CHAPTER TWENTY NINE "Being an air hostess has been my job,” I say, my voice sharp, shaking despite my effort to steady it. “And now you want to take it away from me?” Hardin doesn’t answer. The car stops. He gets out without looking at me, without a word, like I’m invisible. Like my anger doesn’t exist. Like my life is just a switch he can turn off. I slam the door and follow him into the house. “Why?” I demand, my heels clicking angrily against the marble floor. “Why do you hate my happiness so much?” He keeps walking. My chest tightens. Each step he takes away from me feels like another slap. Another reminder that I don’t matter unless I obey. We finally reach the bedroom. The door shuts behind us, and something in me snaps. I turn on him. “Why the f**k do you keep ignoring me?
