CHAPTER THREE - THE HUNTER BECOMES THE HUNTED

525 Words
Ghost's finger remained on the trigger. Sophia stood between him and Victor, refusing to move despite the tears gathering in her eyes. "If you want him," she whispered, "you'll have to kill me first." For the first time in fifteen years... Ghost hesitated. Victor slowly raised his hands. "You've always been one of their best operatives." Ghost's cold eyes shifted to him. "I don't have conversations with targets." Victor gave a bitter smile. "No... because they trained you not to." Silence filled the room. "They told you I was the villain." "They told me enough." "They lied." Ghost's jaw tightened. "I've seen the bodies your empire left behind." "And who do you think paid you to clean them up?" Victor asked calmly. Ghost didn't answer. Victor took a cautious step forward. "The people you work for don't erase criminals, Ghost." "They erase witnesses." "They erase politicians." "They erase journalists." "They erase anyone who gets too close to the truth." Ghost's grip tightened around the pistol. "I don't care." "You will." Victor reached slowly into his jacket. Ghost instantly aimed at his forehead. "Hands where I can see them." "I'm not reaching for a weapon." Sophia looked between them nervously. "Please..." Victor pulled out a small black flash drive and placed it carefully on the desk. "Everything is here." Ghost never looked away from him. "The names of your contractors." "The accounts they use." "The politicians they own." "The people who ordered every assassination you've carried out." Ghost's expression remained unreadable. Victor's voice softened. "They never intended to set you free." "They promised me freedom." "They promised you death." The words hit harder than any bullet. Before Ghost could respond— The lights went out. Darkness swallowed the office. Three seconds later... Emergency red lights flickered to life. Ghost's instincts took over immediately. Something was wrong. Very wrong. His earpiece crackled. Static. Then a familiar voice. Cold. Emotionless. "Code Black." Ghost froze. Only one situation ever triggered Code Black. An operative had become... expendable. The voice returned. "Primary target updated." "Ghost." "Status..." "Terminate immediately." Ghost's blood turned to ice. Victor closed his eyes. "They're here." The office windows exploded inward. Glass rained across the floor. Gunfire erupted from every direction. Ghost reacted without thinking. He grabbed Sophia by the waist and pulled her behind the heavy oak desk just as bullets tore through the wall where she had been standing seconds earlier. Victor dropped beside them, breathing heavily. Sophia stared at Ghost in disbelief. "You..." "You saved me." Ghost checked the magazine in his pistol. Seven rounds. Not enough. Outside the office, disciplined footsteps echoed through the corridor. Not security. Professionals. A calm voice came through the hallway. "Adrian Kane." Ghost's eyes widened. No one... No one called him by his real name. "You completed every mission we ever gave you." A pause. "You should have completed one more." The footsteps stopped outside the office door. The voice spoke one final time. "Thank you for your service." The steel handle slowly turned. Ghost looked at Victor. Victor looked back. No more words were needed. They both understood. The contract was over. The war had just begun.
