked through the soot on her face, evaporating almost instantly against the rising heat. Her magic had failed. Her soldiers were gone. The Svelen were not invincible. Zephyr winged hard to the south, aiming for the safety of the capital. But Eira stared at the horizon, watching the wall of fire slowly begin its march toward the heart of her kingdom. If she flew to the capital, she would only be bringing them a slower execution. The Svelen Empire could not survive this alone. Clutching Zephyr’s reins, her knuckles turning white, Eira forced the great bird to veer west. Away from the grand stone cities. Away from everything she knew.
