**The Edge*** Kaven laughed, kicking the dagger toward the yacht, where Syndicate agents swarmed. “Sentimental till the end.” He shoved Cassius aside and turned to leave. But Emily wasn’t done. She tackled Kaven, and they crashed into the water. The icy harbor swallowed them; the world muted except for the thrashing of limbs. Kaven drove his knife into her side; she gasped, bubbles streaming, and slammed her forehead into his nose. He went limp. Surfacing, she hauled herself onto the dock, blood mingling with seawater. The Syndicate agents had the dagger, their leader—a gaunt woman in a white suit—holding it aloft. “The gate will open!” the woman crowed. “Ravenwood will rise!” The dagger’s glow erupted, a pillar of light splitting the clouds. The harbor trembled. And in that light, Emily saw it: a fissure in the air, widening, jagged as a wound. Beyond it, shadows writhed, clawing toward the rift. No. Gritting her teeth, Emily staggered to her feet. Jax tossed her a pistol. “Go!” She ran. Syndicate bullets tore the docks apart. She dove, rolled, and lunged for the leader, tackling her off the yacht’s deck. They hit the water, the dagger slipping from the woman’s grip. Emily grabbed it, the blade searing her palm. The fissure pulsed. The shadows loomed closer—monstrous, ravenous. Destroy it, Cassius had said. Emily tread water, the dagger raised. The leader surfaced, screaming, “Don’t you dare—!” She drove the dagger into the fissure. A shockwave erupted. Light. Heat. Silence. Then, darkness.
