Chapter Twenty-Eight

1201 Words

(Kanyon's POV) The battle had lasted longer than I'd hoped. The rogues eventually retreated, melting back into the forest as suddenly as they'd appeared. We hadn't let them breach the heart of the pack, but not without cost. Too many of my warriors were injured. What bothered me most wasn't the attack itself. It was why they'd attacked. They hadn't tried to overrun the pack. They hadn't stolen supplies. They hadn't even seemed interested in holding ground. "Maybe it was a distraction," I muttered. Jace immediately came to the same conclusion. "Lily—" "She's safe with Eric." I scanned the treeline one last time before turning away. "Let's head back." I mind-linked Eric. "Take Lily back to the pack house. I'll meet you there." His reply came almost immediately. "Understood."
