It must have been another hour before we got out of the water again to rest. It was the best afternoon I’d had in years. Andrew and Aaron played around a lot more with me than Axel. He was withdrawn but he still stared at me and smiled more than I’d seen this whole past week.
We swam around for a bit after we went back in but when the sun started going down I realized we might have missed dinner. It had felt like no time had passed.
We'd gotten out of the water a few times to sit and rest but it was right back in after that. I looked at the sunset and vaguely wondered what time it was. Andrew came up behind me, making me shiver.
“We should probably get out,” I said. “Gotta get home.”
“It’s a shame,” he said quietly. “This was fun.” But he meant more than that.
