The end is the beginning

"Jake I expected you to have packed up by now, where is Kris, the both of you are driving me nuts"Grace shouted hysterically. The words sounded redundant to her, she had said the same words fifty times already, what was so difficult to pack up in time so that they wouldn't miss their flight. She knew that the move was hard on them, it had to be but she was too drained to patronise them. She had just spent the last six months locked in a legal battle with their father over their custody, and to think that she had once loved the man, the thought disgusted her. Now that she had won, she was going to take her children as far away as possible before their father had the chance to appeal for their custody, she was not afraid of him, both her children were over twelve years and they had been eligible to testify in court and both of them had chosen to live with her, she loved them more than life itself and she wouldn't give them up for anything in the world. She clenched her fist tightly as she remembered John's threats after the court granted her sole custody but she was too strong to be fazed by petty threats, John was a powerful man but he was all bark and no bite like her dog penny who she had to give away because of the move. "Mom, we're sorry if we took too much time packing but we're ready now" Kris stated watching her mother closely. Grace was so lost in thought that she didn't even realize that her children had come down the stairs. Kris was 17 years old while Jake was a year younger than she was, they were super close and very well behaved. Grace smiled and hugged her children tightly, no words passed between them it was like the hug made up for whatever words should have been spoken then. " I take it you're all ready, let's get to the airport shall we?" Ben said helping them with their bags. Even though Grace had gotten the mansion and half of John's assets, she would be damned if she spent another day in the house, she took a last look around before she handed her bags to Ben who had been her chauffeur and friend, though John had been of the opinion that people of status did not fraternize with their help, she had been unmoved by his opinion. "Thank you for everything Ben and at least now I deserve a hug don't I," Grace asked when they arrived at the airport and attempted to hug her chauffeur become friend. "Ah yes ma'am" Ben replied and briefly hugged Grace, he knew that Grace was a nice woman but he never took advantage of her niceness, this was, in fact, the first time he had ever hugged Grace and it was because he didn't know if he would ever see her again. Grace was a little younger than his younger sister and he had always admired her strength even though he never understood why she had stayed with John when she clearly deserved a better man, he was however glad that she was getting away from John and he wished her well. " Maybe next time we'll get to the part where you call me Grace instead of ma'am" Grace chuckled, Ben nodded slightly and went around the car to open the boot and retrieve their luggage in his usual professional manner without looking her in the eye. She wondered what he must have gone through working for John before she married him, John was an arrogant and impulsive man, he would have ignored Ben, gotten out of the car and proceeded to the counter without giving Ben a second look, he would only talk to Ben to give him orders or to complain about something irrelevant. Grace wondered why she had endured all his shortcomings but it probably was because she had been in love with him, John had been kind, nice and gentle when he was courting her and even after she had the two children but after it was like something snapped inside him and he became an arrogant and unbearable person or maybe she had begun to see him as who he truly was, especially when it began to hurt her children and that she would never stand for and so the end was inevitable for the both of them. The flight to Massachusetts was long and tiring, John would never look for them in Massachusetts, not that she expected him to look for them but she wanted a fresh start for her and her children, and a fresh start meant a place where John or his power and connections could not intervene in their lives. John always thought Americans to be vulgar people, he hardly visited the continent in general except on business and even at that he never stayed long and preferred to put up at the classiest of classy British hotels and restaurants. She had determined that she would take her children away from that life, they would never lack for anything and they would attend have the best education money could afford but they would not be taught to look down on people or think less of others because they were more privileged than them. . . . .
