The Devil's Warning

Chapter Two – The Devil’s Warning I thought maybe I had imagined it. That the champagne, the nerves, the suffocating wealth of the DeLuca mansion had warped my senses. But when the gala ended and the guests poured into their limousines, Damian’s eyes still found me. Always. Every time I glanced over my shoulder, there he was—leaning against the marble pillars, standing beneath the grand staircase, waiting by the bar. Watching. It was not the gaze of a stranger admiring a girl. It was something else. Darker. He didn’t look at me as if he liked me. He looked at me as if he had already decided I belonged to him. By the time Marco finished shaking hands and Mom kissed her new husband’s cheek with that soft, dreamy smile, my hands were trembling. I hurried to the car, praying Damian would lose interest. He didn’t. The moment I slid into the backseat, the door slammed shut beside me. My breath caught. Damian was inside. My mother was still across the drive, laughing with Marco. The driver hadn’t even noticed. But Damian… Damian had slipped in silently, as if the car belonged to him. The leather seat groaned beneath his weight as he leaned closer, his stormy eyes never leaving my face. “You shouldn’t be here,” I whispered, pressing back against the door. He smirked. “Neither should you.” “Get out.” “Why?” His voice was soft, but there was steel beneath it. “Because you’re afraid of me?” I swallowed, my throat dry. “You should be,” he added, his lips curving into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “I don’t share. And now that I’ve laid eyes on you, Isabella… you don’t get to run.” A shiver rolled down my spine. His hand lifted, slow and deliberate, brushing a loose curl from my cheek. His touch was fire—dangerous, consuming. The slam of the driver’s door jolted me back. My mother’s laughter echoed as she climbed into the front, Marco following. Damian’s hand dropped, but his eyes stayed on me, burning with silent promise. “Behave,” he murmured so only I could hear. “Or I’ll make you.” I sat frozen, my pulse racing as the car pulled away from the mansion. Outside, the city blurred into streaks of light. Inside, the darkness of the Devil’s heir wrapped around me, suffocating, irresistible. And I knew then—he wasn’t just a threat. He was a warning.
