Chapter Nine
“So you’re sure the story is true?” Luke said, taking in the “Welcome to Wyoming” sign they passed on the highway. His sister had kept the sheriff’s car with Chloe in their line of sight, and he had Jess on speaker because Karen wanted to hear everything. “Just to be clear,” he said, “my sister Karen, the governor’s wife, is listening in.”
“Hi, Jess,” Karen called out.
He knew his team leader was likely taking a second to figure out what he could say and what he couldn’t.
“So we’re clear and all cards are on the table,” she continued, “I’m the acting lawyer for Chloe right now, so if there’s something you have to share that was obtained in a questionable way, I don’t want to know. Got it?”
