She Vanished

The heavy front door slammed shut, the sound echoing through the cavernous Kingsley mansion like a gunshot. Ethan Kingsley stood entirely frozen in the foyer as the rain roared outside. Sophia was gone. Truly gone. For several agonizing seconds, he didn't move, breathe, or think. The phone in his hand continued to vibrate aggressively, the name Olivia Calling glowing across the screen. Once, seeing that name would have meant something to him. Tonight, it only brought an intense wave of irritation. He rejected the call. When it immediately rang again, he cut it off with a curse. His dark eyes remained fixed on the empty doorway. Sophia actually left. His jaw tightened in denial. It was impossible. Sophia had loved him unconditionally for five years. She always stayed, no matter how cold his silence or how cruel his words. So why did his chest feel so violently hollow tonight? Why did a dangerous unease start settling deep into his bones? Spurred by a sudden spike of adrenaline, Ethan strode toward the open door. He stepped onto the porch, but the blinding curtain of rain offered no sight of her. Only pitch-black darkness. His expression darkening, he dialed her number. No answer. He tried again. Straight to voicemail. With a growl, he called his personal assistant. The line connected on the first ring. "Yes, Mr. Kingsley." "Find Sophia," Ethan commanded, his voice turning into sharp ice. There was a stunned pause on the other end. "Sir?" "Now," Ethan snapped, cutting the call before his assistant could utter another word. Walking back inside to grab his keys, his gaze inadvertently landed on the abandoned dining table. The melting candles casting long shadows over the cold steak and untouched wine suddenly looked like a grim monument to their three years of marriage. But then, his eyes caught something else–a small, velvet box tucked neatly beside Sophia's plate. His brows furrowed as he picked it up and flipped the lid open. Inside sat a luxury, custom-made watch. It was his anniversary gift. Beneath the watch was a folded piece of paper. Ethan’s chest tightened as he opened it, recognizing Sophia’s neat, gentle handwriting. Ethan, I bought this three months ago because I thought maybe this anniversary would be different. I was foolish enough to hope. I loved you with everything I had, but loving you has broken me. I’m tired now. Goodbye. Ethan’s grip tightened on the paper until his knuckles turned white. A sharp, unfamiliar ache twisted painfully inside his chest. For the first time in his life, the arrogant billionaire felt something terrifying: regret. Suddenly, his phone blared. It was his assistant. Ethan answered instantly, his voice raw. "Well?" "Sir... Mrs. Kingsley’s phone signal just disappeared," the assistant reported, his voice trembling. "The last ping was detected near Riverside Bridge." A horrible, dead silence filled the room. Riverside Bridge. Everyone in the city knew that infamous structure–it overlooked violent, churning rapids, a notorious hotspot for those who wanted to disappear forever. No. No, damn it, she wouldn't. Ethan’s heartbeat turned violently chaotic. "Get the car ready. Now!" Grabbing his coat, Ethan stormed out into the storm. For the first time in his life, absolute, paralyzing fear consumed him. Blinding rain soaked through Sophia’s clothes as she stood at the very edge of Riverside Bridge. Below her, the black river raged wildly, mimicking the storm inside her soul. Her hair clung to her pale, tear-stained face, and her eyes felt entirely empty. Ethan’s brutal, final word replayed in her mind like a broken record. Did you ever love me? No. That single word had completely annihilated the last remnant of her spirit. Sophia closed her eyes, a broken sob escaping her lips as her hand instinctively moved down to rest over her stomach. "I'm sorry..." she whispered into the wind. She had discovered it just that morning. The pregnancy test had been positive. She was carrying Ethan's child. She had planned to tell him tonight over dinner, foolishly hoping that a baby might finally bridge the icy chasm between them. What a pathetic joke. Her child deserved a father who actually wanted them, not a man who resented their very existence. Suddenly, the night air was cut by the screech of tires. Bright headlights pierced through the torrential rain as a black luxury SUV slammed to a halt. Ethan threw the door open, sprinting out. The moment his eyes landed on Sophia standing on the precipice, his heart physically stopped. "SOPHIA!" he roared, his breathing ragged as the rain drenched his tailored suit. He stopped a few feet away, his hands raised in a rare display of vulnerability. "Step away from the edge." Sophia slowly turned her head, a bitter, tragic laugh escaping her. "You care now?" Ethan's jaw clenched, his voice lowering to a desperate command. "Sophia, come here. Right now." "Why are you here, Ethan?" Her tears fell harder, washing away the rain on her cheeks. "You already made yourself perfectly clear. You don't love me." "Get away from the edge, Sophia!" His heart pounded so violently it felt like it would c***k his ribs. "No," she whispered, her lips trembling. "You don't get to control me anymore. You chose another woman over me. For once, let me go." She pressed her hand tighter against her stomach, a sob racking her fragile frame. "I hate you. I hate that I still love you... but you destroyed us." Ethan's sharp eyes tracked her movement, narrowing instantly as he focused on her trembling hand protectively shielding her lower abdomen. A sudden, primal realization slammed into his brain like a bolt of lightning. His expression fractured. He stared at her stomach, then up at her pale face. His voice dropped to a raw, breathless whisper. "Sophia... what are you hiding? Why are you protecting your stomach?" Sophia stiffened, the color completely draining from her face. No. He noticed. Ethan’s eyes widened in absolute shock, the truth shattering his entire worldview in a single second. "You're... you're pregnant?" Dead silence hung in the air, save for the roaring thunder. Sophia's silent tears were his only answer. An explosive mix of possessiveness, terror, and absolute protectiveness erupted within Ethan. She was carrying his child. His baby. His voice turned completely raw, stripped of all corporate armor. "Sophia, please. Come to me. Right now." "No!" Sophia screamed, stepping backward. But her wet shoe lost its grip on the slick metal beam. Her foot slipped. Everything happened in a terrifying blur. Sophia screamed as her body tilted backward over the dark, violent void of the river. "SOPHIA!" Ethan lunged forward with a desperate, primal roar, throwing his body over the edge. At the very last millisecond, his fingers clamped around her wrist. Sophia dangled precariously over death, the violent winds tearing at her clothes. Ethan gripped her with everything he had, his entire arm shaking violently from the strain as he tried to haul her up. "Hold on! Don't let go!" he bellowed through gritted teeth. "Ethan!" she sobbed, her wet skin slipping against his. Their fingers were weakening. Suddenly, another voice shattered the chaotic night, piercing through the thunder. "ETHAN!" Both Ethan and Sophia glanced back toward the bridge deck. Olivia stood there in the downpour, her eyes wide with frantic energy. But she wasn't alone. An older, imposing man stepped out from the shadows behind her. The moment Ethan saw the man's face, the blood in his veins completely turned to ice. It was impossible. It couldn't be. Sophia’s eyes widened in sheer horror from where she hung. The man standing behind Olivia was someone who had been declared dead and buried years ago. And right now, he was staring down at Sophia with cold, calculated, murderous eyes. The man stepped closer to the edge, his voice cutting through the storm with chilling finality. “She must die tonight.”
