A Promise Written in Blood
The chamber was silent.
The only sound was Sophia's sobs as she clung to her father's lifeless body.
"Dad..."
"No..."
"Please wake up..."
Ghost stood motionless.
His hands were stained with Victor Laurent's blood.
A bloodstain that could never be washed away.
He had accepted countless contracts.
He had ended countless lives.
But this...
This death was different.
Victor hadn't died because Ghost failed.
He had died protecting the only family he had left.
Ghost knelt beside Sophia.
His voice was quieter than she expected.
"We have to go."
She didn't look at him.
"I'm not leaving him."
"They'll be here in less than a minute."
"I don't care."
Ghost closed his eyes for a brief moment.
He understood.
More than she knew.
"I buried my family once."
Sophia looked up, tears streaming down her face.
"I won't let you bury yours today."
She stared at him.
For the first time...
She didn't see the assassin who had come to kill her father.
She saw a man carrying scars too deep for words.
Ghost gently removed Victor's signet ring and placed it in Sophia's trembling hand.
"He wanted you to live."
"Don't make his sacrifice meaningless."
Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.
With shaking hands, she kissed her father's forehead one last time.
"I love you, Dad."
Then she stood.
Ghost picked up the black flash drive.
He slipped Victor's brass key into his pocket.
Two items.
One held answers.
The other held the truth.
Somewhere beyond these walls...
Both were waiting.
The sound of boots echoed through the tunnel.
"They're close," Ghost said.
Sophia wiped away her tears.
"What now?"
Ghost checked his pistol.
Three bullets.
Victor's handgun.
Eight bullets.
Not enough.
He looked around the chamber.
His eyes settled on a rusted maintenance door hidden behind stacked wooden crates.
"There."
He kicked it open.
A narrow service passage stretched into darkness.
Sophia hesitated.
"How do you know they'll never stop?"
Ghost's expression hardened.
"Because I trained them."
She frowned.
"What?"
"They learned to hunt..."
"...from me."
A deafening explosion shook the chamber.
The tunnel behind them collapsed in a cloud of dust and concrete.
The strike team had blown their way through.
A voice echoed through the smoke.
"Ghost!"
"You can run..."
"But you can't hide forever."
Ghost looked back only once.
His face was unreadable.
"No."
He took Sophia's hand—not gently, but firmly.
"The ones hiding..."
"...are about to be found."
Together, they disappeared into the darkness of the service passage.
Behind them, the flames consumed the chamber.
Ahead of them...
Waited Blackridge.
Cabin Seventeen.
And the truth that would change Adrian Kane's life forever.
The rain had begun before dawn.
It washed away the blood on the mountain road but not the memories they carried.
For six hours, Ghost drove without speaking.
The black SUV they had stolen from the underground garage cut through empty highways, abandoned villages, and winding forest roads.
Sophia sat quietly in the passenger seat.
Victor's signet ring rested tightly in her palm.
She hadn't stopped staring at it since they left the tunnel.
Ghost finally turned off the main road and followed a narrow dirt path hidden beneath towering pine trees.
At the end of the trail stood a weathered wooden cabin surrounded by dense forest.
No lights.
No neighbours.
No roads for miles.
The perfect place to disappear.
Ghost killed the engine.
"We're here."
Sophia looked through the rain-soaked windshield.
"You own this place?"
"No."
"Then whose is it?"
"A man who saved my life."
She looked at him.
"Where is he now?"
Ghost's expression didn't change.
"He died fifteen years ago."
The words hung heavily between them.
Ghost stepped out into the rain and approached the cabin.
He reached beneath the porch railing.
His fingers found a small rusted key exactly where it had always been.
He unlocked the door.
The cabin smelled of old wood and forgotten memories.
Dust covered the furniture.
A fireplace stood in the centre of the room.
Shelves filled with books lined one wall.
Nothing about the place suggested that the world's deadliest assassin had ever been there.
Ghost quietly walked through each room, checking every window, every corner, every possible hiding place.
Only when he was satisfied did he lower his weapon.
"We're alone."
Sophia entered slowly.
For the first time since her father's death...
She allowed herself to breathe.
Ghost closed every curtain.
Locked every door.
Then disappeared into a small storage room.
Minutes later, he returned carrying a metal first-aid box.
He placed it on the table.
"Sit."
She looked at him.
"I'm fine."
"No."
He nodded toward the blood on her sleeve.
"You're not."
Only then did she notice the cut across her arm.
The pain had been drowned by grief.
Ghost cleaned the wound in silence.
His movements were precise.
Gentle.
Nothing like the man who had fought through a tunnel filled with killers only hours earlier.
"You've done this before," she said quietly.
He didn't answer.
"You've treated wounds before."
"I've had plenty."
She looked at the scar running across his forearm.
Then another near his collarbone.
Then another disappearing beneath his shirt.
"How many?"
Ghost wrapped the bandage around her arm.
"I stopped counting."
Silence returned.
Outside...
Thunder rolled across the mountains.
Inside...
Two strangers sat beneath the same roof.
One had lost her father.
The other had lost himself long ago.
Neither knew what tomorrow would bring.
Ghost finally broke the silence.
"They'll search every airport."
"Every seaport."
"Every major highway."
Sophia looked up.
"So what do we do?"
Ghost reached into his pocket and placed Victor's brass key on the table beside the black flash drive.
His eyes settled on both objects.
"We find out why your father died."
"And why they betrayed me."
He looked toward the rain-covered window.
"Because until we know the truth..."
"...we'll never stop running."
Far away, inside a glass tower overlooking the city, a man watched a surveillance screen.
A photograph of Adrian Kane slowly appeared on the monitor.
The man smiled.
"So..."
"You survived."
He picked up a secure phone.
"Activate Phase Two."
"Find the girl."
"As for Ghost..."
His smile widened.
"I want him alive."
The call ended.
The hunt had only just Began
