The Man Who Returned From The Dead

1194 Words
Sophia was slipping. Blinding rain lashed mercilessly against her face, and below her, the river roared like a hungry beast waiting to swallow her whole. Her fingers trembled violently in Ethan’s grip. She was seconds away from a fatal plunge. Every vein in Ethan’s arm bulged as his muscles strained, holding her weight with one hand while anchoring himself to the slick bridge railing with the other. “Sophia!” he roared over the howling wind. “Hold on to me!” Sophia cried out helplessly, sheer terror flooding her chest as her wet skin slipped against his palm once more. “Ethan…!” His heart slammed painfully against his ribs. No, I will not lose her. Not like this. But before he could haul her up, the chilling voice cut through the thunder again, cold and entirely devoid of human mercy. “She must die tonight.” Ethan froze, slowly turning his head toward the deck. Standing under the heavy, dark rain beside a frantic Olivia was the older man. He was tall, sharp-featured, and carried a terrifyingly familiar aura. It was impossible. Ethan’s pupils contracted in sheer disbelief. The man standing there was Richard Bennett–Sophia’s father. The same man who had supposedly died five years ago in a horrific car explosion. Sophia’s breathing stopped, all the remaining color draining from her face. She stared through the downpour, her voice cracking in utter horror. “Dad…?” Richard’s expression remained flat, showing no warmth, no relief, and no love. There was only terrifying indifference. Sophia’s entire body shook. The father she had deeply mourned, the loss that had shattered her world and ultimately pushed her into Ethan’s path, was standing alive before her. Tears mixed with the rain on her face. “Dad… it’s really you?” Richard looked at her as if she were a piece of trash left on the street. “Yes,” he replied coldly. The single word carried no affection, no remorse. Olivia stepped forward, her red lips curving into a smug, venomous smile. “Well,” she said lazily, crossing her arms, “this family reunion is certainly emotional.” Ethan’s gaze turned entirely murderous, his voice dropping into a register that was deadly. “Olivia. What the hell is this?” “The truth, Ethan,” Olivia smiled wickedly, leaning in. “Did you really think you were the one pulling the strings?” Sophia’s trembling mind couldn’t process the madness unfolding. Her dead father was alive, and Olivia clearly knew him. Sensing the escalating danger, Richard finally glanced back toward the ledge and commanded, “Pull her up.” Ethan didn't wait. With a brutal, adrenaline-fueled surge of strength, he hauled Sophia over the barrier. She collapsed onto the wet concrete, shaking violently from shock. Ethan immediately dropped to his knees, wrapping his strong arms around her and pulling her tightly against his chest, completely uncaring of who saw his sudden desperation. Sophia broke, sobbing uncontrollably against his neck–not from the near-death experience, but from the crushing weight of an unimaginable betrayal. “Why?” she cried out, her broken eyes locking onto the man she used to revere. “Why did you let me believe you were dead?” Richard’s face remained an unreadable mask. “Because your existence became inconvenient. You were never meant to survive this long, Sophia.” Ethan’s entire body went rigid, a dangerous, protective instinct exploding in his dark eyes as he held her tighter. “Watch your words, Bennett,” Ethan growled. Richard simply sighed, dropping a massive bomb. “You really think your marriage to the great Ethan Kingsley happened by chance? I arranged everything. Five years ago, I discovered that the Kingsley empire could only be fully inherited if Ethan married under his grandfather’s strict contractual terms. Old man Kingsley was desperate to secure a match, so I offered my obedient daughter. You were a transaction, Sophia. Raised to be useful.” The words shattered whatever was left of Sophia’s heart. Olivia laughed softly, enjoying every second of her agony. “Oh, poor, naive Sophia. Your own father sold you for money, power, and corporate access.” “No! You’re lying!” Sophia screamed, her voice cracking with pure devastation. But Richard’s sharp voice cut through her denial. “They aren’t lies. I traded you like property to secure my own empire.” As Sophia trembled uncontrollably against Ethan's solid frame, Richard's eyes suddenly drifted down to her midsection, narrowing with calculating malice. “But now, she is carrying a child. This changes things.” Ethan slowly rose to his feet, shifting his large body to completely shield Sophia behind him. His voice became lethal, vibrating with a quiet promise of violence. “You knew?” “I suspected,” Richard murmured calmly. “And it’s a problem. If she gives birth, that child becomes the undisputed legal heir to the entire Kingsley wealth.” Olivia’s smug smile instantly vanished, her face twisting with sudden, ugly fury. “No! That baby cannot be born!” her voice shrieked, her eyes burning with raw hatred as she stared at Sophia’s stomach. Recognizing the threat, Ethan stepped even further in front of his wife, his posture possessive, protective, and predatory. Olivia stared at him, letting out a bitter, frantic laugh. “So this is what it takes? You suddenly care about her because she’s carrying your heir?” The silence that followed was suffocating. Then, Ethan spoke, each word dripping with icy finality. “She is my wife. And she carries my child. If either of you ever come near her again, I will personally destroy everything you hold dear.” Even Olivia looked shaken by the sheer malice in his voice. Richard, however, simply smiled–a cold, calculated, terrifying expression. “You finally care. How amusing. But you should have realized the truth much sooner, Ethan. Because Sophia is not actually my biological daughter.” A heavy, dead silence fell over the bridge. Sophia stopped breathing behind Ethan. What? “Your real parents died twenty-three years ago,” Richard stated, looking at Sophia like a total stranger. “You belong to the Laurent family.” Ethan’s dark eyes widened in absolute shock. The Laurent family? One of the most powerful, mysterious, and insanely wealthy dynasties in Europe. They were untouchable, old-money billionaires whose entire bloodline had supposedly been wiped out decades ago in a tragic m******e. “But one child survived,” Richard smiled cruelly, his eyes locking onto Sophia’s pale face. “You.” Sophia felt the world spinning beneath her feet. Nothing was real. Her childhood, her father, her very identity–everything was a lie. Her knees buckled, but Ethan caught her instantly, his grip ironclad. Suddenly, a loud, mechanical click shattered the stormy air. Everyone froze. Olivia had slowly raised a sleek black handgun, her trembling hands pointing it directly at Sophia. Tears of pure madness streamed down Olivia’s face as her expression fractured. “If I can’t have you, Ethan… no one will.” Olivia shifted her aim lower, targeting Sophia's stomach, and pulled the trigger. BANG.
