Three days ago, Lucy was attacked. My parents were able to convince the healers to allow her to be transferred to our farm, but she came with a message to hand Ava over. None of us wanted to do that, and luckily no one else has been hurt since. Jack was trying to scare us, but I knew he wouldn’t want too much magical blood spilled. Holton hadn’t left Lucy’s side since the attack unless it was to shower or use the washroom, and while he was gone, I would be at her side. Mom said she was good to travel at any time when necessary. I was starting to feel the change in the air now, the powerful magic that anger can create. This afternoon it started raining, which gave off a lot of power.
“Are you all packed dear?” Mom asked as she sat next to me in my room.
“Yeah, we’re ready to leave at a moment's notice. Are you and dad ready to go?”
“We are,” she sighed. “We’ve had a great life here, but it’s time to move on, and we’re ready for our next step.” She smiled. There’s the same anguish in her eyes that I see in dads. They try to hide it, but they can’t anymore. I’m getting stronger, and my instincts are getting clearer.
“What’s happening mom? You and dad keep acting like you have a different plan than the rest of us.”
“I believe everyone has their own path to take Hope, we each need to find it. Your path is taking you to the vampire kingdom, that is all you need to focus on.” She gave me a big hug and kissed my forehead, then left me alone again.
Before I could put too much thought into her words, I saw Ava walk outside into the center of the field. What was she doing? Lightening started dancing around her. I jumped to my feet and ran downstairs, then out the back door. James was there to stop me before I got too close.
“It’s time, Hope, don’t worry. We have a plan.” He told me.
“Is it her lightning?” I knew she could control storms, so I was hopeful she was trying to take control of the situation.
“No, that isn’t her lightning.”
“Why are you letting her do this?! The babies…”
“Are safe, don’t worry.”
“I don’t understand, how can they be safe?” Nothing he said was making sense while I was watching Ava standing in the middle of the lightning strikes.
“Trust us Hope, all three of them will make it out of here alive and well.” I looked up into his eyes and saw the same look everyone else seemed to have. He’s in on the secret, which means Ava is too. She knows what she’s doing.
I watched as she took her hands up to the sky. Her body started shaking, then her own lightning burst out of her fingertips. It rippled along our protection spell until I saw the cracks appearing. Jack was strong enough to send magic through our protection, but not as strong as Ava is, who doesn’t even have magical abilities like us. There’s something more to Ava than any of us realized. She’s not only a chosen one with red eyes, but she’s also so much more. The need to protect her and her children just became more important.
“Calm down Hope.” Mark was in my face trying to talk me down. At some point, I started shaking, and couldn’t control it. She wasn’t going to die, but someone was going to. I could feel it. I wasn’t sure how, but I knew it was going to happen.
“Something’s about to happen,” I whispered out.
Ava turned her head at me after I uttered those words. She smiled and nodded her head. Out of nowhere, Jack showed up in front of her and tried to stab her. He flew back about ten feet then shot back to his feet in an instant. He shot back towards her and kept flying back away. This kept happening for a few minutes, until I saw the magic surrounding her body. Someone was using magic to keep Jack away from Ava.
“You can’t get me Jack.” Ava spoke as he kept running at her and trying different spells against her. “Nothing you do will get your revenge for Kyle.” At the mention of his brother’s name, Jack’s eyes glowed the brightest green I’ve ever seen. I closed my eyes, not wanting to see the impact. I knew how powerful his anger made him, and it wasn’t something I could watch.
I saw it happen in my mind. My parents appeared out of nowhere next to Ava and took the brunt of the attack. They fell to the ground, their bodies smoking, like they were electrocuted. Life was nowhere to be seen in their eyes. It happened so fast, but when I opened my eyes to see the aftermath, Jack was still running towards Ava. How was that possible? My body went limp, and if James weren’t holding onto me still, I’d be on the ground.
They weren’t dead yet, there was still time to save them, but my body wasn’t moving, I couldn’t move. Why wasn’t anyone else moving to protect Ava? Maybe mom and dad weren’t actually there. Maybe they were safe in the house. My mind was playing a trick on me, that was it. I took a deep breath as everything played out in front of me in slow motion. Jack reached Ava with a powerful blow, and then there they were, just like I saw seconds ago. Mom and dad, falling, falling to their death.
I was left to fall myself as James ran towards his wife. Ava didn’t need much help though. I watched as Ava and James took on Jack together. They made a good team, but I couldn’t focus on them too long. My gaze dropped to my parents lying on the grass. Mark was holding me, trying to turn my head away. I sensed him before he reached us outside; Holton was there with Lucy by his side, tears falling down her cheeks. I looked up to see Holton’s gaze land on our dead parents. He yelled so loudly that it shook the ground. It was a roar that would make even an Alpha cower in fear.
There was a fire in his eyes I'd never seen before. He never liked Jack, even when I was dating him, but now, there was only pure hatred. He looked down at me and reached for my hand. By instinct, I took his hand and rose to my feet. We turned our heads towards the battle that had stopped the moment Holton yelled. Ava and James stood between Jack and our parents. They were watching him, while he was watching us. I wasn’t really sure what was happening now, my body moved on its own, all I could see was the man who killed my parents.
Mark
I heard Ava and Anne talking in Thomas’ office. They weren’t being clear about anything they were saying though. It had to do with a vision and a warning, similar to the warning Holly gave Hope, but the vision didn’t make any sense.
“This is our choice, Ava. I know you want to find another way, but there isn’t another way. Our path has been in place for a long time.” Anne said.
“I understand that, Anne, but does it have to happen today? We need more time. Hope and Holton need more time.”
“It does. The twins will be alright, they have their true fated mates now. Your vision will happen today, Ava. I’m so sorry that you have to be a part of this, but it’s the only way.”
“The warning Holly and Avery gave us, there’s still time before that fight.” Ava was starting to beg now, but for what, I have no idea.
“They also mentioned something would happen before the fight took place, and this is it. Everything is as it should be, Ava.” There was silence for a moment before Anne started talking again. “Your mother would be so proud of you. She was always proud; from the moment you opened your eyes until the moment hers closed.”
Was their conversation about this moment in time? The moment Anne and Thomas die while protecting Ava? I couldn’t believe what I was seeing at first. I had no idea what was happening until it was over. Jack was attacking, then Hope was shaking, Jack was running at Ava, Anne and Thomas on the ground, Holton yelling. Everything happened, then it was over. Now I’m watching Hope and Holton walking towards Jack holding hands. Ava and James were slowly backing up towards Anne and Thomas, probably waiting for the right moment to get their bodies out of there. There was nothing I could do; I was frozen in place. I tried to move my legs, my arms, even my fingers, but nothing was moving. I took a deep breath and took in the smell around me. Magic. Hope’s magic. She put a spell on me to protect me. I looked over to see Lucy struggling too. Holton must have done the same to her as well.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a gold light. Hope and Holton were starting to glow. Something was happening with their powers, but I don’t think they knew what was happening. It looked like they were in a trance of some sort. Jack had a smirk on his face to begin with, waiting in a battle stance, waiting for them to come after him. When they started to glow, however, his smirk vanished. Fear took its place. He didn’t know what he was up against until now, didn’t know who they were, or how powerful they were until this very moment. A part of me felt joy to see him scared; to see him shake with the unknown of what would happen to him.
Hope and Holton raised their hands and shot a light towards him. It was almost blinding, I had to turn away from the sight. When I heard him scream, I had to look and see what was happening. It was important to know how strong they were.
“Leave us Jack. You are not welcome here.” They spoke in unison while pushing light from their hands. With one last blast, Jack was pushed off the property and a new protective bubble took place. As soon as the bubble was up, the light was gone and Hope and Holton fell apart to the ground. I was able to move again. I rushed to Hope’s side while Lucy went to Holton.
“My parents,” Hope whispered.
“I’m so sorry.” A tear fell down my cheek as I held her in my arms waiting for her to understand what my words meant. She shook her head and closed her eyes. I watched helplessly as she cried and yelled over and over again. The pain in her voice, the pain in her face, was breaking my heart and there was nothing I could do to help her.
“Ava! Is she hurt? Did something happen to her and the babies?”
“She’s fine.” I turned my head towards Ava and James, who were placing a blanket over Anne and Thomas.
“Ava!” Hope tried to get up, but I held her closer.
“You need to rest Hope, whatever power you and Holton used, took up a lot of energy. I’m taking you back to your room where you can sleep.”
“I need to…”
“You need to rest.” Ava walked over and placed her hand on Hope’s face. “All you need to do right now, is rest and heal before we start our journey to our home. I’ll be up in a few hours to explain everything once your mind is clear.” Ava turned towards me and nodded her head to signal it was time to take her upstairs. James was helping Lucy to take Holton up to his room.
I laid Hope on her bed and crawled in next to her. “Sleep sweetheart, get your strength back and hopefully everything will make sense when you wake up. I’ll be here with you the whole time.” She nodded her head and closed her eyes. I waited until her heart was a steady rhythm before closing my own eyes and wait for sleep to take over.
