CHAPTER 5: The Promise Before The Fall.

845 Words
The contract lay in pieces at the bottom of Vivienne's garment bag, but as she watched Rhys stand at the altar as his sister’s best man, she realized the invisible strings binding them together were completely unbreakable. The Lockhart family estate was awash in blooming floral arrangements, the air heavy with the melody of string quartets and the chatter of high society. Vivienne, stunning in a champagne silk dress, felt hollow inside. Their three-week agreement was ending, and her father’s actions had left her penniless. In a secluded stone archway before the guests took their seats, Rhys intercepted her. He looked devastatingly handsome in his tuxedo, but his eyes quickly noticed her bare left hand. The massive, flashy diamond ring he’d bought for the performance was left in her hotel room. "Why aren’t you wearing it?" Rhys demanded, his voice low but intense. Vivienne met his gaze, her own eyes unwavering. "I’m done pretending," she replied. "I can’t bear the look of professional detachment in your eyes anymore." Rhys’s composure visibly cracked as he stepped closer, the tension between them palpable. But before he could respond, the bridal procession began, pulling them apart. As the ceremony unfolded, Vivienne’s heart raced with the weight of unspoken words. She knew this day would change everything, but the uncertainty of what lay ahead was terrifying. The reception was a whirlwind of laughter and clinking glasses, but Vivienne felt detached, her mind still on the earlier confrontation. The orchestra began a slow, sweeping waltz, and she watched as Rhys walked past several high-profile investors, his focus solely on her. He reached her, extending his hand. "Dance with me," he said, his voice leaving no room for refusal. She took his hand, and as they moved onto the floor, the cameras flashed. But for the first time, neither of them looked at the lenses. Their eyes were locked on each other. Moving together with flawless, instinctual rhythm, Rhys leaned down, his lips brushing her ear. "I don’t care about the contract anymore," he confessed, his voice raw with emotion. "The night you stayed until 3:00 AM to save my life, I realized I’d gladly watch my entire empire burn if it meant keeping you by my side." Vivienne’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. The world around them faded, leaving only the two of them in a moment that felt both infinite and fleeting. Before she could respond, her father’s security detail appeared at the edge of the ballroom, gesturing toward the private library. Arthur Vance had arrived, ready to deliver his final strike. Her mind raced with the implications. She knew she had to face him, but the thought of leaving Rhys, even for a moment, was unbearable. Rhys sensed her hesitation and squeezed her hand. "Go. We’ll face whatever comes next together." With a reluctant nod, Vivienne released his hand and followed the security detail, her heart heavy with uncertainty. Vivienne entered the dim library, the weight of her father’s presence pressing down on her. Arthur Vance stood by the window, a document in hand, his expression a mix of authority and disdain. "Sign this," he demanded, extending the paper toward her. "Claim your relationship with Rhys was a fraudulent stunt, or we’ll file a massive lawsuit against him by morning." Vivienne’s heart sank. The ultimatum was brutal, designed to destroy everything she had fought to protect. Her mind raced, searching for a way out. Before she could respond, the library door burst open. Rhys stormed in, his presence a protective shield. He positioned himself between Vivienne and her father, his eyes fierce with determination. "You can file whatever lawsuit you want," Rhys declared, his voice unwavering. "I’m prepared to spend every dollar I own to protect her." Arthur’s eyes narrowed, but Rhys didn’t flinch. Instead, he turned to Vivienne, dropping to one knee. From his pocket, he pulled a simple, delicate gold band—not the corporate diamond from before, but something real and deeply personal. "Vivienne," he said, his voice softening. "Marry me for real. No contracts, no lawyers, no corporate narratives." Tears filled Vivienne’s eyes, her heart overwhelmed by the sincerity of his proposal. But before she could utter a single word, the library doors blasted open again. A crowd of shouting paparazzi and federal regulators pushed past the security line, flashing badges directly in Rhys's face. "Step away from Mr. Lockhart, ma'am," one of the agents ordered. "He is under arrest for institutional financial manipulation." The room erupted into chaos, the weight of the situation crashing down on them. Vivienne’s world spun, the future she had dared to hope for slipping through her fingers. As Rhys was led away in handcuffs, the reality of Arthur’s betrayal became clear. He hadn’t just come to threaten them; he’d set a trap months ago, tipping off the regulators with falsified documents. Vivienne stood frozen, her mind a whirlwind of fear and determination. The choice before her was daunting: use her freedom to run or become the ultimate weapon to destroy her father’s empire once and for all.
