“I'm going in,” said Vasyl Aksenyn on the phone to his wife Tetyana on February 20 at 7 am. And at midday already, after numerous unanswered phone calls a woman picked up the phone and said: “Your husband is heavily wounded, he's on the operating table at the moment at Hospital #18.“
On February 20, when Berkut men started shooting in Instytutska street, Vasyl ran after them trying to protect the defenseless protesters. A blind bullet caught the hero of the Celestial Hundred despite what he called "superarmour” — a 10 kilogram kevlar vest and an iron helmet.
A piece of hot iron hit Aksenyn in a narrow unprotected slit on his side. The bullet went through his stomach, leaving a wound the size of a fist and a pool of blood.
